...Effortless English What is the most important English skill? What skill must you have to communicate well? Obviously, number 1 is Fluency. What is fluency? Fluency is the ability to speak (and understand) English quickly and easily... WITHOUT translation. Fluency means you can talk easily with native speakers-- they easily understand you, and you easily understand them. In fact, you speak and understand instantly. Fluency is your most important English goal. The research is clear-- there is only ONE way to get fluency. You do not get fluency by reading textbooks. You do not get fluency by going to English schools. You do not get fluency by studying grammar rules. The Key To Excellent Speaking Listening Is The Key To get English fluency, you must have a lot of understandable repetitive listening. That is the ONLY way. To be a FANTASTIC English speaker, you must learn English with your ears, not with your eyes. In other words, you must listen. Your ears are the key to excellent speaking. What kind of listening is best? Well, it must be understandable and must be repetitive. Both of those words are important-- Understandable and Repetitive. If you don't understand, you learn nothing. You will not improve. That's why listening to English TV does not help you. You don't understand most of it. It is too difficult. It is too fast. Its obvious right? If you do not understand, you will not improve. So, the best listening material is EASY. That’s right, you should listen mostly to...

...Listen, to hear and be heard by June Hamid Listening is a natural way to learn a language, and more so for the English Language, where you hear the variety of speakers in their element. Just listen, and you could learn and enjoy all that the English Language can offer and more. The idea is simple enough, and altogether very easy to do. As one of the main functional skills in mastering the English Language, listening is very important. However it is often under used, and even under rated. The other skills, are reading, writing and speaking. Reading of course, goes hand in hand in building a foundation, and was given quite a prominence in my previous article ‘Hey you speak good English’. Listening, as I have often referenced with my audiences, is integral in honing both English proficiency and communication skills, and is crucial to understanding your audience (of one or hundred), who is the ultimate receiver and decipherer of your either very straightforward or convoluted message. In fact, I am very glad that it recently became infamous and was even emphasized up to eleven (11) times in a not too recent storm in a teacup/ debacle involving two very opinionated speakers. Of which, much has already been said about ‘that’ incident, but I tend to think that something very good came out of all this. For one, and for quite a reasonable time, the word ‘listen’ firmly entrenched itself in the mainstream psyche through advertisements using the word to flog everything from restaurant...

...Are you a winner? This training course is called English for Winners, and before you delve into it, we should find out together if it is for you. Do you want to be a winner? Most English learners are unhappy with their English ability. If you ask the average English learner to assess their skills, you're very likely to get one of these answers: "I studied English at school for more than 5 years, but my English is not so good." "I speak a little English, but I think it's just 'school English'." "I understand it a little, but I can't speak it fluently." "My grammar is very bad. I've often tried to learn the grammar rules, but they're too complicated for me." "I had good school grades in English but I still can't speak it very well." These are typical complaints, and they make it clear that very few learners are really happy with the quality of their English. Most of them realize that their efforts are not yielding the results they expect. But instead of changing their strategy and trying to find the right learning methods and techniques, they simply give up. They think that they "just don't have a talent for learning languages". The winners, however, are those English learners who have taken control of their own programs. They know that acquiring English is an ongoing process. It is something that happens every day, day in and day out. They also understand that when it comes to learning English any progress is success. ©EnglishForWinners, Page 1 of 34 Dear Listener, since you...

...Reflection of Independent learning At the beginning, I think my listening skill needs to be improved and my vocabulary is too small too. So I wanted to improve my English listening skill and enlarge my vocabulary through this independent learning activity. What’s more, I also wanted to know some techniques of taking tests, and know differences between British English and American English, and what features does British English or American English has. Last, since I’ve never done a presentation before, so I wanted to grasp some skills and tips to apply on my presentations. In order to achieve those goals, I selected many activities which train the listening skill such as learn English through movies, lyrics training BBC Podcasts, and help to enlarge my vocabulary such as word dynamo, Free rice. I also selected some activities which contain simulated tests and some tips about how to write an outstanding article. Besides, I thought that activities sharing the presentation skills also worth to take, so I put them into my calendar. Then, according to my calendar, I do corresponding activities from the independent learning website. When I practice my listening skill by doing the activities I selected, I tried to listen to each word that had been spoken in the activities, and listen to the same movie or song twice, then take the corresponding tests it has. When I do vocabulary activities, I would look up the dictionary when I encounter an unfamiliar word, and read the word out loud...

