...enchanted that they died. Odysseus ties himself to the boat just so he could give in to the temptation of the song and not die. Just like him, Inman too was giving into temptation. Although it wasn't a song that lured him in, but the forceful sexual temptation from Lila. He tried not to give in to her, the more he resisted the harder she forced herself onto him. If he had given in fully to her temptation just like the soldiers with the sirens, he would have died. Another similar scene between both Odysseus and Inman would be the scene where Inman and his friend were drugged and almost turned in for a reward. A man and his wife had drugged Inman and tried to seduce him so that they could make a living like they always do. This is similar to the Lotus eaters Scene. Odysseus and his men arrive at the most beautiful island they have seen on their trip, and they stop by to check it out. Soon they meet women who live there, are taken to their place and are given food and drinks. Like Inman they were all drugged and confused tot he point where they did not want to leave, even if they were able...

...Jacob Smith October 14th, 2013 English 111.140 Pigs in Jerseys? The two essays “The Roar of the Crowd” by David P. Barash and “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou are vastly different in their opinion of the importance of sports, and the how that it effects the world around us. These essays depict the emotional power that sports have on people. While reading the essay “The Roar of the Crowd” you cannot help but picture an avid sports fan throwing down the essay with bitter disgust, because the arguments that it presents. Comparing sports fans that “root, root, root” for their favorite team to that of the activity of “pigs in the mud”. Even if you are an extreme sports lover and paint your face and pay top dollar just to be a few more inches closer from your favorite team of player, you cannot help but to read this article and understand where Barash is getting these opinions. Such as when Barash points out that we get a sense of identity when we throw on the home team’s jersey and join the sports frenzy. He also disuses the way that children are exceptionally prone to the delusion of latching on to idol like that of a star athlete and pouring there entire life into a person that can hit or throw a ball freakishly good rather than that of a brilliant mind like Einstein(Barash 363). Barash’s Main argument is that we have completely engulfed ourselves into these sports, played between a bunch of “spoiled millionaire players” (Barash 362). While forgetting things that...

...Reporters: VIANCA PAMELA DELOS REYES JESTER CRUZ CHAPTER 12: FLOWERING PLANTS In this chapter, you will study the structure of flowering plants, how they function, and how they respond to the environment. 1. FLOWERS, SEEDS, and FRUITS -Some flowers are large and showy. Some are small. Even though flowers look different, they have the SAME FUNCTIONS. Flowers are the structures of sexual reproduction in angiosperms. RECEPTACLE-enlarged end of the stem under the flower. SEPALS-Circle of green leaf-like parts found around the bottom of the flower. They cover and protect the developing bud. PETALS-is found inside the sepals. These are usually the bright colored parts you see in flowers. Petals surround the reproductive parts of the flower. STAMENS-slender structures with knobs on top are near the middle of the flower. The slender parts are the FILAMENTS and the knobs are the ANTHERS. The tall, vase like part in the middle of the flower are called the PISTIL. Notice the sticky stigma is supported by the STYLE. At the base of the pistil is the OVARY. Inside the ovary are one or more ovules. An egg is produced inside each ovule. PERFECT FLOWERS-have both stamens and a pistil. IMPERFECT FLOWERS-have either stamens or a pistil, but not both. HOW SEEDS AND FRUITS DEVELOP For seeds to form in Angiosperms, a pollen grain should be transferred from an Anther to a Stigma. Stigma helps trap the pollen. Recall chapter 11. When a seed begins...

...2. Spreadsheet Errors: What we think we can do What we know? 1. What are the leading causes of Spreadsheet errors? The leading causes of spreadsheet errors are a) Human incapability of doing complex cognitive tasks with accuracy, this is a limitation in human capability and this contributes partly to the errors that are caused in spreadsheets b) Lack of disciplined development practices is one of the most common reasons why spreadsheet contains errors. Many organization has policies in general about end user development in general, much less spreadsheet development c) Many developers build the models and hardwire it to one end result they are working without considering the constraints or different possible scenarios. This ultimately leads to the fact that the model doesn’t work for any other input variables other than the one that is being used to. d) Another common reason of spreadsheet errors is due to the overconfidence of the developers in the accuracy of the spreadsheets. They don’t spend time to test the spreadsheet for any possible errors e) We could also say innocence (in a sense of not knowing the excel capabilities) as one of the common reasons why spreadsheets has errors, people tend to learn from friends and coworkers without any proper training on Excel and its capabilities which ultimately lead in unstructured spreadsheet development 2. Why these errors are typically not detected? a) Primary...

