...With Memorial Day right around the corner, I've seen a lot of posts telling me to remember what Memorial Day is all about, that it's more than just a BBQ. They are beautiful and inspiring and while I appreciate each and every one, I just have to say that I'm not likely to forget. I will remember always because I think about it always; on Memorial Day, on Veteran's Day, Armed Forces Day, D-Day and the anniversary of Pearl Harbor... and every other day of the year. Maybe not every minute of every day but at least once a day, something reminds me of the sacrifices that others have made on my behalf. I'm not a weepy or sentimental person by nature but over the last 10 years or so, I've cried a million tears in the names of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that I don't even know. It doesn't take much. A news article, a Facebook video, a song on the radio... all of these bring to mind a picture of courage, honor, commitment and sacrifice, things we may not stumble across too often in our daily lives but that are the very essence of every one of our troops. In my home, in my heart, these things are revered. I have cried at news articles reporting one more who will never come home. I cry at homecomings, too, but those are tears of joy. I cry for the things they've missed and the families who've missed them and I cry for the people who will never understand what their sacrifice really means. And Friends, I want you to know that I cry for your sons and daughters...

...Case Recap A.1. is the leader in the steak sauce industry and is one of the premier brands in the Kraft Foods offerings. The steak sauce giant “has little competition, substantial sales, and excellent margins” (Kerin & Peterson, 2010). The customers of A.1. are loyal and the market share of over 50% shows this. The problem facing A.1. is that Lawry’s has decided to launch a new steak sauce during the Memorial Day Weekend which is one of the holidays for the steak sauce industry due to the increase in grilling activities that take place. Lawry’s is owned by Unilever and is known for its seasonings and marinades. Lawry’s will launch its new steak sauce which has similar characteristics to the A.l. steak sauce, in both taste and appearance, and charge less per bottle as well as try to take over A.1.’s Memorial Day sales by offering a two-for$5 promotion through the supermarket Publix. This creates a problem for A.1. because the holiday weekend earns approximately 10% of its annual revenue. The question that Kraft Foods faces is how should the company react to the launch of Lawry’s steak sauce? Problem Identification The problem for Kraft Foods is figuring out how to react to the launch of the new Lawry’s steak sauce. The company has focused both time and resources on a marinade line for A.1, spending $10 million on advertising and $5 million on consumer promotion spending. “The marinade line was projected to lose about $7 million in operating profit in 2003, though...

The DilemmaLawrys, a branch of Unilever, is known as the United States leading provider of premium spice and seasoning blends, marinades, and other flavorings (Kerin and Peterson 634). In early 2003, Unilever stated that Lawrys would launch a new steak sauce with a similar taste and appearance to A.1.s product. (Kerin and Peterson 634). Lawrys chose to charge $3.99 per 11 ounce bottle, in competition with A.1.s price of $4.99 for a 10 ounce bottle (Kerin and Peterson 635). In addition, the firm formed an alliance with the supermarket Publix to run an exclusive Memorial Day advertisement with a two-for-$5 promotional price point (Kerin and Peterson 630). Holidays sales, such as those on Memorial Day, are extremely significant sources of revenue for A.1. ...On Memorial Day 2019, my family's life was changed forever. An EF3 tornado spun through Mercer County, striking my grandmother's house in Celina. This left her home in ruins. The devastation was overwhelming, and it felt like our world had been turned upside down. My grandma's house was not just a house, it was a place filled with memories. Seeing it in such a state was heart-wrenching, but it also marked the beginning of a years-long journey teaching me more than I ever could on my own. The day following the traumatic event, my uncle picked me up from school, which happened to be my last day of sixth grade. This was unusual considering he lived fifteen minutes away and I usually took the bus. Upon arrival, I witnessed many cousins, aunts,...

...salute. Some of us will remember brothers lost generations ago. Others among us will remember losses far more recent. Some of us will silently remember. Many of us will talk about them, and wonder why it wasn’t us. Some will say we were just that good. Most will say we were lucky. Others will concede it was simply God bailing us out. Whatever the reason, however, we will remember. We will reflect. We will mourn. Often, when soldiers go about the business of soldiering, the rest of the world goes on and barely notices us. Monday will be no different. As we stand in salute, grills will be fired up. Pools will be splashed into. Beaches will be visited, and beers will be popped open. The people of this country will enjoy their day off, but how many will realize what it is for? How many people will consider what it means? While many will know there is a parade, how many will know why there is a parade? Please understand, I have nothing against bar-be-ques. I have nothing against beaches, pools, or beer. These are all great things. But I think most Americans take them for granted. I don’t know if it was always this way, or if this is the result of the general apathy associated with my generation. I suspect there has always been a difference between us and civilians. I also suspect there was a time when civilians appreciated us more. This country, our way of life, is not a birthright. What we have, we achieved at a great price. And do you want to know something;...

