In order to gain more knowledge about young Psychosocial Development in Merging and adulthood, I interview a young lady in college who is approaching her 30th birthday in January. For the purpose of this interview I will called the young lady Paige, a factious name to protect her privacy. Paige is the only child for her parents. She grew up in an upper class neighborhood in Greenwich where money wasn’t an option for luxury. Both her parents are still alive and a fixture in the social life like Donald Trump. When I asked Paige about what influences her path and becoming an adult, she answered with angelic smile that life experience and her environment forces her to be an adult at an early age as 13. For example my mom had been sick at home with Osteoporosis (a joint disease) since I was 12 years of age. I had to make sure she was properly care for at night, by assisting with medication and her frequent bathroom visits. My parents had so much pride to have a living care giver. They don’t want the stigma of been sick and unable to be a nursing home picture to anyone in their social circle. I noticed at the end of her answer she got really joyfully like a child getting her first Barbie doll. In addition to that, Paige mention that she her parents thought her at early age that financial and educational success is not an option. She was helping her dad in his Law office every other weekend which earned her $20.00 “chuckle”. Moreover, Spanish and Piano classes was an after school program that I enjoyed because I get to socialized with my wealthy friends like the Jacksons.
Due to the fact that my parents was and still involve in my life, my time away from home made our relationship more emotional attached. My mom would recited a Maya Angelo poem, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it. This would made me felt like I can be the next Oprah. My dad on the other hand would make sure that I am in need of everything money can buy. However, Thanksgiving was like an energy buster for me because it give me more time to bond with my mom and shared personal college life experience. Like talking about my first kiss and heart break. At this point, based on Paige’s candid honest answers to my questions, I asked her if she believed her personality has changed during adult hood. Paige responded stating that the credential of adulthood for merging young possess many challenges for various reason: Education, adjustment and family life. To answer your question, yes it does. Not having a roommate in college forces me to be more independent and self-reliable. What I am saying is not having my meal served to me when I wanted it was major change for me. My personality was over bearing with a lot of negative complaint about college life. For example, my dorm is too far from the cafeteria, the food is horrible and I can’t stand walking in the snow to class. In addition to that my career goals change from Doctor to Journalist and finally my view on social class has change. My Boyfriend is from Marcy Project in Brooklyn. It’s not where you are from but where you are going.
While interviewing Paige, I realized that she has experienced varied paths to adulthood. For instance she was forced to be responsible at an early, helping her mom at night when she should be sleeping. In the book Papalia consider Paige changes as Influences on Paths to Adulthood- Individual paths to adulthood are influenced by such factors as gender, academic ability, race and ethnicity (page 452). Another important concept was Developing Adult Relationship with Parents- Young adult leave home, they must complete the negation of autonomy begun in adolescence and redefine their relationship with their parents as between adulthood. (Papalia 455). In this concept Paige parents made frequent phone calls to maintain their relationships and ensure that all her necessity is taken care of financially. As for Paige personality changes, it is similar to Erikson’s four views on Personality Development: Normative-stage Model –Theoretical models that describe psychosocial development in terms of a definite sequence of age –related changes. (Page 457).
Timing-of events models- Theoretical model of personality development that describes adult psychosocial development as a response to the expected or unexpected occurrence and timing of life important life events. (Page 458).
Trait Models – Theoretical models of personality development that focus on mental, emotional, temperamental, and behavioral traits or attributes. (Page 459).
Typological models- Theoretical approach that identifies broad personality types, or styles. (Page 461).I believed she had gone through all these four stage base on her final answer about personality changes.
In summary, this interview with a young a young adult confirmed my believed that young adults struggles with Erikson’s psychosocial stage of development. For instance, the challenges of finding meaning full connection without losing oneself in the process. This interview also helps enlighten me on the fact that emerging adults firmly affix to their parents or guardian who view them as having used an authoritative child—rearing style are more likely to have coordinated parents social class or educational belief. In their own world.

Does Anyone Really Know How Parents and Teenagers Co-Exist?

...Eillan Jennings Professor Annie Murray English 1550 Research Essay 18 November 2011 Does Anyone Really Know How Parents and Teenagers Co-exist? Well I know anyone can relate to having an argument or two with their parents over the course of time but does understand how that the adolescent stage of a person’s life is this most important stage of their life. I believe personally that parents should allow their teenagers the freedom to make their own decisions because of the circumstances that will be soon to come. I am writing this essay to describe why teenagers should be able to express their rights as adults. Either the term close restriction or freedom of expression, of the young teenage mind is meant for some than the other. We are all lucky that we live in a country where freedom becomes a right and I believe that along with conducting themselves responsibly that teenagers should be able to express themselves and be able to experience the freedom they will receive in adulthood, which is expressed into greater detail in the news article “Psychologist Explains Teens’ Risky Decision-Making Behavior” from sciencedaily.com which elaborates on why teenagers have the tendencies that they have. Well as anyone can relate everyone we know in one way or another was raised differently from each other, including myself in their matter. But we all have one thing in common, we feel that at times it is wrong for a certain person to be dictate our lives as if we had no way of being...

