Lone Survivor is a book based on the true story of the events that happened during Operation Red Wing. It was written by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Operation Red Wing was a covert Navy SEAL mission that occurred on June 28, 2005. This was a mission to obtain reconnaissance on known Taliban terrorist, Ahmed Shah in Afghanistan. The members of the mission were four Navy Seals. The four SEAL team members included Lieutenant Michael Murphy, Petty Officer Matthew Axelson, Petty Officer Danny Dietz, and Hospital Corpsman Marcus Luttrell. These four Seal team members became engulfed in a fierce firefight with a much larger group of Taliban fighters. They were outnumbered, outgunned, and were at a disadvantage in location. Despite all these limiting factors, they fought courageously and valiantly. In the words of SEAL Marcus Luttrell, they were never out of the fight. …show more content…
I really enjoyed learning about the training it takes to become a Navy SEAL. I understand now why many people do not make it through the training. I also liked the gunfight. These four men fought through mortal injuries and continued to do so. They threw themselves down a rocky cliff to evade gunfire and were shot repeatedly while falling. SEAL Luttrell described how Lt. Murphy gave his life to rescue the team, how Petty Officer Dietz died in his arms, and how Petty Officer Axelson continued to fire despite being barely able to hold his rifle any longer. I enjoyed how the Afghan tribesmen saved Marcus and tended to his injuries. These villagers especially Mohammad Gulab risked not only their own lives, but the lives of their families. The funniest part was when Marcus ran into the Afghan Special Force soldier wearing the "Bush for President" hat. I also thought how Marcus did not want to cry in front of the Army Rangers who found him. He did not want the Rangers to think they were tougher than a Navy

This is just one example of the suffrage that Marcus Luttrell went through when he joined the U.S Navy Seals in his non-fiction autobiography Lone Survivor. ...author, James C. Roberts, explains the charge of the Taliban up the hill in his journal named “Navy SEAL Tells of Tragedy and Triumph in Afghanistan.”Once the Taliban were notified of the location of the Navy Seals, it was just a matter of time before the Taliban were running up the hill after the Americans. Once an army of about two hundred Taliban came running up the mountain in route to the Seals, they knew they did not have much chance to fight them off (Roberts 10). In Schneiderman’s article, Marcus Luttrell explains his feeling when he saw that Taliban force as "My heart dropped directly into my stomach” (Schneiderman 11). The Seals fought off the Taliban the best they could, but they were pushed back too far that the only way to retreat anymore was fall down the mountain on the other side. In the end, Marcus Luttrell was the only one out of a team of four Navy Seals that survived the Taliban attack. Murphy’s decision caused his and two of his men’s lives, but it saved Marcus Luttrell’s...

...I always thought playing a field hockey game with a sprained ankle was tough, or remaining in the game after getting hit in the elbow with a pitch; that is until this past weekend. Saturday afternoon, I learned what toughness really is, in the form of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell. The 120 minutes I sat in the theater and watched Lone Survivor taught me not only the true definition of toughness, but about brotherhood and loyalty to those around you. Lone Survivor is the tale of four Navy SEALs, who as part of operation Red Wings were dropped into the mountainous region of Afghanistan to do surveillance and ultimately eliminate the leader of a pro-Taliban group, who was responsible for the recent killing of a group of marines. The film begins where all SEAL life begins, BUDs training and hell week. Although the glimpse into the training of the seals was brief, it opened the window into just mentally and physically tough America’s ultimate warriors are. From the repeated exposure to ungodly cold water, the team boat carries to the tactically operations; these men are tested every which way possible. We are introduced to our four main characters: Marcus Luttrell, Mike Murphy, Matt Axelson and Danny Dietz, as the group is experiencing the all too common down time between missions. Very quickly the action heats up as the four are briefed on their mission and begin preparations.
