In modern day America standards of beauty are virtually unattainable and made that way by main stream media. Even though the standards of beauty are set so unrealistic by companies using models to show off the products they are trying to sell, all people want to do is look like the celebrities that are shown. By showing the attractive celebrities in their ads they are making you think that buying their product will make you look like them or help you achieve a goal of looking like them. From something as simple as a box of cereal to a new car, companies are using celebrities in their ads to make it seems like they are the best and that you should buy their product. In today’s world you seem to never see ordinary looking people in advertisements because that is not what sells. In modern day America standards of beauty are virtually unattainable and made that way by main stream media.

Nick Jonas turned heads when he was featured in Flaunt Magazine wearing only Calvin Klein underwear and jeans around his ankles. In the ad you see four pictures of Nick in different poses all wearing the same thing and looking directly at the camera. Imagine being a male teen and seeing an ad for Calvin Klein with a ¾ naked Nick Jonas. They are immediately going …show more content…
One would think that in an ad for a specific clothing brand would put their name more than just one time and barely visible in the picture. The company is not ensuring you of anything in the ad. They are not telling you that you will feel more confident or that you will look like this if you buy their product. It does not matter that they are not telling us these things because they people that see this are going to think it to some extent anyways. The ad also has no other wording in the entire ad. The fact it has a lack of wording in the add furthermore proves that they are using Nick’s body to sell the product and not the product

...In modern society, advertising is used as a powerful tool to communicate a message. But it is more than simply selling a product. Advertisers not only just sell products, they sell ideals, values and normalcy. They also help to create or express consumers' identity, including gender (Van den Bulck, Van Hellemont 623). Gender roles are defined as the behavioural patterns indicating to others you are a male or a female. In other word, this is also linked to masculinity and femininity. In North America, advertising labels masculinity with traits such as dominance, assertiveness and independence. Through an analysis of a case study of anti-aging cream aimed towards women, this paper will argue that all advertising fundamentally plays on dominant ideologies to make people believe that in order to be “normal” or “successful”, they must buy product X. When one considers the context of the ad, and that this advertisement targeted the female demographic in America during the 1950’s it kind of makes sense that the ad may have been persuasive. The 50’s can be regarded as one of the happiest decades in American history, it was the end of World War two and the economy was expanding to a global standard. There were two forms of advertising in the 50’s era, pathos and logos. Looking at it from the 50’s perspective, the housewife wants to use this product to look appealing to her husband because in that time the women stayed at home and looked after the home while the men worked. In this ad, Palmolive targets the growing population of suburban women and uses rhetorical strategies that will appeal to emotion and logic.