Early and Middle Adulthood Paper

...and health-affecting habits. Middle adulthood differs from young adulthood in social needs (although the basic need for socialization remains the same), and represents a shift in attitude about relationships and vocations that moves from fluidity to stability. Health practices are also at work here, with factors such as diet, exercise, and drug use in young adulthood impacting middle adulthood later on. Erikson believed that people need constant contact with others throughout their lives, from birth to death, whether that contact is romantic intimacy or a relationship with friends and family. In romantic relationships, young adults tend to be “serially monogamous” [ (Berger, 2010) ], or remaining emotionally or sexually involved with only one person for a period of time, though the relationship is rarely permanent, and the young adult may have many of these relationships during this stage of his or her life. This is typical for the age group, which is characterized by an unwillingness to commit permanently to a job, a spouse, or even an educational program. Young adults today are markedly different from young adults in the previous generation, in that they marry later and may not start families or enter a permanent vocation until they are well into middle adulthood, or around their late twenties or early thirties; this is in part due to greater life expectancy and more accessible birth control, allowing young adults to experiment before settling down to permanency [ (Berger...

Plastic Surgery

...has always been important, mainstream acceptance of plastic surgery has created a society that values appearance over ability. Teenage girls and middle-aged women seek acceptance based on their appearance in all aspects of their lives. Teenage girls want to be the prettiest and the thinnest due to the pressure of society and their peers. Middle aged women pursue plastic surgery in hopes of enhancing their looks and looking younger than what they are. Today’s society is so centered on appearance that it can be very misleading to the minds of young girls and women. There are images of female bodies everywhere in today’s society. Women are used to sell everything from cars to food. Television and big screen movie actresses are typically tall, young looking and thin. The majority of these famous women have used some type of fad diet or practiced mal nutrition. There are articles everywhere urging women and young girls to lose weight. They make claims that beauty and the perfect body will provide the perfect marriage and rewarding lifestyles. Beauty truly is only skin deep. One cannot achieve what they desire based on their looks alone. You can turn on the TV or open any magazine such as US Weekly and see the latest cosmetic surgery that some actress recently underwent. There are publications everywhere promoting what’s new in the world of cosmetic surgery. If you type in “cosmetic surgery” in Google, you will come up with an astonishing number...

...she declares that all the teenagers she knew had profiles on facebook. The writer of this article wonders about how much leeway teenagers should have at home. She uses these two examples above to remind parents of teenagers, to be on guard at all times. She claims teenagers are not young adults, even though they try to come across as mature and sophisticated. Furthermore the parents should not be fooled by this because they are still in their formative years. They are not psychologically and mentally competent enough to deal with big decisions or responsibility .A Mrs. Johnson, local therapist, claims that one should be firm when dealing with teenagers. She urges parents of teenagers to show respect, and honesty in their dealings with them. Furthermore, to always remember that teenagers are still in the formative years. That they should never give in to demands of instant gratification. That there should be open communication and press upon them that every action has consequences and to be very involved in the life of these teenagers in a way that would not breed resentment. She describes hard it was, to allow her own daughter, even though legally an adult, to go on her own. She adds that adults should always look ahead. These problems with teenagers are not forever.. . Julie Baumgatner(JB)`s view on the upbringing of teenagers seems a bit unrealistic. We all know that children lie, teenagers lie and parents do lie. Sometimes a lie is necessary as...

Social Media and Online Predators

... the easier it becomes for online predators to victimize them. According to Richard M. Guo, “an online sexual predator is someone who uses the internet to sexually exploit vulnerable individuals, typically under-aged youths” (“Stranger Danger and the Online Social Network”). Online predators use many ways to lurk in young individuals. One of those ways are by impersonating someone. For example, the predator would pose as a younger teenager to appeal to other young teenagers. Then they would follow up by striking up conversations with those young teenagers in hopes of building up a certain trust level which would lead to easy access for the predator to attack the young teen. Having access to victimize the individual can lead to many outcomes. Those outcomes includes date rape, kidnapping, and sex trafficking. The way the predator would go about committing one of those outcomes is by asking the teen to meet up somewhere as a friendly invite. In the end their intention would be to harm the teen. The predator can also the threaten or blackmail the teen into doing what they say to do. Predators use a variety or tricks to get what they want from young teenagers. When it comes to social media, there are plenty of steps one can take to assure maximum safety. Utilizing privacy settings is an efficient way to monitor who can view a profile (“Online Predators”). By making a profile private, strangers would not be able to send messages. When keeping a profile private...