...enjoying a day off of work to come together and celebrate. But what are we really celebrating? Why is everyone so happy on such a gloomy day? How did we lose touch with what this day really means and why we as a nation recognize this across the board despite race, sex, religion or political agenda? Since when did we think that Memorial day was about our right to cook food, laugh, and get paid for not working instead of honoring the fallen heroes who gave us such a great opportunity, rather than recognize that it was a privilege. I found two poems that seem to have the same view as I do on Memorial day, as they focused on veterans and the sacrifice made by them. I believe that as a society we have lost touch with the true meaning of Memorial day, which in my opinion is a day to recognize the sacrifice made by our fallen. When I was growing up I have a very distinct memory of traveling to New Hampshire where my grandfather, a Marine, was the parade leader for the Memorial Day parade. It was a big deal to get such an honor, and even at ten years old, I knew this day was important. Now I will admit being raised in a military family with a mother and father both as Marines, a grandfather, an uncle all in the corps, with...

...that the builders had to take many things into consideration. People who built the monuments had to take many things into consideration when building a monument, like the size and place. If people take the location, size, and funding into consideration they will be able to build a long lasting monument. The first reason why it is important to memorialize people is because they have to take multiple things into consideration when they are building it. One thing that the people have to take into consideration when building the monument is how are they going to get the materials they need. This is important because if the people do not have the materials that they need they may not be able to make the monument. In an article named Making the Memorial they stated, “I imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in the earth with a polished, mirrored surface, much like the surface on a geode when you cut it and polish the edge.” Source G (Lin) By them wanting to cut into the earth it can make people think that they do not have the materials to do this to the land, but what they do not know is that the materials can be used to memorialize the people who are important. The Second reason why it is important to memorialize people is because the people who are making the monument have to take many things into consideration. For example...

...1.Memorial Day, first known as decoration day, originated from when many women went to the battlefields looking for their lovers remains. As a result, it’s more formal beginning arose at Charleston's in South Carolina; around 10,000 people had decorated the cemeteries on May 1, 1865. 2. Many activities started after 1890 to celebrate Memorial Day with bike racing, picnics, and even baseball games. The southerners would deliver speeches consisting of how they had not fought for slavery but for their independence, eventually leading them to the “cult of the lost cause”. On the other hand, Northerners would have young girls dress in white and perform as flower bearers to cemeteries. The North celebrated their victory over slavery and rebellion....

...“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do”-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. . All my team needed to do was keep that quaote in mind and we would be going home with the trophy. It all started one week or so before Memorial Day weekend. My dad got an email saying that my team will be hosting a baseball tournament at our home fields. Every night from there on out we practiced, and we worked hard every day because we knew that this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. The day finally came. The head coach's son Sam Cerimele asked me, “ Are you ready?” “Yeah, let’s put a hurting on these teams!” I exclaimed.” It's time to win our first tournament!” Wampler Complex was full of people from all over Pennsylvania, the vibe was ecstatic, there was music blaring, people cheering, clapping, and whistling. ...The size of the monument should commemorate the event or the work of the historical figure. The size of the monument must ensure that the event or the person gets the right amount of recognition. The Commission of Fine Arts stated that the designs for the Holocaust Museum was too “massive” and that it would overcome the Mall (Source E). The monument has to be able to fit the given space and fit properly with the surrounding area. The right choice of materials is also crucial. The materials should be chosen carefully and with great consideration. Maya Lin, who was the designer for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, chose black granite so that it would make the surface reflective and peaceful (Source G). Maya Lin also decided to put two walls where one faced the Lincoln Memorial and the other one toward the Washington Monument (Source G). She picked out the materials with care. ...Memorials are variant by nature. They can be as complex as a whole museum based off a historical event, or they can be as simple as writing a tune that’s dedicated to a close friend. They can be completely personal - or they can be simply for remembrance. Monuments, however, are a bit more formal. A monument, by definition, is a structural figure whether it being a building, statue, or any other construction, that was built solely for the purpose to pay tribute to an acclaimed or significant person/event. When the location, size, material, and purpose for the monument is all carefully thought out, the monument becomes greatly successful in honoring what or who it was built for, thus achieving it’s purpose for existence. Therefore, these factors must be considered by the group or agency when constructing a monument....
