Revenge is the most imminent theme, the aspect that leads the main characters in the book to their dismal fates. Heathcliff’s need to propagate agony in those who offend him always results in utmost revenge. He wanted to hurt Edgar because of his marriage to Catherine, and he wanted to get revenge on Catherine by marrying Isabella to make her jealous. Since Hindley never lost an opportunity to degrade Heathcliff, the "gypsy" grew up determined to terminate Hindley and take control of the two houses. The fact that Hindley already has a tendency to drink and gamble made Heathcliff's vengeance all the easier. Heathcliff was still motivated by his need for revenge and tried to get young Cathy away from Edgar by having her marry his son, Linton. Without this desire, Heathcliff would have had nothing to do but pine after Catherine, so it became a major motivator for his character. Just as Heathcliff had a yearning to cause others pain, Hindley’s same longing to hurt Heathcliff caused him to go bankrupt and eventually die. His attempt to kill Heathcliff only hurt himself in the process. The fact that Heathcliff was favored over him as a child reflected the built up anger and resentment inside him and towards others. The hurt that Hindley felt is clearly understood, but sympathy for him is only temporary because it is still his own fault for his predicaments. Romanticism is a major element in Wuthering Heights and is what connects this book with revenge. Rebels during the romantic period loathed industrialism and the Enlightenment period. They sought ways to inflict pain on the people linked to those concepts as shown throughout the book. Emily Bronte was trying to show us how the rebels felt about those events and how they responded with revenge to expose their feelings. As shown in the book, it does not always go as planned and result in a worse or greater outcome. Without revenge, the romantics and the characters wouldn’t have as much motivation and their story would be a less thrilling occurrence to remember.