Family of Woodstock Paper

...Jessica K Hirsch Family of Woodstock Paper May 5,2014 Professor Joyce Yip Green Family of Woodstock is more than a gate away for teens and young adults; it’s the exact opposite. As and interviewee for the upcoming position here at the organization, I would like to give you my full appreciation and any knowledge or reasoning of why I applied. When looking at what organization that I should apply for after getting my degree in human service, I was lending more to helping those young people of our country. Reading and learning what this organization has to offer for the young adolescents that are in need as well as the young adult, I felt right at home to where I need to provide my skills. Here is a little bit of what amazed me and what I appreciated this organization for. Preparing an organization is hard, understanding the needs of others and what they possess more of is difficult unless one has a heart for it. As the organization of Family of Woodstock began, the founders found several factors that led them to create such an inspirational organization. From learning and understanding exactly why young teens and adults just decided to escape the confines of the world they were living in and helping them get the proper material they need had to be grateful thought out. Once the problem was recognized, there were actual reasons to plan an organization that would help provided needs and materials...

The Fault in Our Starts Critique

...cancer sufferer, protagonist and narrator, lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she is forced by her overprotective mother to go to cancer support groups as an effort to meet friends. The bond demonstrated between Hazel and her mother was both a believable and a relatable mother-daughter relationship. It is at this support group, that Hazel meets her best friend and first love, Augustus Waters. Their relationship shows how much more meaningful life can be if you have someone to share important experiences with. It also amplifies that although the couple is young and both have suffered from hardships, including cancer, it does not get in the way of the pair building a relationship, a skill that many could learn from. Throughout the novel, Hazel does not let the illness that she has been marked with stop her from having goals or dreams. It is shown through the authors writing style, that the target audience is young adults. John Green is able to do this successfully by having the story told through the eyes of an adolescent, creating the tone and dialogue as though it is told by a teenager, making it relatable to a younger audience. The dialogue between Hazel and her love interest, Augustus, is both romantic and playful, when Augustus...

Teens at Risk

...Teens at Risk By Robert Morris My book is about teens at risk in life. It talks about the violence, pregnancy, what happens to them when there is no father, and drug and alcohol. I have a lot of friends who go thru this in life. Its mess up that’s teens go thru this in life. All they need is mentor, somebody that will talk to them about the bad stuff in life. . First, pregnancy is really bad in teenage life. A lot of them have babies in their teenage life. Most teenage mothers are single and receive no support from the father. They might end up having another baby and not thinking and make another mistake. Most of them don’t finish high school cause of all the work they have to do with the baby and it be stressing them out all the time. Then sometimes people don’t get help from the family and they get really mad. They should have had second thoughts before they did it. If they just wait until they get out of school and get a good job they will be ok having a child. Second, then you got drugs and alcohol. This is also bad for teens and have of them don’t know what they putting their self into when they do drugs and alcohol. Then when teenagers start smoking cigarettes then they will go to a store and buy some without showing proof of age. All stores should always ask for a id when somebody buy stuff like that because you don’t know who you selling them things to. Sometimes teenagers will have someone that’s older go in the store and have someone buy them some...

American Teen

...games, the dances, the people (sometimes), the clubs, my teachers, my friends, the list goes on. I probably liked high school more than a teenager usually does (I wasn't as eager to leave at graduation time as everyone else seemed to be). Throughout high school, judging by myself and all of my dynamic peers, it never once occurred to me who was 'typical" and who was not. However even at nineteen, my perception of a "typical" American teenager is the same as it was when I was seventeen: angst-y, dramatic, gossipy, party-hungry, and sexual. So if I was still in high school and had the same image of a "typical" teen as I do now, yet no one around me really embodied it, why did I have that image? Stereotypes. It is because of stereotypes that adults, and yes, even teenagers believe that said traits are what the typical American teenager embodies. There are stereotypes that classify 'cliques' in high school, and imply that all schools have cliques, but the main stereotype of "typical" teens seems to be one that groups all teens together under a view similar to mine of a "typical" teenager. These stereotypes are perpetuated mainly through media: movies, books, songs, and even news. They paint a picture of a teen who is, in my opinion after my own experiences and especially after watching American Teen, not very accurate. Having been an American teen, and being around them for so many years, I never saw myself nor anyone I knew to embody the stereotype that is the "typical" American teen...

Protecting Our Teenagers

...Protecting Our Teenagers in the Workforce We are living in a society that is very sexually charged, everything we see from commercials to entertainment is all geared toward sex. Our teens are working in an environment that is much different than what we worked in. “One in three teenagers have reported to being sexually harassed at work” (Cover, 2013). The legal definition of sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical contact (Noe, 2011). There are different types of sexual harassment so it is important that teenagers are aware of these. Some include sexual bribery, sexual coercion and sexual advances. The Equal employment opportunity commission (EEOC) has developed a web site that can help teens understand their rights, give examples of sexual harassment and even have a link to help file a claim. The EEOC has created a website that is just for teen in the work force. It’s called Youth at Work and it can be found at www.eeoc.gov. I think that this is a very good website for teens.
