Review of Henry V Globe Theatre

1. What was your overall impression of the play and the theatre? My overall impression of the play and the theatre was very positive. Although I had previously attended a play at the Globe Theatre a couple years ago, I never received a tour like we did before we saw Henry V. This enabled me to really learn the history of the building as well as exactly why and how the plays are reenacted. I was never aware of the intense preparation and practice that goes into putting on a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theatre. I was also intrigued at the materials the building was made out of and the fact that it resembled the old Globe Theatre as much as possible. I have always had a fascination with acting since I don’t have a creative side. It is so interesting to watch people put on a persona and become a whole different person while performing in a play. I find it so impressive when the plays are from Shakespeare’s time and the actors are able to convert themselves into old-fashioned personalities.

Although I had a very hard time following the play and understanding what was happening at each moment, I still enjoyed being there for the experience. My favorite part about attending this play was the fact that I was able to sit up in a high seating section, which allowed me to view the expressions of the audience throughout the theatre. This made my experience even more enjoyable because the reactions of the audience were so powerful and it completely changed my view of the play. However, I wish I had a better understanding of the actions as they were occurring. I had a very hard time following the deeper meanings behind what the characters were saying. Besides that minor setback, I was thrilled to have the pleasure of experience of watching Henry V in the Globe Theatre. Another aspect that I really enjoyed about the play was that the actors include the audience throughout the whole play, encouraging everyone to participate and become lively.

2. How convincing is the romance between Katherine and Henry in the final act? The romance between Katherine and Henry in the final act was very unconvincing. The actions of both characters made it seem as though they were both very sarcastic when it came to their passion. There was a large amount of sarcastic comments made during this scene regarding the feelings they shared between one another. When Katherine was attempting to learn English to speak to Henry, she seemed like she was not taking it seriously and as though she was mocking the whole situation. Henry also spoke in a sarcastic tone when it came to his romance with Katherine. For example, when the maid would tell Henry to leave, it seemed like he would almost start laughing and not take it seriously. Although I felt as though the romance was not very convincing, I still believe that they did have true feelings for each other.

3. Staging: write some general comments about how the play was staged: what stood out to you in terms of how things happened? I really enjoyed watching how the actors utilized the entire theatre. Not only do they involve all of the audience, but they also use the entire stage when acting. Although I didn’t have the pleasure of standing in the crowd while watching this play, I was still able to watch all the action that took place. My favorite part about being up in the seats was the fact that I could see all the actors when they would perform in the middle of the audience and see how all the people around would react to them. They also moved around the entire stage and went upstairs and well as all over the main stage. The actors utilized the props on stage to add emphasis to the divisional divide in power between the king, and his subjects. In the beginning of the play, when King Henry V was talking to the clergy he would stand at times, while the rest of the actors would sit. This made him appear taller, and more powerful than the rest of the actors, and helped emphasize that he was in power. When the king was presented with a chest full of tennis balls as an insult, he had someone else open the chest. This act showed that he was above the mere act of opening a gift from anyone.

4. Who was your favourite character and why? My favorite character was Catherine because the story of her marriage to Henry made the play somewhat happy in the midst of a war. Also, I think her eventual marriage at the end of the play was a plot twist in a way because of France and England’s conflict during the whole play. I also enjoyed her character because of her sarcastic humor, which provided comic relief during the play as well as how she represented the dynamic between France and England. It was very fascinating to me that such an intense conflict between two countries could be resolved around the actions of one person. The fact that Catherine spoke barely any English and spoke in French during the play made it difficult to understand her; however, her actions and personality made her character very likable because she helped add humor to the play.

London Riots

...London Riots The London Riots occurred in 2011. It first started on Saturday August 6 and ended on Thursday August 11. Thousands of people rioted in several London boroughs and in cities and towns all over England. The riots are sometimes referred to as the "BlackBerry riots" because of the use of mobile phones and social medias to organize them. The riot first began in Tottenham, North London after the death of Mark Duggan. 29-year-old Mark Duggan was shot by the police in Tottenham on August 4, 2011. He was shot in the chest because the police had suspicion that he had a weapon and was planning an attack. This event wouldn't have turned to much if Mark was not dark skinned. No one would have given it a second thought, but he was. There was always tension between black people and the police since 1985 the Broadwater Farm riot. Since 1985 there was progress in the relationship but the shooting raised the tension once again. According to David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, Duggan's death was part of "a history in Tottenham that involves deaths in the police custody". Claudia Webbe the chairperson of Operation Trident, asserted that many black people saw Dugan's shooting as "yet another unjust death in custody" and that young people in Tottenham are "still six, seven eight times more likely to be stopped and searched than their white counterparts". One of the reasons I think the riots occurred and turned to more than just a protest was because of what Claudia Webbe said. Black...

