...Modern American music is one of the greatest contribution to the arts in the United States’ history, but it wasn’t developed overnight. The origin story of modern American music, and all of its genres, is a long one filled with tragedy, exploration, and a fusion of cultures. While many of people have a particular genre of music they like more than the others, it’s appalling that they don’t know how these pieces of art were constructed for their enjoyment. Before people can learn about the development of modern American music, they must first learn about the origin of music itself. It’s safe to assume that ever since human beings have been on this planet we’ve been humming a tune or tapping a beat. However, the first documented record of music came from ancient Mesopotamia in the form of religious chant. It is very...

...The Value of Music in Basic Education “Music happens to be an art form that transcends language.” Herbert Jeffrey Hancock, famed American musician, defined music’s transcendental nature very aptly. Music is now widely recognized as a learning medium, an educational tool, and a means of expressiveness of creativity. Modern education emphasizes the importance of using learning methods that will effectively teach children having a variety of learning needs. The old “one size fits all” education system is rapidly being overcome by a more flexible and welcoming system that caters to each child’s individual learning needs. Elementary education is the first level of learning children are exposed to so it is imperative that their foundation is concrete and long lasting. Contrary to rote memorization techniques of the past, modern teaching techniques let children learn at their own pace. In some cultures inclusion of music as a learning element from an early age is not an alien concept at all, e.g. in ancient Indian, Chinese, and even African American cultures. It has been a part of everyday cultural and religious learning for young children. In his paper “The History and Development of Multicultural Music Education as Evidenced in the Music Educators Journal, 1967-1992”, Terese M. Volk sheds light on how music educators were initially encouraged to adopt a multicultural music perspective and include all kinds of music in their curriculum. The paper describes in detail the struggle...

...Research Memo Date: October 16, 2013 To: Prof. Hastings From: Riki Kotaka Subject: How do music companies address the issue the music sales has been declining? Introduction Music is essential for our lives, however it is difficult for those who get involved with music industry to make a profit. Music industry has been shrinking since 1999 when Napster, pioneering music file share service, was founded [1 McCormick]. In 1990’s when the music sales were at the peak, the total global music revenue was around $30 billion, but the one in 2012 was only $16.5 billion [2 Pfanner]. I did summer internship at Sony Music Entertainment in Tokyo for a month. I’ve participated in some meetings to consider marketing plans for musicians. One main reason of the sales declination is an illegal downloading. Although laws prohibit illegal downloading, there are still massive illegal downloading websites on the Internet. However, global music sales in 2012 increased for the first time since 1999, and the number of songs downloaded illegally was declined to 210 million in comparison to 1.2 billion in 2008. [3 Sherwin] It seems that music companies finally found some efficient ideas to overcome illegal downloaders. Do music companies actually increase their profits? And how did music companies start adjusting the situation? The purpose of the research paper is to figure out the main reasons why music sales finally increased, any differences to market music products and if the situation...

...Persuasive Research Paper Langston Hughes was a forerunner of rap music. He writes with a finesse that is a lot similar to a modern day rapper. Growing up during the Harlem Renaissance really set the stage for Langston Hughes writing. He also lived in a time where he African Americans were proud of their roots. Being around all the arts made him more inclined to write the way he did, with a rhythm. From Langston Hughes attitudes towards women, to writing about the streets he grew up on and his struggles, it is very evident that Langston Hughes was a forerunner of rap. Langston Hughes was lucky his hit his peak during the Harlem Renaissance because that gave him the opportunity to perform and publish his work in Black magazines. Langston Hughes mirrors rappers because he wrote his poetry simplistically, so people with no education could read and understand it. Langston Hughes wasn’t just a writer he was also a performer, he would regularly perform in nightclubs to gain exposure. I’m sure that if Langston Hughes were alive today he would be performing spoken word poetry in New York night clubs, or writing lyrics for today’s rappers. Langston Hughes was so drawn to the nightlife that he dropped out of school to travel and perform his poetry, just like a lot of modern rappers chasing their dreams. In the 1923 poem, “Jazzonia”, Langston Hughes sets the poem, “In a Harlem nightclub” (1140) , and is describing the jazz players inside it. Three years later, in “Lenox avenue: midnight”...

