Moose Flanagan is one of the 25 kids that live on Alcatraz Island. Moose is also counted on by many people, including his friends and other adults. As a result, many responsibilities are put upon Moose by his own family and others that live on Alcatraz. Moose is asked to help her sister, Natalie(Special Needs Kid), and keep an eye on her at all times, go help and talk to the warden’s daughter, Piper, when Piper’s mother is very sick and her dad, the warden, spends all the time at the hospital, and help get Mrs. Mattaman(Moose’s friend’s mom) get Theresa(Mrs. Mattaman’s daughter) out of bed after Theresa almost let her baby brother die and stayed there for two days straight.

Natalie is special in her own way. When Moose’s parents force him to watch Natalie when he is playing ball, or talking to his friends, Moose argues with his parents for days. Finally, he realizes that taking care of Natalie is actually his responsibility, and Moose takes initiative. He doesn’t complain about Natalie being there and even gives Natalie a turn in pitching or batting despite Natalie having no idea whatsoever of what’s going on. Mrs. Mattaman knew Moose was friends with almost all of the kids of the island, she could count on him. When Mrs. Mattaman Asked Moose to go talk to her because Moose is Piper’s “closest friend”, Moose doesn’t object and goes up to the warden’s house.
