1. Ideas/practices I will incorporate and why:
Through completing the course work and my field experience there are a lot of ideas and practices that I found beneficial and will incorporate in my own teaching career. The most important idea to me is to keep learning, and keep striving for a deeper understanding and appreciation of other genders, races, sexual groups, and cultures. I will attend every learning opportunity that discusses these intersections open and honestly, as they should be. I will familiarize myself with the work and accomplishments of all types of people, to develop a deeper understanding of others.
All of my students will be treated as individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, rather than grouping them by traits …show more content…
For this reason I will not tolerate prejudice on any level from anyone. All students should feel welcomed and advocated for. I plan to incorporate Multicultural social justice education into my teaching, as I think it can be extremely beneficial for students and our society as a whole. Teaching students to analyze the world around them helps to develop a passion for change, which we desperately need in this world. This will also ensure that the educational needs of diverse students, families, and communities are addressed. I will also teach the single group studies approach, as I believe teaching students about other cultures in a more involved way is important. Not only learning about the oppression of certain groups, but about their lives before the oppression, their goals, and achievements would beneficial for all students. When considering guest speakers, I will insure that students are exposed to a wide variety of speakers, including different genders, and races. I will be conscious of any bias I may have or may project to my students. All students will be treated the same in regards to praise and punishment. I will work to create a sense of community within my classroom where students learn to work together in positive ways. Students will often work in teams to build a sense of comradery. I will ensure these teams are diverse in terms of gender, race, culture and ability. I will also …show more content…
Ideas/practices I will not incorporate and why: There were not a lot of ideas or practices that I learned or witnessed during this course that I felt did not have a place in my classroom to some extent. Obviously witnessing prayer in the Christian private school that I observed, is not something I would or could incorporate in a public school classroom. However, I could still allow my students a moment of silence to use as they wish.
I cannot imagine myself teaching only using the exceptional of culturally different methods. These methods assume that the “normal” expectations for these students and our society is the end goal, which I do not feel is the case. Our society will need strong individuals and leaders prepared to enact necessary changes.
I noticed one of the teachers I observed using mescaline pronouns when referring to her students. Being raised partly in the North, “guys” is my ya’ll.” With that being said I will make a conscious effort to use appropriate pronouns when speaking to my students, as I want all of them to feel
