...1.1 English Composition II Minimum Wage Poverty has become an ever growing problem in the United States. Many programs have been put into place to try and help those suffering from poverty, one is minimum wage, but is minimum wage helping people get out of poverty or keeping them in it? Minimum wage is the lowest possible wage a person can earn despite if the job may be worth more than minimum wage. With that the employees feel they are underpaid, and become unmotivated to perform their job. The government feels that minimum wage is acceptable median to decide a persons wage, but what they don’t take into account anymore is the inflation and cost-of-living that increases each year while minimum wage stays the same, forcing people to work long hours just to barely make enough to pay the bills. Its easy for the government not to care about such topics when they eat $1,000 a plate, which is more than some people make in a month. Although minimum wage was put into order to protect workers, can a minimum wage job really support you in a search for basic standards of living? And if not does the increase in minimum wage really help or hurt people surviving off of it? Its hard to find a good job with no college experience, and its very hard to go to school when you can’t even pay your own bills due to a minimum wage job. It’s a hard situation that isn’t fair to the hard working community of people who manage to keep...

...Brooks Comm 215 MINIMUM WAGE, MINIMAL EXPENSES In North Carolina, minimum wage is set to the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour, which is obtained by using a "Cost of Living Formula". (N.A.) Establishments such as fast food restaurants, casual eateries, coffee shops, and those with sales associate positions are among those that start their employees at minimum wage. So far, we see that sales associates who are required to do minimal tasks, provide customer service, wait tables, or serve coffee are among those who earn a minimum wage paycheck. For years there has been much ado among people of the minimum wage class, and those slightly above it, sparking controversy over the feeling that the minimum wage is not set high enough. However, as someone who was very recently counted in that class, I must strongly disagree. From 2011 to 2014 I had various jobs in the food service and customer service industries, all at minimum wage except for one or two of those, and often holding more than one job at a time. My experience and skills that I had gathered eventually afforded me a higher paycheck, but not by much. During my time at these various establishments, I met a variety of different people; from teenagers, young and old mothers, and single people just trying to support themselves, even people who had previously been in jail. I learned from these people (and their attitudes while working) that they did not value their jobs. The famous line among minimum wage employees is "I don't...

...present unrest. Frequent labor unrest in clothing manufacturing sector; strikes by labors & their unions; has become common in Bangladesh. Most obvious reason for the unrest is wages & increments up to a level, which could help them to live a minimal life. Is it legal demand of the labors or labor unions to raise their monthly wages from Tk.1600 (US$ 25) to Tk.5000 (US$ 70)? In fact with the high inflation in food and energy price, it is getting difficult for the workers to live with the present lowest monthly wage of Tk.1600. Most of the owners of the clothing factories can realize the reality, but they are unable to increase the wages as demanded by the labor unions. They are not making such a high profit to meet their demands. Could ‘minimum wage’ announcement by Wage Board of Bangladesh solve the labor unrest in Bangladesh? I doubt because; if the Wage Board announces minimum wage more than present limit, then present clothing industry might get one big shock, which could lead the clothing industry of our country in the verge of destruction. There could be few possible outcomes, following implementation of the announcement. The first one is the premium organizations of the sector; namely BGMEA and BKMEA; can ask the government for monetary stimulus package to full fill higher wages. Other most likely consequent is permanent...

...availability of people‘s leisure time and disposable income. A hospitality unit such as the hotel, restaurant or even an entertainment park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance, front office, housekeepers, kitchen workers, bartenders and so on. Management, marketing and human resource come together to serve the customers. Within each of the department, human labor is needed to produce goods and service to customers. Employees are therefore a company’s most valuable assets in every industry including the hospitality industry but worldwide researchers have suggested that, employee turnover is very high in the hospitality industry. Generally speaking, employee turnover is the rate at which an employer gains and requires minimal skill, minimal educational requirements and no prior experience. These positions are easily filled due to the fact that many hospitality companies do not perform proper background checks on potential employees. Some of the basic characteristics of the hospitality industry that makes it have a high employee turnover are; * Labor pool: the labor pool for the hospitality industry is often untrained,...

...Wage is relevant in the Production sector which is the supply sector. Wage affects the Supply curve. The individual producing, has to look at his bill in this case his wage bill. The supply curve’s relationship is between price of production and quantity produced (the quantity supplied). An ordinary curve should move your supply curve from left to right but in a market where there is Minimum wage, the supply curve remains parallel to the quantity supplied according to the graph. This is because due to the minimum wage the producer supplies less because he is producing less just because he cannot reduce his price. Therefore in this type of market QS cannot meet his demand because he would rather keep his price down, therefore no equilibrium, therefore black markets come to play and rationing. An example of this is in some African petroleum markets, the government imposes a false fixed price on gas therefore setting in black market and rationing of petroleum when it is rationed, there is scarcity and prices shoot up for the available product. With all said the supplier gains because he can set the price of his rationed product as he pleases and the consumer loses (they have to purchase at a very high price and deal with the scarcity especially if it’s an essential product). The alternative to achieving this same policy would be to take away or have minimal government intervention and leave it to DD and SS but then there will be consequences which we cannot predict. The elasticity’s...

