...the Gavin Cato case of Yankel Rosenbaum’s murder. Anna Deveare Smith’s method of finding the truth in peoples stories lies in their syntax. The stutters and the “um’s” give the audience a better understanding of the character because in those stammers and pauses we, even for a moment, see some truth. Although it may help us understand where people are coming from, we still have no definite answer for why things ended up the way they did in Crown Heights. For example, in the monologue titled, Static, a Jewish woman says, “ I saw a little boy in the neighborhood, who I didn’t know and who didn’t know me—not Jewish, he was black and he wasn’t wearing a yarmulke because you can’t—“. The pauses in this particular monologue tell me that this woman is trying to watch what she says. In the times of hatred between Blacks and the Jewish, she did not want to slip up and so we often see her pausing to collect her thoughts or refer back to her story. This monologue does not necessarily help me reflect the truth about the riots in Crown Heights directly but I can not a clear example of stereotyping. The Blacks and the Jewish constantly have pre-determined judgments of the opposing race and we see this often throughout...

...seventy. Browning was an English poet who has become known as the person to invent and popularise the dramatic monologue. This made him the foremost Victorian poet; two of his most successful dramatic monologues are those of ‘My last Duchess’ and ‘Porphyria’s Lover’. The reoccurring theme within the two monologues is murder as they show the idea of men killing a lover Dramatic monologues are significant in that there is only one point of view expressed throughout. In Victorian times dramatic monologues were very popular; Browning was seen as the innovator of this style of writing along with other eminent Victorian poets such as Rossetti and Tennyson. The dramatic monologue takes its style from Shakespeare’s soliloquies were a character speaks their thoughts and feelings aloud. This idea and style has been extended to the preset day, with Alan Bennett’s ‘Talking Heads.’ The speaker in ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ is the lover himself, residing in a cottage in the countryside at the beginning of the poem. The mood of the narrator is established right at the start as he talks about “the sullen wind’ ‘tore,’ ‘vex’ and ‘spite.’ He is clearly angry and unhappy. However as soon as Porphyria ‘glided’ in, the mood changes and she ‘ shut the cold out and the storm.’ The narrator feels warmed by her presence. At once the reader sees that Porphyria has taken control, she starts the fire, she removes her outer clothing – which would definitely have been understood as provocative and sexual for...

I knew about the play from the Feminist Majority meetings and from Sierra Stein. After Take Back the Night on Wednesday, Adina Leshinsky talked to me about the play. We talked about the different roles and how that there are ones within my comfort level, and how easy the auditions are, you did not have to prepare anything for the audition. So to make a long story short, she basically persuaded me to try-out. So the next day at about 6:30 pm, I headed over to HMSU room 314 to audition. ...If blood is shed, then a negative light is shed upon the cause. “ It leaves society in a monologue rather than a dialogue,” (MLK, 1220). If nobody talks about the situation at hand, then how will it be resolved. On the other hand, sometimes peaceful protests go unnoticed and violence tends to get the attention. Malcolm X said “ it’s only fair to expect us to do whatever is necessary to protect ourselves,” sometimes that includes violence of some sort ( Cane, 1226). With violence comes the negative light, but it also produces fear and anxiety within a...

This shot is a particularly fine example of the expressive power of lighting. This clip is taken from the documentary Visions of Light. While the Clutters go about their daily business, running errands and baking cherry pies, Hickock and Smith are tuning their car. ...strange you're a fireman, it just doesn't seem right for you, somehow." Montag’s identity crisis begins during his conversations with Clarisse. We immediately sense conflict between his desire to be a dutiful member of society and his inner belief that something is wrong. 2)"I mean," he said, "in the old days, before homes were completely fireproofed–" Suddenly it seemed a much younger voice was speaking for him. He opened his mouth and it was Clarisse McClellan saying, "Didn't firemen prevent fires rather than stoke them up and get them going?" Montag escapes the guilt of betraying his duty by ascribing his actions to other things: in this case, to another person 3) The numbness will go away, he thought. It'll take time, but I'll do it, or Faber will do it for me. Someone somewhere will give me back the old face and the old hands the way they were. Even the smile, he thought, the old burnt-in smile, that's gone. I'm lost without it. Montag isn’t just talking about the numbness in his legs; he’s afraid of his new rebellious, fugitive self. 4) "All of those chemical balances and percentages on all of us here in the house are recorded in the master file downstairs. It would be easy for someone to set up a partial combination on the Hound's ‘memory,’ a touch of amino acids, perhaps. That would account for what the animal did just now. Reacted toward me." This is an interesting passage as it raises the question: how do we define identity and being? If it’s all...