Big Red London

...of the influence that a city like London exercises across the globe, it’s natural to think of that influence being exercised abroad. But that is too simple. While people around the world do engage with London remotely – they learn about it at school, read about it in books and papers, see it on TV, or meet visiting and immigrant Londoners – their most intense engagement with it will be as visitors to the city, whether as students, migrant workers or tourists. Millions of people visit London every year for business, leisure or study, creating a web of human connection which helps the UK maintain a prominent position in the collective global consciousness. So what is it that makes London so attractive to potential visitors? And what can we do to ensure tourism continues to bolster our soft power? Tourism in London is booming. There were a record 16.8 million visitors from at least 60 overseas markets in 2013, 1 making London one of the most visited cities in the world. Last year tourism added over £9 billion to the London economy and is responsible for 200,000 jobs across the capital. 2 Motivations to visit vary from market to market, but the city’s cultural offer is a consistent draw; the British Museum alone recorded over 4 million visits from international tourists in 2013. 3 The Royal Family and Buckingham Palace have a strong appeal, especially to American visitors. Shopping, parks and nightlife all contribute to a perception of London as a vibrant and appealing place to...

London Riots Speech

...London riots Manuscript Hello! My name is (...). I am very pleased to be here tonight, to talk to all of you. I am going to talk about the riots that are still going on just outside of these doors from my point of view, and hopefully help solving some of challenges that the nation is right now facing. After three days of fire, violence and looting in England, countless analyses are trickling in the media, each with their take on the cause of this sudden riot. Everyone wants to know how peaceful demonstrations in North London, unexpectedly turned into riots, that just as unexpectedly, has spread like wildfire over London and the UK and has created global debate. And I am pretty sure we are all left with the same question, because; what makes people set fire to small, family-run businesses, and why would someone beat up a random by-passer or rob somebody who has already been beaten up? But what creates the greatest schism in the analytical reverberates among experts, politicians and basically everyone with a twitter profile, are the lootings. Why do all these young people from poor areas, wade into smashed shops, take the goods and then just leave with a grin on their face, absolutely careless of whose watching? With the conservatism dominating this country, many people will think that a bunch of thugs who thoughtlessly commit criminal acts, do not deserve an explanation for their unacceptable behaviour, and supporters of the liberalistic mind will shake their...

London Burning

...London Burning By Mark Arve, 7th August. An innocent lost life during a drug-raid has brought demonstrators blood boil. Revenge is on the agenda and London is paying the price. 4th August 2011, Tottenham Hale. The death of 29-year-old Mark Duggan during a drug-raid has pulled the trigger and should apparently be the cause of the riots in London theses days. The police stopped a taxi carrying Mark Duggan as a passenger on Thursday the 4th August in the evening around 18 AM. The police were trying to arrest Mark Duggan, but the arrest lead to hand-to-hand fighting, while Mark Duggan tried to resist the overpowering police officers. The officers were compelled to shoot Mark Duggan because of his threating and violent behaviour and in preparation to their own safety. The police officers fired two shoots against Mark Duggan. One of them fatally stroked his chest and killed the family man, who was father to four children. Ambulance services tried to save his life, but his life could not be rescued – he died only half an hour later. Conflict of evidence A spokesman, representing the police maintains that the police officers shot Mark Duggan in self-defence. The spokesman claims likewise that Mark Duggan first discharged shots against the police officers, before he got shot. Family and friends, who knew the 29-years-old Londoner very well are not in doubt about the cause to the death and whose fault it was. According to them, Mark Duggan was...

