...TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS Reverse Logistics in the Supply Chain a report by James R Stock Professor of Marketing and Logistics, University of South Florida James R Stock is a professor of Marketing and Logistics at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He is the author or co-author of more than 90 publications in the area of logistics. His specialities are in the areas of reverse logistics and the marketing-logistics interface. Currently, Dr Stock serves as Editor of the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management and is a frequent speaker and consultant on reverse logistics and other logistics topics throughout North America, Europe and Africa. In evaluating the importance of logistics within supply chains, many published ‘lists’ of logistics attributes have reverse logistics rated relatively low in importance. Such ratings are, however, misleading. Product quality, competitive prices, consistent order cycle times, ontime deliveries and low damage rates have traditionally been very important, and will continue to be so in the future. Today, they are the ‘price of admission’ to the competitive arena. Many competitors have reached parity on many of these important logistics attributes and they have become standard offerings of these companies and basic requirements of customers. Organisations not meeting standards on these attributes are usually not even considered in purchasing and/or outsourcing decisions. When a firm achieves acceptable...

Unilever’s one of the most popular brand is LUX. They segments LUX.’s market according to geographical locations. The cluster is divided into five parts starting from A to E. Unilever targets the urban and sub urban upper middle class and middle class segment of the population, who falls under A to C of SEC. Tactical marketing tools, 4P’s, are extensively used by the company to market LUX. Though LUX is produced in Bangladesh, Unilever Bangladesh maintains the same standard all around the globe. Since the demand for beauty soap market is to a great extent oligopolistic, variations in price lead to price war which can eventually break down the company’s market share. Thus Unilever cannot provide a better price than its competitors. But the price is affordable by most of the people. Thus it is not surprising that industries and companies vary considerably in how much they spend on promotion. Promotional expenditures might amount to 30-50% of sales in case in cosmetics industry and only 10-20% in the industrial equipment industry. Within a industry, a low and high spending companies can be found. How do companies decide on their promotion budget? ...Tax Research Memorandum To: Lauren Smith From: Date: May 18, 2012 Re: Tax Treatment of MBA education expenses Facts You incurred $15,000 in educational expenses in the course of earning a MBA. You want to deduct these expenses as an employee business expense in your tax return since your employer does not have an education expense reimbursement program. Issue The issue is (1) whether the education was required to keep your present salary, status or job and/or the education maintains or improves skills needed in your present work, and (2) whether the education was needed to meet the minimum educational requirements of your present trade or business, and (3) whether the education is part of a program of study that will qualify you for a new trade or business. Rule It has been established that education expenses can be deducted as business expenses when the education maintains or improves skills needed in your current work but the education was not needed to meet minimum requirements and did not qualify you for a new trade or business. ...MARTHY MCCASKEY* Martha McCaskey1 felt both elated and uneasy after her late Friday meeting with Tom Malone and Bud Hackert, two of the top managers in Praxis Associates’ Industry Analysis division. Malone, the division’s de facto COO, had said that upon successful completion of the Silicon 6 study, for which McCaskey was project leader, she would be promoted to group manager. The promotion would mean both a substantial increase in pay and a reprieve from the tedious field work typical of Praxis’ consulting projects. Completing the Silicon 6 project, however, meant a second session with Phil Devon, the one person who could provide her with the information required by Praxis’ client. Now, McCaskey reflected, finishing the project would likely mean following the course of action proposed by Hackert and seconded by Malone to pay Devon off. Praxis’ client, a semiconductor manufacturer based in California, was trying to identify the cost structure and manufacturing technologies of a new chip produced by one of its competitors. McCaskey and the others felt certain that Phil Devon, a semiconductor industry consultant who had worked in the competitor’s West Coast operation some 12 years earlier, could provide the detailed information on manufacturing costs and processes required by their client (see Exhibit I for a summary of the required information). Her first interview with Devon had caused McCaskey to have serious doubts both about the propriety of asking for such...

...BOB KNOWLTON CASE MBA 633: Case #2 Bellevue University December 18, 2012 DESCRIPTION This case centers on Bob Knowlton, a newly appointed project head who was promoted through a former project leader, Dr. Jerrold. Everything was going well for Knowlton until a new and brilliant addition was added to the team, Simon Fester. DIAGNOSIS The cause of the problem in this case is Knowlton’s passive characteristics. As project leader, Knowlton sees that there is tension building within the group as a result of Fester’s determination. Throughout the case we are confronted with many instances where Fester’s initiative to achieve results causes Knowlton to feel threatened and aggravated. Instead of acting as a leader and confronting the distracting nature of Fester’s behavior, Knowlton simply nods his head and agrees with everything that transpires. Fester is simply continuing his prevalent path because he feels that he is contributing progress to the project. This entire scenario could be remedied if Knowlton were to step up to the plate and act in a fashion that is consistent with his job title, leader. No one is going to hold Knowlton’s hand and correct the Fester dilemma, because it is Knowlton’s job to administer action. THEORY When provided the opportunity to confront Fester’s theories and group cooperation, Knowlton became a victim to his own passive behavior. Instead of taking charge and correcting the discrepancy of Fester’s action towards the team and himself...

...accepted this project after the director stated that it would be his baby all the way? Despite Henry Gable’s very apparent shadiness I would probably have taken the project too due to the backing that the project has. Even though the project had issues, based on all we have learned in project management, it is rare that a project has the amount of attention and backing from top executives, as well as, strong resources from the functional team. Many of the cases we studied are problematic because they did not have this type of backing and priority which in the end, created other conflicts. Do engineers with MBA’s aspire to high positions in management? I think the ones who have the unique ability and skillset of both a PM and Engineer probably do aspire to have high positions in management. However, in my limited experience, I think that most engineers would gravitate towards being a project engineer where they are experts in their field and are most comfortable with technical details as opposed to the administrative ones. Gary Anderson was a perfect example of this. I feel that many engineers lack the essential administrative and soft skills of a PM to motivate and manage a team to a successful outcome. Was Gary qualified to be project manager? I do not think that Gary was qualified to be a project manager. Just because ‘we can’ does not often mean ‘we should do.’ It was probably very easy for Gary to complete his MBA and therefore assume that he could be a project manager. However...
