Kennedy, in which he wrote about a hugely popular Civil Rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the need to protect King due to his importance in the movement. Robinson writes that, “should harm come to Dr. King…the restraint of many people all over this nation might burst its bonds and bring about a brutal bloody holocaust the like of which this country has not seen” (Zeiler 118). One thing to notice is that Robinson is talking directly to President Kennedy and is asking Kennedy to do what he can to protect King. At this point Robinson is at a position where he feels comfortable enough to make a request and know that it hold value and is of the utmost importance. Robinson is in fact fully devoted to this movement and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Malcom X, another prominent activist was on the other end of the spectrum when it came to Jackie Robinson. Malcom did not agree with Robinson and his actions towards Whites and openly penned a letter to Robinson speaking of his dislike towards him, to which, Robinson responded. In the Letter to Malcom X, by Robinson, Robinson argued back to Malcom with, “You say I have never shown you my appreciation. I assume that is why the NAACP gave [me] its Spingarn medal, and why Dr. King has continuously asked me to participate in the SCLC activities” and this is in fact a response to Malcom’s complaints that he is not doing enough (Zeiler 120). According to Lawson (2010), racial segregation was a system derived from the efforts of white Americans to keep African Americans in subordinate status by denying them equal access to public facilities and ensuring that blacks lived apart from whites. During the era of slavery, most African Americans resided in the South in mainly rural areas. Though we have faced many problems bigger than segregation, discrimination and isolation, there was an even bigger problem, which was slavery. Slavery is where a person could own another person, which back then was normal for those who resided in the South. Slaves did most of the work where they lived and most of them worked in mines or on plantations, while some became servants. However, rather than achieving complete legal, political, and economic equality during the Reconstruction Era, which lasted from the end of the Civil War until 1877, African Americans continued to be second class citizens. As will be argued in this paper, African Americans experienced hardship and significant discrimination after 1877 due to racist laws, social, economic, and educational inequality; however, as laws and cultural sentiments about blacks changed during the Civil Rights Era, African Americans today have more political, economic, and educational opportunities than ever before. Culture is a way of life that is passed from one generation to the next, and societies within the culture are guided by their learned system of beliefs, feelings, and rules for living. Within the customs of their culture, people within society are taught that they share some common understandings with one another. Being taught the customs, members of society are expected to follow the traditional customs of the group. Cultural relativism recognizes that different cultures have distinct social trajectories, or chosen paths (Carpo, 2013).