...hear such an oration from the lips of a brown Filipino. And it seems to me that the whole monologue was said in great mediation that in my opinion has commanded the attention of those who came for the dinner. In the first few parts of the speech, Rizal described the surroundings with much romanticism like he is circled by “men of heart” and ” where noble emotions dwell” and “the air is full of empathetic good feeling.” At the time said, Philippines were under much oppression by the Spanish friars that is impossible to talk about it in public unless you would want to be branded as a filibuster. But in his speech, Rizal fearlessly exclaims the reason why they are gathered and that is to signify an achievement that had shed light into what has turned out to be a dark society as the painting itself portrays. He also gives praise to Hidalgo for illuminating the different ends of the globe and how high a respect he has for them. He claims change is coming as he used the metaphors such as the “illustrious achievements of (Philippines’) children are no longer consummated within the home.” This is a clear nod to the Filipino community in Madrid who organized the event. But most of all you will notice that he gives praise to the youth that fires much enthusiasm and how their actions have made a great difference and contributed to glory that is the Philippines. When he starts to talk about the Spolarium itself, Rizal takes us deep on the reality that the canvass “is not mute, can...

...find the 1st person narration (the text is partially narrative). The language of the extract is rather simple, the author used a lot of compound sentences and a lot of colloquial words that help the reader to feel the atmosphere in the cinema and the thoughts and inner condition of the main heroes. The whole story can be divided into 4 logical parts: 1st coming to the cinema, 2nd Rosa and Andrew begin to watch the comedy, 3rd the comedy itself, 4th Rosa’s and Andrew’s dialog. The plot structure of the extract is closed, because there are all elements. The exposition when the heroes come to the cinema, and their first impression from the atmosphere of the luxury. The story itself begins with talking of their sits and Rosa’s question about the film, there author uses a lot of details and descriptions, in order to show the atmosphere in show-room and Rosa’s and Andrew behavior and aims. Also there we can see Rosa’s attitude to Andrew, due to the phrase “… to be seen in the dress circle, even with Andrew”. The climax of the extract and the tensest moments we...

...so that we could see, smell and feel everything that surrounds the main characters. The text can be described as partially narrative and partially descriptive. The exposition is rather long. The author’s aim is to plunge us into the atmosphere of the luxurious salon: we can even hear the “soft whirring of fans” and “a cup grate on a saucer”, feel the “hot darkness” and draw a realistic image of the showing room. The complication begins with the Rosa’s question “This a comedy?” Now our attention is fully devoted to the leading characters, depicted skillfully by the author. Campbell Nairne reveals the nature of his characters through actions, details, dialogues, and, mostly, through showing their thoughts. He uses interior monologues to build up the thought patterns of both the main characters. The tension grows as we “hear” what Rosa thinks of Andrew, because her thoughts come in strong contradiction to his ones. The culmination takes place when Andrew breaks out, “forgetful in his excitement”. Full of delight, he wants to share his impressions with Rosa, but meets only cold misunderstanding. He starts making excuses to her, looking abject and miserable. The denouement lies in the sharp answer of Rosa. The elements of the plot are ordered chronologically, the story ends on the sour note, but the end of the story is not clear-cut and conclusive. It gives the reader much room for suggestion, forces him\her to fancy a possible reaction of the young...

First, in the time of need and despair because, when it comes to family some aren’t concern about the consequences of their actions all they know is that they are protecting the one that they love.
