“One –CLICK- two- CLICK- three- CLICK- four- CLICK- five- CLICK- six- CLICK- seven- CLICK- eight- CLICK- band halt!” This chorus rang loud and proud in my mind, each metronomic click piercing my brain. Every joint in my body screamed, pleaded, yearning for a break. The straight-legged marching technique strained my muscles, strained my joints, strained my relationship with my flute. I limped to the car at the end of the day. My second year of marching band was no easier than the first; in fact, by the next morning, I could no longer walk. Many months and several specialists later, my marching band career was over. Fast forward a year. At my school, our band program is marching-only and since I was unable to march I had to drop band from my school schedule. This absolutely shattered my heart because I love concert music, always have. I dedicated so much time and effort to it, working to earn first chair flautist in our region band in 2016. I had aspirations of majoring in music in college and did not want to have to give it up, but the circumstances just did not permit me to participate in my high school band program any longer.
On the bright side, band had always taken up two class periods every year and now I found myself free to explore a variety of different classes. This freedom opened doors I didn’t even know existed! Literary …show more content…
We read countless student poetry and prose, sorted through gorgeous artwork and photography, and even received a song lyric submission. I helped organize the Poetry Slam, design advertisements, and even did a little bit of layout and design when it came time to put the magazine together. ...When I was an 8th grader, I was blessed to be apart of the high school marching band. I remember back then, band camp used to be all day and we’d stay and eat lunch at the school instead of leaving and coming back. After lunch, Mr. Fisher would play videos of these professional marching bands. They were part of an organization called Drum Corps International. It’s like the NFL for marching band kids. The first show we watched was “Spartacus,” performed by Phantom Regiment. At the end of the show, the drum major is slayed and the rest of the show continues without the drum major. This was a big deal within the marching community. I didn't know it at the time, but by watching that one show, my life would forever be changed. ...This season was the first year that I have been in color guard and marching band, even though I had previously been in band in middle school. ...People think that flag line can't compare to dance line and cheerleading. As spirit organizations we have our similarities and differences. We have to go through tryouts, after school practice, early Saturday morning practice, Friday night football games, halftime performances and band competitions. Twirling a flag is not as easy as other think it seems. Twirling a flag can be fun. You have to get dramatic with it. You have to be graceful with it and a little wild with hair flowing. First there’s tryouts. Tryouts start off as a clinic, which shows us the basic. We learn how to do carve, blue devil, sunshine, windmill, spin drops, speed drop, and how to jazz walk and run. I felt so lost when learning the jazz walk and run. It feels like we were running as ducks. A carve, blue devil, windmill, and spin drop were easy to learn. A windmill when you sweep the flag by your foot and drop it behind your back and come back up with. A spin drop when down on odds and up on even but you’re going in a circle.
