In 1994, not long after the birth of her first son, Yates “felt the presence of Satan in her kitchen, and in hallucination, saw an image of a knife...Satan’s voice told her to pick up the knife and stab her child” (Michalopoulos 2003). Her mental health issues surfaced strongly in February 1999 after the birth of her fourth son, Luke. She stated that her father and two out of her four siblings were diagnosed with depression and her third sibling with bipolar disorder. At one point, Rusty Yates took the children to stay with her mother because she “became agitated and withdrawn” (Commerson 2003).
