Imagine that you have been assigned to a team that will be developing an inventory tracking system. As part of the project startup, your manager has asked each team leader to bring a basic work plan to the next meeting. QUESTION 2: CREATING AN ENTITY-RELATIONSHP DIAGRAM (25 points).
UPS prides itself on having up-to-date information on the processing and current location of each shipped item. To do this, UPS relies on a company-wide information system. Shipped items are the heart of the UPS product tracking information system. Shipped items can be characterized by item number (unique), weight, dimensions, insurance amount, destination, and final delivery date. Shipped items are received into the UPS system at a single retail center. Retail centers are characterized by their type, uniqueID, and address. Shipped items make their way to their destination via one or more standard UPS transportation events (i.e., flights, truck deliveries).
These transportation events are characterized by a unique scheduleNumber, a type (e.g, flight, truck), and a deliveryRoute.

Please identify one instance where a data redundancy issue exists. (3 pts).
Answer: Examples include:
- Both production description and product type are being stored for each and every production unit. The production description could be stored elsewhere.
- Production type and production description are being stored on each and every production unit, when these parameters are most likely the same for the entire lot.

e. The current ER diagram has the following relationship, “raw materials are used in 0 to many lots.” Please explain, in the context of the manufacturing environment, how the meaning changed if the minimal cardinality is changed to “1” (i.e., the relationship becomes "raw materials are used in 1 to many lots.”) (3 pts)
Answer: The current representation of “raw materials are used in 0 to many lots” implies that raw materials can be in the system without being designated for a specific lot. If the minimum cardinality was changed to 1, this would imply that all raw materials must be designated as related to at least one lot.

a. Data Integrity: Ensuring data integrity is an important issue in data design. Data integrity issues are addressed in each and every stage of data design. According to the book, integrity constraints “facilitate maintaining the accuracy of data in the database.” According to
Merriam Webster’s dictionary, synonyms for integrity include incorruptibility, soundness, and completeness.
Please identify two features of data design that embody data integrity concerns. For each, describe how the feature is related to the general issue of data integrity. The examples can come from the same and/or different phases of the data design process. (8 pts - 4 pts each)
Examples of answers include:
- Minimum cardinality constraints (identified during conceptual design) indicate the minimum number of relationships that MUST exist.
- During physical design, the definition of each attribute can include constraints on the values of the attribute.

...Analysis of Carcinus maenas ingestion rates Materials and methods Part 1 - Control experiment Two mussels (mytilus edulis) were opened and the mussels inside cut into 4 pieces, producing 8 pieces of roughly equal size in total. A balance was then tared with a weighing boat placed on it. Each piece of mussel flesh was placed individually and in turn into the weighing boat to be weighed. The pieces were then placed into a plastic bucket half filled with filtered seawater. The weight, time of weighing and time of immersion into the bucket were all noted down for each piece of mussel. The position of each piece of flesh inside the bucket was also taken down so as not to mix them up. One of the eight pieces was left in the bucket for the duration of the experiment until being removed and weighed at the end and was written down as “the last”. Another piece was removed frequently throughout the experiment and was given the name “the one”. The last 6 pieces were each removed once and weighed at regular intervals to provide a range of submersion times. The experiment was run for roughly 20 minutes. The method for removing and weighing the pieces of mussel was kept consistent throughout the experiment. Each piece was removed, blotted clear of any excess water and weighed. If the piece of mussel was “the one”, it was returned to the bucket of seawater, if not, it was kept aside and moist for the crab feeding (Part 2).