...discuss renaissance music, like Beethoven for classical music. However unlike in the case of Beethoven, there is not enough definite evidences to support the greatness of Josquin. The author Paula Higgins claimed this Josquin-movement has more political meaning beyond the musicological purpose in her article “The Apotheosis of Josquin des Prez and Other Mythologies of Musical Genius”. Higgins was obsessed with any possible conspiracy behind the Josquin apotheosis. Basically, she did not agree that Josquin is superior than every composer in Renaissance and she blamed Lowinsky for getting his own reputation by apotheosizing Josquin. After the Josquin-conference held in 1971, the genius character of Josquin has been established by Lowinsky and his colleagues, which Higgins found it was very sudden and abrupt, considering the...

...The Effect of Music on Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition This Document Originally Appeared in NATIONAL NETWORK FOR EARLY LANGUAGE LEARNING Volume 6, Number 3 Spring 1993 Suzanne L. Medina, Ph.D. School of Education Graduate Education Department California State University, Dominguez Hills 1000 East Victoria Street Carson, CA 90747 Fax: (310) 514-0396 E-mail: smedina@forefrontpublishers.com It is currently a common practice to use songs in the classroom to support second language acquisition. The literature abounds with positive statements concerning music as a vehicle for first and second language acquisition. At the same time, empirical support for music as a vehicle for second language acquisition is lacking and there is concern that music may be simply a supplemental activity with little instructional value. In this study, the effect of music on the acquisition of English vocabulary in a group of second grade limited-English proficient children is reported. Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In recent years, second language researchers have concerned themselves with the acquisition of vocabulary and have distinguished between vocabulary that is acquired incidentally and vocabulary that is acquired intentionally. During the preschool years, children rely exclusively on the oral language they listen to in order to acquire their first language. This acquisition of language takes place before children can read and without explicit instruction of any...

If it wasn’t, well – this entire article probably wouldn’t exist. This manual, however, can turn mandatory writing into an exciting venture! Instead of drudging through a lame history paper, make your history topic exciting. Have you ever thought of these following topics for a history paper? How did Neo-Nazism evolve in America? What was the role of African Americans during the Revolutionary War? How has United States censorship changed over the decades? Is the Civil Rights movement an ongoing occurrence? What was Britain’s view of India during British rule? What were the views on PTSD during different United States wars? What is the ongoing affect of the New Deal? What is the ongoing affect of the Civil Rights movement? What were the factors in the China-Tibet conflict? What were the little-know conservative U.S. movements? Any of them sound exciting? They should be! Research papers are trying, but they also have the ability to be very rewarding. Think about it. A simple psychology paper has the opportunity to be… All about the concept of sexuality. An insightful view into the medical uses of hypnotism. A study of the validity of positive thinking strategies. A look into the use of Pavlov’s conditioning in children. A study on the development of memory. A view of home life and its affect on child...

...Carel Bou Maroun Research Paper on Media ENG 203 – Layla Al Kadi Harmouch Introduction: Everywhere you go, you hear people talking about Media. Media is the plural of Medium. But what is a medium? A medium is a mean of mass communication. How can you communicate with a big number of people without what we call a medium, such as newspapers, television, or the Internet for example? Simply, you can’t. Media are elements that help to communicate messages. Any element. In a classroom for example, media are the walls, the board, and even the people inside it. The term mass communications alludes to any type of correspondence that at the same reaches a huge number of people, including yet not constrained to radio, TV, daily papers, magazines, bulletins, movies, record. (Wimmer and Dominick, 1983.) As we all know it, some media are more active and used than others today. For instance, we can think about televisions or mobile phones. But we all know that television is not the first technology used to spread messages. “Media are the result of technology.” (Avery and McCain, 1982.) Day by day, new technologies are emerging and the “old” ones are being forgotten. This is what our modern-day world looks like. It’s constantly changing, moving, evolving… The innovation and models for creating and conveying media substance are always advancing. (Croteau, David, Hoynes, and Milam, 2003.) Media are also socialization agents. You learn...

Author Note This research paper was done for Psychology 240, Section 4001, taught by Professor Mason MUSIC AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OVERALL INTELLECT Abstract A review of previous studies was conducted to test and measure the correlation of music and its influence on various levels of intellect. Subjects range in age from 9 to 67 and education from elementary school to undergraduate and beyond. Analysis included studies of subjects who listened to music and subjects that have varying levels of musical training. While some studies found significant results in some areas of cognition, intelligence and memory, they were inconsistent and concluded that further testing was needed. This review examines further the question of causation with music as a variable with a direct effect to a subject’s intellect as addressed by Schellenberg (2011). To understand if there is a direct relationship between music and intellect, further research of a subject’s background and mentality is required. !2 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