There is nothing better than conversation to help you improve. Whereas, you can practise reading, writing, and listening on your own, it’s obviously better to speak English with someone. The best way to do this is to be in an English speaking environment. Take an English course in an English language school, or better still, learn English in an English-speaking country. The quickest way to learn English is to surround yourself with English speakers. Also, get into the habit of thinking in English, don’t translate from your own language into English, it will slow you down. ...pronunciation of English words. Each symbol is treated separately, with explanation and examples that are at the same time a link to a dictionary where you can listen to the word pronounced both in American and British English. Just one technical term used in the article: a closed syllable is a syllable which ends with a consonant (in writing; for example “writ” in “writ-ten” is a closed syllable). [xː] long vowel When the symbol”ː” follows a vowel symbol, it means that the vowel is pronounced longer. [æ] cat, bad, sad, sand, land, hand Among all English vowels, the greatest problem for most learners poses “æ”. It is somewhere between “a” in “father” and “e” in “bed”. It is usually pronounced slightly longer in American English than in British English. It is always represented by the letter “a” in a stressed closed syllable, but not all such occurrences are pronounced as [æ]. [ɑː] bra, calm, palm, father, start, dark This vowel is the closest one to the sound of the letter “a” in many other languages and as such is also denoted [a] in some dictionaries. There is no reliable general rule which would tell you when “a” is pronounced as [ɑː] instead of [æ]. It is quite rare in American English to pronounce “a” as [ɑː]; it is usually pronounced [æ], as in grass, can’t, half, bath etc., all of which are pronounced with [ɑː] in British English. On the other hand, the sound is used in American English in words in which a Brit would say [ɒ] (see below), as in god, pot, top, spot—listen to both...

...When you are learning English as a second language, it is important to learn through the use of good habits. Any student, whether learning to drive or learning a new language, will need to make sure they are learning good habits and not bad ones. Once Bad habits are formed, they are extremely difficult to break, and it will make learning that little bit harder. If you are learning English as a second language through self-teaching methods rather than going to a class, it is important to find the right resources to help you. For example, just reading a translation book will not help you with your pronunciation. You might think that your pronunciation of certain words and phrases is correct, but once you are faced with a native speaker, you may find that you were wrong. Good pronunciation is a good habit you will want to make sure you keep. Why You Should Work On Pronunciation Pronunciation is extremely important when learning English as a second language. It is the pronunciation that allows you to communicate easily with others. More importantly, it allows others to understand you. ...was about 18 hours which was from Budapest to New York. I took the first day to just catch on my sleep. The second day was a bit of a challenge to all of my family because our English was tested by our neighbor. We had no idea what he was trying to say. Took us hours to understand him. He was simply telling us welcome to the neighborhood. We were all limited on our English Skills. Our English Skills were our first challenge that we faced. We had to communicate with people that we didn’t speak their language. We managed to find a family close by that spoke Arabic. They helped us as much as they could with English and Doctor’s appointments and shopping and so on and so forth. It was finally time to start the school year. Remember I had so limited English that I could only say “Hey how are you?” and say “yes and no”. That is almost true for every non English speak. School started and homework was the toughest thing I had faced for the first couple of weeks. I was failing all of my classes. Everything was so new to me and I had to somehow adjust to it. I got to a point where I didn’t want to go to school because I felt like an idiot. I was like a deaf person in a party if you know what I mean. I had no body to talk to in school because nobody spoke my language. I had to get over it and I had to learn English as fast as possible to start communicating with people and to start interact with my teachers and people I wanted to talk to. I went home and started to look up faster ways of...

...com/pronunciation/improving-your-pronunciation/ Improving your English pronunciation Here are some tips to help you improve your English pronunciation. First of all, don't worry about not having a native-English accent. It's important to be able to speak clearly, so that people can understand you. However, it's almost impossible to sound exactly like a native English speaker if you are learning English as an adult in a non-English speaking country. However, there are many things that you can do to improve your pronunciation and your speaking skills. 1. Listen to spoken English as often as possible. Listen to how speakers pronounce various words and phrases and "model" your pronunciation on what you hear. 2. Learn the phonetic alphabet. Use the phonetic alphabet page (at the beginning of most good dictionaries) as a guide to pronouncing new words. 3. Don't forget to learn the word stress of a new word. Every English word has its own stress, or intonation. For example, the word "believe" has two syllables (be and lieve), but only the second syllable is stressed. We say be'lieve and not 'be lieve. Your dictionary will show the syllable stress by an apostrophe (') before the syllable to be stressed. Word stress is important. In fact, it is more likely that someone misunderstands you because of wrong word stress than because of the wrong pronunciation of a sound. 4. Work out which sounds cause you most problems in English. Depending on what your first language is, you may have...

...2 Make a point of studying every day Language learning is rooted in the idea of constant repetition. For example, if you learn 10 expressions and then interrupt your studies, this is what happens: the next day you will have forgotten one of them, the following day two, the day after that 3, and so on. But if you study regularly, everything becomes easier and the "wastag" extremely limited. 3 It is absolutely essential to pronounce the French text out loud Get rid of the idea once and for all that you can learn to speak "in your mind". Repeat out loud. Nobody’s spying on you! When you learn a language you gain the respect and admiration of others. A French person who makes a few mistakes when speaking English is never an object of scorn. Quite the contrary! 4 Listen to French radio stations This is an excellent way to "immerse" yourself in the sound of the language. Don’t try to understand; just let the music of the language do its work. Take the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle. All of us can put in the four corner pieces of the puzzle without any trouble....