...Case Study: Getting and Using Compensation Information “Compensation is a systematic approach to providing monetary value to employees in exchange for work performed. Compensation may achieve several purposes assisting in recruitment, job performance, and job satisfaction. Compensation is a tool used by management for a variety of purposes to further the existence of the company. Compensation may be adjusted according to the business needs, goals, and available resources.” The three careers I chose for this case study are Public Relations Specialist, High School Teacher, and Project Coordinator. The reason for me choosing these specific careers was that I’ve held each one at some point in time. In this case study we will examine why each job has different salary ranges and why. Question #1 Doing this research I’ve come to find that out of the three jobs that I selected, a project coordinator is paid the most on average. The project coordinator is paid $89,509 a year on average. I was shocked to find out that out of the three careers chosen, that a public relations specialist is paid the least of all three. The public relations specialist on average is paid $45,931 a year. I expected that the project coordinator position would be the highest paid out of the three, however I did not expect for the teacher to be paid more ($53,447 a year on average) than the public relations specialist. I expected the teacher to be paid the least of all three. Usually teachers are thought...

Knight: They’re not 12-year-olds working in factories... the minimum age is 14. Moore: How about 14 then? Does that bother you? Knight: No. — Phil Knight, Nike CEO, talking to Director Michael Moore in a scene from documentary film The Big One, 1997. Nike is raising the minimum age of footwear factory workers to 18… Nike has zero tolerance for underage workers. 1 — Phil Knight, 1998 In 1997, Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong died while making sneakers. As she was trimming synthetic soles in a Nike contracting factory, a co-worker’s machine broke, spraying metal parts across the factory floor and into Phuong’s heart. The 23 year-old Vietnamese woman died instantly.2 Although it may have been the most dramatic, Phuong’s death was hardly the first misfortune to hit Nike’s far-flung manufacturing empire. Indeed, in the 1980s and 1990s, the corporation had been plagued by a series of labor incidents and public relations nightmares: underage workers in Indonesian plants, allegations of coerced overtime in China, dangerous working conditions in Vietnam. For a while, the stories had been largely confined to labor circles and activist publications. By the time of Phuong’s death, however, labor conditions at Nike had hit the mainstream. Stories of reported abuse at Nike plants had been carried in publications...

...As a Human Resources Manager, the level of supply and demand in the labour market affects the recruitment and retention of employees. Before I analyse the impacts of supply and demand in the labour market, I will first define what the labour market is in the context of HRM. According to Wilton 2013, labour markets are “the mechanism by which human labour is bought and sold and how the number and type of available jobs, the labour demand, is matched with the number and type of available workers, the labour supply.” In other words, employers are the buyers of labour with the employees being the seller. Labour markets can be segmented in many different ways, such as geographic location, occupation, or industry but for the purposes of this case study the labour market will be organised along the lines of occupation as I am trying to recruit staff for two different occupations. The supply and demand for these labour markets differ, as there is a greater supply of catering employees than registered midwives. According to the Department of Employment 2014, there is a shortage of midwives both in Sydney and regional NSW, particularly with experienced midwives as 40 percent of employers unable to find suitable applicants. As of 2014, there has been a 20.1 percent decrease in registered midwives since 2011 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2015) due to the introduction of the new regency of practice standards that require midwives to actively be working in midwifery to maintain...

...Australians at the turn of the century, there was almost no time for anything other than work because their lives revolved around their jobs. Many men felt pressured to work because of the popular belief that the man should be the 'breadwinner' (the person responsible for supporting the family). Women and children from poor families also had to seek employment because a single wage was often not enough to provide for the entire family. They usually had to work exceptionally long hours, in poor conditions and received little pay in return. Awards, such as the four weeks annual leave that Australian workers are entitled to today, were inconceivable at the turn of the century. (For more detail, refer to Chapter 1: Life and Working Conditions) Housing The housing of the working class was dangerous, unsanitary and overcrowded. At the turn of the century, the size of the average family was much larger than it is today. It was not uncommon for families to have in excess of eight children. In low-income families, the more children they had the more people there were to help out with household duties or to earn a wage outside of the home. Houses were smaller than they are today, which left many city-dwelling families having to squeeze into homes in small, inner-city terraces or houses built in clustered rows...

...and services due to higher buying power. The increasing buying power caused consumers to be less price-sensitive and prioritizes quality. Organisations find quality to be a crucial matter in determining their success. Hence, many organisations have moved from producing low cost goods into producing quality goods to meet with the market demand. Meeting quality expectations of the guests is decent, but arguably insufficient. Exceeding it however, guarantees customer loyalty, returned business and less complains. Evan (2011) added that quality, business stability and customer’s loyalty needed to be aligned for a success business. Quality in manufacturing industry focuses on technical issues such as equipment reliability, inspections and minimal defects. On the other hand, quality in service industry focuses on the interactions between the provider and customer which do not directly produce a physical product. The service industry picks up the importance of quality later than the manufacturing industry. Evan (2011) mentioned that the 80% workforce in the United States is contributed by the service industry. Body According to Das and De Groote (2008), 75% of the one hundred biggest hotels are controlled by the top ten hotel chains around the globe. In this modern age, people travel at ease due to easy accessibilities and communications have improved into a global state, all thanks to the technology. Dreher A. (2006) mentioned that economists strongly believe the net effect of...