...I choose to write about the meaning that I got from reading Maya Angelou's peom "And Still I Rise" and then watching her read it. Maya Angelou was born April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. Maya Angelou was raised in St. louis, MO and also Stamps Arkansas where she had to exsperience racial discrimination that was common during this time. Maya Angelou is one of the most influential voices of our times. She is a global renaissance woman. When I read Maya Angelou's poem it touched me in a very deep way. As I read the poem the meaning that I got from it was that she was speaking of a woman that had to exspreience hard time and was maybe put through some difficult situations. However through it all she did not let it hold her back or cause her to be a negative and bitter person. Maya Angelou's words are very inspirational. I also watched Maya Angelou read the poeam "And I Still Rise". Listening to her read it really changed it a lot it seemed as if the poem was much more deep and meaningful. The words and still I rise was much more powerful when I listened to her read the poem. I believe that people enjoyed reading and listening to Maya Angelou because she spoke so deeply and knowledable. She was a very smart woman who's poems reached all audiences. Her poems are very clear in words which meant they are easyly understood. ...for crop production. After which small hills were constructed known as mounds by using farm equipments such as the fork and hoe, to which the tomato seedlings were transplanted to. Thirty mounds constructed, placing at least to each mound. Some NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) was applied near to the roots of the plant after they were transplanted. The farm equipments were then washed off with soap and water to prevent rust of the equipment and were allowed to dry and were then placed back into the farm house. The seedlings were watered daily. Majority of the time the soil was moist to which the plants were situated. The tomato plants were growing healthy and strong. After a few days of transplanting the tomato seedlings and the plants were growing tall, the plants were staked. The plants were staked by cutting piece of wood and placing it near to the roots of the plant and rapping the tomato plant around the wood and also tying the plant to the wood with a piece of string. Six weeks after the plants were transplanted they were fertilized again with NPK fertilizer. By this the tomato plants had started to produce yellow blossom flowers. Weeds grew around the roots of the plant majority of the time, competing...

...AS Language Assessment “In search of the perfect sausage” In the extract “in search of the perfect sausage” the contextual factors that may affect the language used are; the mode, the tenor, the field and the function. This extract is written to inform and entertain but in non-standard English. For example “stickyish” and “marmitey”. These show that the writer wants to write her account of her search in way that will relate to his readers also it shows that the text is informal as oppose to being formal. The mode of this text is written. The field of the text is to describe to someone what kind of sausage they see as their “perfect sausage” and they go into great detail about every little thing that needs to be considered when in search of the perfect sausage. There are a few interesting uses of morphology in this text. An example would be “coarsely”, this word is a free morpheme “coarse” attached to a bound morpheme “ly” to create the word “coarsely”. There are more than a few free morphemes within the text and no bound morphemes because a bound morpheme has to be attached to a free morpheme in order to make sense. I’m not sure whether this would be a correct morpheme or even if it is a correct use of a lexis but the word “stickyish” would be a free and bound morpheme attached; “sticky” and “ish”. The word stickyish means not really sticky but sticky enough and it is used in this field to describe a sausage. This text isn’t written in past tense but I wouldn’t...

Root systems majority of plants are located beneaththe surface the functions of the root systems is to absorb water and mineralsfrom the soil it is used to feed off the entire plant. The root system is madeup of the branch root, root hairs and the primary root. The two mainpurposes of roots are to stabilize the plant in the soil, while at the sametime absorbing water and nutrients and dispersing them to the rest of theplant. Plants can also act as storage sites for food reserves. Water does notcome to roots nearly as much as roots must come to water. Roots constantly haveto grow to adapt to new water supplies. This constant need for water helps withthe process of photosynthesis. Each plant has its own root system. Plants havethree types of root systems,Taproot with a main taproot that is larger andgrows faster than the branch roots the Fibrous, with all roots about the andthe Adventitous, roots that form on any plant part...

...INSTRUCTIONAL SHEET FOR STUDENTS PROPAGATION BY AIR-LAYERING OBJECTIVES Students should be able to: ❖ Demonstrated the steps involved in Air-layering propagation. ❖ Explain the reason for using rooting hormone and scraping of cambium layer on stem. NOTES PROPAGATION BY AIR LAYERING Air layering or marcotting is a form of asexual plant propagation. This is a form of propagation that involves the use of plant parts, other than seeds to produce new plants. The process of Air-layering involves a system whereby new plants are formed on a stem while still being attached to the parent plant. SAFETY WARNING 1. Care should be taken when using the budding knife so as not to cause injury to oneself or others. 2. Gloves should be worn at all times to insure that rooting hormone does not come into contact with skin. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1. Plants to layer 2. Rooting hormone 3. Secateurs 4. Sharp sterilized budding knife 5. Damp cocoa moss 6. Clear plastic wrap 7. String 8. Brush 9. Latex gloves. STEP INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF AIR-LAYERING 1. Select a branch from a healthy plant. Stems of pencil size thickness or larger are best and remove any leaves that are present. 2. The chosen stem is girdled i.e. using a sharp budding knife two circular cuts are made on the stem at 3c.m. apart. 3. A third cut...

...Colonisation of a wasteland is the plant succession which occurs in an urban area which has been abandoned or untouched for 5 years. This form of colonisation is a form a secondary succession. Plant succession is the process in which one plant species replaces another over time which may be influenced by changes in the environment. The first plants to develop are the pioneer plants. They are able to exist in areas where there is little water, obtaining nutrients by photosynthesis and grow in places with very little soil, like concrete. Some examples of pioneer plants are lichens and mosses. When these plants die they provide a mat of organic matter which, mixed with the weather mineral matter produces a protosoil that other plants can root into. Stage two of the colonisation of the wasteland is when the Oxford ragwort starts to grow. It grows in the cracks in the surface because they provide sheltered places where seeds can germinate and retain moisture. During this stage, plant succession is rapid. As these higher plants die off, they produce a thicker and more nutrient-rich soil. Taller plants can then become established. One of the most common is rosebay willow herb, which spreads initially by seeds and then by rhizomes which can extend up to 1m a year. A rhizome is an elongated horizontal underground plant stem producing shoots above and below the ground. These plants gradually shade out the lower plants stopping them from growing as they can’t photosynthesise. The...
