“The more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in” (Henry Green). Martin McDonagh’s productions display a reoccurring theme of violence. McDonagh’s films and playwrights contain an overload of violence but also includes humor. McDonagh’s choice of themes and how he introduces them attracts a specific audience. First, the uncensored graphic violence described in McDonagh’s production The Pillowman tends to shock the audience. Secondly, Martin McDonagh’s film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri attracts a very passionate audience who relate to the film. Since you are probably unaware, McDonagh’s film is about a mother named Mildred who is fighting for justice for her daughter who was murdered. Mildred is devoted to achieving justice for her daughter. However, I believe Mildred is also searching for closure, so she can begin to heal from her loss. A viewer of the film, Angel Ortega describes McDonagh’s film as, “…a captivating drama that engages the audience throughout the film” (n.pag.) Ortega’s statement on McDonagh’s film leads me to believe that McDonagh chose a very common and relatable topic for his film. Therefore, McDonagh’s film got lots of attention from many people with strong beliefs. In the film, McDonagh truly brings attention to the police officers who did not quite do their jobs. Larry Barszewski reporter from Sun Sentinel claims that at Andrew Pollack’s daughter’s funeral he said, “So all I can do is hope that [her shooter] gets what he deserves” (n.pag.) This statement reinforces my belief that many people feel passionate on the employees of the criminal justice system doing their jobs. Furthermore, Andrew Pollack is now fighting the criminal justice system for …show more content…
McDonagh’s film is sad and funny all in one. Death has a reoccurrence throughout the entire film, but Conroy’s personality tends to make it humorous. McDonagh’s choice to make the film include multiple different genres attracted a larger audience. When Sean Crosson says, “Six Shooter will no doubt offend and irk as many as it will impress,” his statement reinforces my belief that Six Shooter has several genres that some will love and other may hate (n.pag.) The humor and violence are shown through this one particular statement by Conrad, “I would’ve shot Marvin Gaye if I’ve been Marvin Gaye’s dad… can’t shut up” (n.pag.) Hearing Conrad say that line in the film you did not know if you should laugh or be shocked after his violent mind started to uncover. I believe if McDonagh made the film only a violent film and did not include the humor and drama then his film would have attracted a much smaller audience. McDonagh was clever when he made Six Shooter a film that can be enjoyed through comedy, violence, and/or drama. Furthermore, McDonagh’s film Six Shooter attracts an audience who enjoy comedies, dramas, and
