Project Management and Success in Academic Research

...PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND SUCCESS IN ACADEMIC RESEARCH Lori Criss Powers   Dr. Gillian Kerr May 21, 2009 Abstract: Conventional project management approaches do not seem to work well in academic research. In our experience, problems include resistance to basic project management processes like milestone development, extended delays caused by researchers not responding to emails or phone calls, a consistent lack of clarity regarding project outcomes, and the inability of the project manager to affect the behavior of research team members. This paper summarizes key challenges of project management for university‐based research: the problem of defining success; uncertainty and lack of clarity; and lack of accountability structures. We suggest a simple framework based on three essential elements of project management to identify and manage core risks at the outset of academic research projects. The three elements comprise: (1) A credible and recognizable definition of the desired state; (2) A credible and compelling measure of deviation from the desired state; and (3) A way to bring the project back on track. Key Words: Managing projects, uncertainty, university‐based research, management INTRODUCTION Broadly speaking, academic research projects refer to any undertaking intended to extend knowledge through a disciplined inquiry or systematic investigation (Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics, 2008), that is at least partly carried out in an institution of higher learning...

Project Management Research

...How To Increase Listening Skills On Your Team Listening is probably the most important skill that everyone needs to learn and practice. It is both the key to success and the main reason why teams fail to perform. Miscommunication causes hurt feelings, poor performance, and disunity. When people on your team listen to one another you decrease frustration and conflict and increase the overall respect and trust level between team members. Here are three ways to increase your ability to listen: Clarify content -Two powerful phrases that everyone needs to learn, "Did I hear you say...?" and "So you're saying..." There's no harm in being wrong. By simply repeating what you think you heard, you are letting the other person know that you are engaged and making a concerted effort to listen, and not just hear them speak to you. There's a big difference between listening and hearing. Mirror the speaker - You can practice this one while driving. Put talk radio on and as the on-air person is speaking repeat everything he or she says within a second after the word is said. This is hard but valuable work to increase your ability to focus on the one who is speaking. Don't do it when you're with one of your team mates! Otherwise, you're liable to get hit. After a while practicing in your car, however, you will be able to mirror the speaker's words silently in your head. When you can listen closely to every word spoken, you'll understand everything people are telling you. Stop...

...TL 038 INNOVATION PROJECT MANAGEMENT: A RESEARCH AGENDA SERGEY FILIPPOV; HERMAN MOOI DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, DEPARTMENT OF INNOVATION SYSTEMS RESEARCHER AT DELFT CENTRE FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT (THE NETHERLANDS) Abstract th Originally developed in the mid-20 century, project management has become a distinctive way to manage business activities nowadays. Another important development is virtually universal recognition of the role of innovation and technology in the corporate change, growth and profitability. It is unsurprising that development of innovation is often run as a project. Yet, theoretically both project management and innovation studies have evolved over time as distinctively separate disciplines. In this paper we make an attempt to conceptualise the innovation project management and to specify the idiosyncratic nature of innovation projects as opposed to conventional projects. By doing so, we contribute to the nascent academic debate on the interplay between innovation and project management. Key words: project management, innovation, technology 1. Introduction This paper is concerned with three topics and the interplay between them, namely “Innovation”, “Research and Development (R&D)” and “Project Management”. The interest in these topics has exploded recently as they emerged both on the policy agenda and in the corporate strategies. The contribution of technological innovation to national economic growth has been well established in...

Risk Management

...A PROCESS APPROACH TO PROJECT RISK MANAGEMENT Adam Greene; research student, Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University ABSTRACT This paper is based on research into project managers’ influence upon the project and team structure, and their ability to manage risks. The individual risk philosophies of the team members are considered in light of the effect they may have upon risk management. This paper briefly reviews project management, risk and risk perception and their interrelated effects upon the construction process. It is suggested that just as risk philosophies of individuals affect the decisions made in their lives away form their professional careers, so their perceptions and experiences of risk can affect their professional decisions. The approaches utilised for the research to explore this theory are also discussed within this paper. Keywords: Process; Project Management; Risk Perception; Risk Philosophy INTRODUCTION This research is being undertaken as part of the Process Protocol II project (Cooper et al, 1998), for which the author is responsible for the mapping of the project and risk management activity zones. There are three related topics covered within this paper: risk propensity, defined as a person’s desire to either avoid or to take risks; risk preference, the perceived level of risk and uncertainty a person is willing to accept in a given situation; and risk perception, the subjective view of the perceived risk...

Box 8888 Downtown Station, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3C 3P8 Received 27 July 2011; received in revised form 29 November 2011; accepted 26 January 2012 Abstract Project portfolio management offices (PPMOs) are a subset of project management offices (PMOs) that handle collections of multiple single projects and programmes, i.e. portfolios. PPMOs are centralised organisational units that cater to the demands of various stakeholders by performing specialised tasks. They are initiated by their organisation's leadership in response to increasing management challenges originating from project portfolios. Although there has been considerable research on PMOs in general, not only a clear understanding of multi-project PMOs' activity patterns set in specific contexts like project portfolio management, but also both existence and mode of multi-project PMOs' contribution to successful performance are still lacking. By quantitatively analysing PPMOs in 278 portfolios...
