English Communications Function and Power of Language Study The Language of Advertising The advertisements I have chosen to write about in my essay is the Kawasaki Ninja motorbike advertisement and the Burger King’s ad. Both advertisements bring attention to the audience in a similar way as they each have a person with a different facial expression to the viewer. However the main comparison in these two for attention is definitely the actions of the people who are viewed in the ad. In the Burger King it is more static and there is less body movement. The use of a pretty blonde woman with a lipstick and the word ‘blow’, which is the two largest figures in the advertisements, focuses the audience’s attention. The man on the skateboard having the enlarged hand and a frightened facial expression telling the person riding the Kawasaki creates a dramatic effect about the ad. Therefore the Kawasaki print ad is more interactive because it is facing the audience rather than the Burger King which is more passive and directs our attention by using the woman’s mouth to the product their selling. The interest is maintained with both ads after the attention of the audience is successfully caught in distinct ways. Burger King uses sex to sell their product and the word of blow is used which leading to the sexual connotation that is being used. This tells us why the woman is dressed like she is (typical Caucasian with blonde hair and lipstick – stereotypical look of what society considers to be beauty which allows viewers to relate to it) and the way in which the burger is positioned. The company slogan and log is both positioned at the top right hand corner at the edge of lighting (light is also used to trace the audience’s attention/interest in the ad) before the audience looks at the burger. Kawasaki uses the blurriness to give the feeling of speed in the ad and the clarity of the pictures in focus is what is keeping the interest of the viewers. The speedometer on the bike reads zero and shows the clever use of the background blur to emphasise the words ‘STOPS FASTER’ to show that it stops even faster than it speeds up. Both companies use different aspects of the advertisement in clever ways. Burger King uses a word as a pun to appeal to their audience while Kawasaki uses the picture’s clarity to maintain the audience’s interest. Each of the advertisements brings desire to the viewer’s mind in a different way. Kawasaki has a partial image of the front of a motorbike with the speedometer and rear view mirrors which is the view of the rider of the motorcycle. This immediately engages the audience and places them in Kawasaki’s vehicle. The first-person view allows the audience place themselves in the motorcycle and think about how they would look while riding it. The motorbike is also placed in an open spaced lane which is with another person riding a skateboard while cars are shown in the other lane to be in a traffic jam. The vehicles in the open spaced lane are both used as a symbol of ‘being cool’ because of the smaller size which makes it more mobile and the open space shows the freedom you get while riding a motorbike as if no one will be in your way. This appeals the audience’s desire to be cool and have the freedom to do anything they want on the road and safely as well because the new bike ‘stops faster’ besides allowing the rider to travel a fast speed. The Burger King advertisement uses the words of ‘YOUR MIND’ to aim their ad and refer it to their audience. They are creating a burger which will “BLOW” your mind which creates the feeling from eating the burger will have the same mental effect of the other meaning of ‘blow’. It gets the audience to fantasise about how it will taste since they are reminiscing the sexual act ‘blow’ and the burger will give the same pleasure as well to the mind. When the ad has ignited a desire within the audience’s mind they let the audience know where they can act upon this desire to purchase the product advertised. Burger King has contrasting colours on their company logo which is completely different to the background so it stands out telling their target audience to come to their store. Kawasaki approached it in a similar way where the colour is red to contrast against the different colours and is written in hard capital block letters with no text shadow. The sparkle of light on the window of the motorbike catches the attention and acts as a reading guide to lead the attention to the Kawasaki brand which informs to the viewer of the brand name. Overall from what I have learnt about how advertising works through this study is how deliberate everything is placed and used in an ad. This ranges from pictures, colour, clarity of the picture, lighting, size and font of words, type of language used and punctuation to everything you can see in the advertisement. This is why companies are arguing for hours, days over just a minute aspect because advertising can earn a substantial amount of money. It is clearly evident that it is a complicated thought process in order to create an effective ad. From the advertisements I have looked at, companies needed to have created situations or pictures which people can relate to in a clever way in order to accentuate their product advertised like the pun of the word ‘blow’ (sex is definitely commonly used) that Burger King has used. This used I think in order for the thought of ad to be embedded in their thoughts. Advertisements are definitely a psychological assault on the mind designed effectively for consumers to hand over their money. I picked ads which were still persuasively powerful in their own way and stood out against other ads during the process of selecting ads for analysis. Looking back my material I didn’t have any ads which were presented in an absolute serious way to persuade viewers not to pursue something dangerous like speeding. This would probably be the only change that I might consider just to view an ad with a different tone to the reader if I decided to re-pick ads and conduct this study again.

...Poetry, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels are concepts that first came to my mind when I think in the question “What is literature?” The definition of literature has change over time. The only thing that is certain about the meaning of literature is that the definition will change. The concepts about what is literature about also change over time. In order to get a clear understanding of exactly what literature is, first we need to know its definition. According to the Merriam-Webster, literature is defined by “the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age; the body of writings on a particular subject: printed matter.”  Literature has to do with letters, but some people often think that literature is only one thing, not knowing that it is composed by several elements that we use every day. These important elements include poems, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels. Poetry is created from the soul. It comes from your emotions and it needs every piece of creativity inside you. It has been called the art of “saying the unsayable” because trough this you can express your feelings with no limit, and nobody can tell you that is wrong. If you make a poem and you think it is not good enough, well it is no good. You as the author or the reader, can only judge if it is good or but for you but maybe for some one else it is the opposite as it is for you. A good place to start when looking back at how poetry...

