Imagine John. John is a middle-class father of two, working to pay off his mortgage, student loans, and the recent medical bills from his wife’s second childbirth. Every Sunday, John and a group of his colleagues go to local sports bars and watch the NFL game while they order food and beers and converse primarily over business and the likelihood of whether or not their favorite teams will prevail. When the friends disagree over a game’s outcome, actions are quickly made as the various men find themselves taking money out of their pockets and throwing it on the pool table, all agreeing that the winner will walk with it all. As John takes the money out of his pocket he is immediately conflicted, debating to himself mentally if he should risk …show more content…
However, as time has progressed sports lovers have become more and more invested and involved in the programs, using the games to make a quick, easy profit. This illegal and often regretted act is referred to as sport gambling. Instead of observing an event and eagerly hoping for your team of choice to triumph, people have come to make predictions and guess in advance what team is more likely to win by taking into account past performances and also the opinions of social media users known as seeking the “wisdom of the crowd” (Krumins 1). Gamblers take these forecasts along with a wager to illegal criminal rings or people known as “bookies” who make money off the transaction and give the gambler their winnings if their prediction proves true. The act of bookmaking adds corruption to the sports industry, taking a once simple and serene leisure activity and turning it into a well for irresponsible individuals to throw their money away into. Although the outcome of the diversion can be in the gamblers favor and produce great fortune, the end result sis often detrimental, and is believed to be a “cancer” to a family friendly, beloved game (Villeneuve

...Roman people and played a significant role in ancient Roman culture. In the amphitheater, gladiators battled against wild beasts or engaged in combat with other gladiators. Such events were used to “elevate status” and to create “interaction between the ruler and the ruled”, highlighting the importance the Romans placed on rank and hierarchy. The ludi represented Rome’s dominance over its enemies but at what cost? It celebrated the fearlessness and power of the warriors and the state but also revealed their viciousness and disregard for the living. The act of killing, the crowd’s behavior, and even the arena itself all demonstrate how the Roman games devalue life, which is what this essay will explore. Human beings have an unusual fascination with violence but the idea of watching people die for sport is still shocking. The practice of watching deaths actually originates from the Christian ‘good death’, wherein friends and family gather to witness a loved one’s departure to a better place. “Death by public execution was an echo, even a mirror, of the Christian ‘good death’” in that it was a public event and was presided over by clergymen. However, the religious and solemn atmosphere cannot be found in a Roman arena. Le Bon suggests that in a crowd “a man descends several rungs in the ladder of civilization. Isolated, he may be a cultivated individual; in a crowd, he is a barbarian – that is, a creature acting by instinct”. Essentially, crowd mentality transforms the sacred ceremony...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

They address dozens of different essay topics. The applicants and their essays have been selected to give you the widest possible range of materials from which to profit. The first four applicants all applied to the University of Chicago. They were chosen by Chicago’s admissions director, Don Martin, according to my desire that they be from four very different people and of average quality for those admitted. In other words, these essays will show you exactly what you are competing against. They are of perfectly acceptable quality, but they should not discourage you. If you follow the lessons of this book you should be able to surpass each of these efforts. The second set of three applicants—Melissa, Doreen, and Carol—is taken from Columbia University’s files. Columbia’s admissions director, Linda Meehan, was asked to supply several applications, again from people of widely differing backgrounds, but this time of superior quality. I think that this group’s applications...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