Jack London

...Catherine Murray Research Paper Jack London Jack London was a great American writer, author, and journalist in the nineteenth century. He was born John Griffith Chaney, in San Francisco, California. London worked in the Klondike for a few years and then began to write and publish books and stories. His books became very successful which made him one of the most popular authors of the nineteenth century. Jack grew up in a hard working-class. He pretty much paved out the way for his own life and success. He rode trains, worked on oyster ships, shoveled coal, and found employment in a cannery. These experiments inspired him in writing some of his stories, as he really enjoyed to read and write at libraries in his free time. His writing career basically began in 1893, the year that he went out on a sealing voyage in which him and his crew almost got taken out by a typhoon. Jack London’s writing career started off by his mother encouraging him to submit one of his stories to one of the local newspapers for a writing contest. Jack was 17 at the time and even though he only had an eighth grade education, he had won the first prize of twenty-five dollars, and had beat college students from Stanford and Berkley. After this experience, he decided that he would begin to dedicate his life to writing short stories, but he had a difficult time finding publishers. He then enrolled at the University of California Berkeley, but only for a brief time before he traveled north to Canada...

London and Dubai

...London and Dubai London and Dubai are somehow different, specifically speaking about the culture in both cities. As a result of London’s ancienity and Dubai’s modernity, architecture differs completely in both of them. Yet both cities are globally known for their tourism and multicultural societies, and must visit touristic destinations. Starting with London’s way of living, it is extraordinary when it comes to entertainment, crowds, events, and festivals. Yet London is not a great destination for those who seek for quiet places, and of course it is definitely not environmentally friendly. London’s air is polluted with toxins, and it has never been a great place to breathe a clean air. Speaking of living in this incredible city is something I find uncomfortable for several reasons. Rather than that, London is expensive when it comes to daily life needs. Tax is included in everything, from transportation, food, to clothing. When it comes to Dubai’s way of living, it is not really different. Dubai is a city that is well known for its developed infrastructure, and modernity, which makes it a twenty-first century modern city, although it is similar to London, yet it has its own environment, especially talking about the hot weather, and how it affects everybody’s daily life routine. Anyway London and Dubai are similar in the way of living, although Dubai is a tax free city while London is not. However London is more of a convenient city comparing it to Dubai, particularly speaking...

Jack London

...Jack London The life experiences of John Griffith, or more commonly known as Jack London, are portrayed throughout his many stories. His stories reflect the strengths and weaknesses of the living creature (be it more or beast). Jack London began his adventures at a very early age. Born out of wedlock and into a poverty-ridden family he learned to find ways of escaping the dull routine of work. At the age of ten London was selling newspapers to supplement the family income. He labored in canneries, mills, doing laundry and shoveling coal so that he could support his family. Between the laborious chores of earning a living London also had numerous adventures when he tried the other side of the law. The adventures started when he buys himself a small skiff and teaches himself to sail but the pressures of home life take that away from he and he is forced to work at a cannery starting at the tender age of 14. Even at that age Jack London still had continuous thoughts of writing for a living. At the age of 15 London is tired of the low wages and the back breaking work of the factory and decides to take matters into his own hands. He sails out to become an Oyster pirate with the ship “The Razzle Dazzle” that he purchases with money borrowed from Virginia Prentiss. London - a Multilingual Melting Pot

...With millions of people, London truly is a beacon for multicultural capital of Europe if not the world. With over 300 languages and dozens of different cultures intermingling every-day, it makes perfect sense why so many massive multinational corporations have headquarters in London. Within the 32 boroughs that make up Greater London, the proud capital of United Kingdom, there are over 300 different languages spoken daily. This makes London a truly cosmopolitan city, probably more so than New York. New York too has diverse demographics of languages spoken but considering the presence of United Nations there, perhaps it makes more sense. But London being so close to mainland Europe, has almost become a destination of choice for bilingual professionals. The business world recognises this and has reacted adequately. A good example of this would be the fact that Air-France consolidated all of the European call centres and moved them to Wembley in North London hence creating over 200 jobs. There are plenty of other similar examples and London now hosts more multilingual contact centres than anywhere else in the world and across the board, in many industry sectors the need for bilingual professionals has seen a steady growth. Probably New York is the only city that comes close to London in terms of Internationalism. Prof. John Wells of UCL says besides the obvious business sense this helps to eliminate the narrow-mindedness of British people in learning languages. He also adds...
