He then made demands that included, the trading ports should be opened to America, and to treat the prisoners well, or to give them back. The Japanese government denied his requests and Matthew Perry left. The second time he sailed to Japan, he came with many ships and all the ships stopped several miles away from the capital. The Japanese was very threatened and they made their demands. He told them that he needed to go into Edo to make demands. That threatened and scared the Japanese even more.