...historical periods are reflected in literature. National and tribal sagas, accounts of the origin of the world and of customs, and myths which sometimes carry moral or spiritual messages predominate in the preurban eras. The epics of Homer, dating from the early to middle Iron age, and the great Indian epics of a slightly later period, have more evidence of deliberate literary authorship, surviving like the older myths through oral tradition for long periods before being written down. As a more urban culture developed, academies provided a means of transmission for speculative and philosophical literature in early civilizations, resulting in the prevalence of literature in Ancient China, Ancient India, Persia and Ancient Greece and Rome. Many works of earlier periods, even in narrative form, had a covert moral or didactic purpose, such as the Sanskrit Panchatantra or the Metamorphoses of Ovid. Drama and satire also developed as urban culture provided a larger public audience, and later readership, for literary production. Lyric poetry (as opposed to epic poetry) was often the speciality of courts and aristocratic circles, particularly in East Asia where songs were collected by the Chinese aristocracy as poems, the most notable being the Shijing or Book of Songs. Over a long period, the poetry of popular pre-literate balladry and song interpenetrated and eventually influenced poetry in the literary medium. In ancient China, early literature was primarily focused on philosophy...

Something always take a hold of me on this hill-pleads I should stay.” (Saunders, 1992) The worn path itself is symbolic of the journey of life that has been traveled many times over. ...give for literature is "written books that have value and are timeless". The thing about good literature is that it does not have to be recent. Many works of literature from hundreds of years ago are still interesting and valueable to the modern day reader. Although times have changed, human nature really has not. People still can relate and have the same feelings as the characters in a book from centurys ago. Humans still have man vs self conflict, experience madness, jealousy, joy and sadness and can really appreciate literature that portray emotions that they have experienced. Literature can not be any old book, it has to be good. A book that does not interest the reader or provide any significant value will not stand the test of time. Good literature is drama-filled and will keep the reader on edge guessing what will come next. Also, it is helpful if the literature has a lesson or value. Humans from the 21st century are able to learn from the themes of older literature and relate them to what they have going on in their modern day lives. A meaningless book can be entertaining but will not have the same effect as a book that is able to hook the readers interest but also apply to everyday life. 3. ..."I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" of William Wordsworth The events in the poem “I wandered lonely as a cloud” are very simple but the meaning in the ancient words used in the poem makes it a bit complex. The poet while walking besides a lake alone comes across Daffodils. Daffodils are beautiful flowers, which the poet seems being swayed by the wind as he walks by a field. The experience makes the poet very happy and excited that it does not simply end at the lake. The poet carries the experience with him that every time he recalls the scene of the ‘Daffodils’ in the field it brings him so much happiness. The four stanzas of the poem provide us with the experience of the poet as he explores the beauty of nature. nguage to bring in a joyful atmosphere within the poem. Gazing is a word often used when a person is surprised or amazed at something. However, the poet repeats the word only to show disbelieve in seeing a field full of daffodils. Consequently, the poet uses the words “I gazed and gazed” to show disbelieve. Moreover, the words not only help change the mood of the poem, but also show the beauty of the nature surrounding the poet. The beauty that the poet describes only leaves a reader imagining of its beauty and joy it brings to the poet (Joplin 67). The poem is not just a reflection of the daffodils but the delight they bring once the poet sees them. In the poem, Wordsworth utilizes the natural beauty of the daffodils to bring pleasure. The poet cherishes the...

A self-styled "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," writer Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing the injustices of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Her poetry, and "indeed all of her writing," according to contributor Joan Martin in Black Women Writers (1950-1980): A Critical Evaluation, "rings with passion, sincerity, perception, and depth of feeling." Concerned with modern society's tendency to categorize groups of people, Lorde fought the marginalization of such categories as "lesbian" and "black woman," thereby empowering her readers to react to the prejudice in their own lives. While the widespread critical acclaim bestowed upon Lorde for dealing with lesbian topics made her a target of those opposed to her radical agenda, she continued, undaunted, to express her individuality, refusing to be silenced. ...Written by Roger McGough, “At Lunch Time – A story of Love” is a poem that encourages its addressees to seize the moment and to enjoy life while they can. This ethical value, according to Russian Formalist, is not more important as its aesthetical value of the poem. Unlike the classical approaches to literary criticism that focus both on the aesthetical and ethical dimensions of a literary text, Formalists consider that a literary work is recognized through its form rather than its meaning. Accordingly, the literary devices of a text are indispensible to bring the meaning to the surface and to shed light on the literariness of a text. Following a Formalist stance, this essay will tackle some major artistic devices, which are irony and graphological deviation, and how they defamiliarize a literary text. The striking feature about this poem is the heavily presence of situational irony. This can be seen, for instance, in the speaker’s behavior. He seizes the opportunity of making love to a completely stranger woman in a bus. Ironically, the woman’s refusal of the speaker’s repulsiveness is simply because “it was too early in the morning and too soon after breakfast”. But after that “she joined the exercise”. Situational irony does not only draw readers’ attention to the humorist representation of love making, but also draws his attention to the artfulness of the poem making it unfamiliar from texts such as a newspaper article. This literary device also reflects a message transmitted...
