They are from two very different families who are bitter rivals, the Capulets and the Montagues. In the play, it shows and depicts the problems that arise when they fall in love, and how their impatience in important events leads to the downfall of their marriage in the end. Romeo and Juliet are to blame for all the misfortune experienced in this book, due to the impatience and stubbornness of each; Shakespeare created this to show how important patience is during crucial events. ...Romeo and Juliet - Luhrmann vs. Shakespeare It is a well known fact that when ever a movie is made based on a book or play, chances are, the literature will always be preferred. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is arguably one of the greatest tragic love stories ever written. The story of two teenagers who fall helplessly in love with each other but cannot be together on account of the their families rivalry. Many film adaptations of this timeless romance have been made, but one that stood out in particular was Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, which was released in 1996. This certain movie stood out so much since not only was set in a modern era, but still retained the original dialogue from the play. Daggers were replaced with guns, the prince with a cop. The twist of modernization wasn’t the only thing Luhrmann brought to the the table though, he also made some changes to the plot and characters. One change that I felt really added depth to Romeo’s “sensitive” side was when we are shown Romeo writing his feelings in a diary in the beginning of Act 5, Scene 1: In this scene Romeo is basically talking about how he dreams to see Juliet and how the very thought of her makes him so happy. In the original play he states, “Ah me! How sweet is love itself possessed, when but love’s shadows are so rich in joy!” (5.1.10-11). Deception and disguise: Let's see…Hermia and Lysander try to sneak away from Athens to elope (behind Egeus's back). Also, Titania and the young lovers have no idea they've been drugged by Oberon and his magic love juice. So, check. Mistaken identity: Check. Sort of. In most of Shakespeare's other comedies, someone usually runs around in a disguise to mask his or her identity. (Sometimes, a lover is even tricked into sleeping with the wrong person by mistake.) This isn't necessarily the case in A Midsummer Night's Dream, unless we count the fact that the love juice causes Titania to fall head over heels in love with an "ass." In other words, Titania mistakes Bottom for a creature who is worthy of her love and affection. The same can be said of the other lovers who are dosed with Oberon's magic love potion. ...MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Title As a title, Much Ado About Nothing fits neatly with those of Shakespeare’s other plays written around the same time: the titles seem whimsical and even flippant. Twelfth Night was alternatively titled What You Will, and As You Like It seems a much less informative title than, say, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Still, the capricious titles are actually as reflective of their content as any history or tragedy title. The plot of Much Ado About Nothing centers on a lot of hubbub over little misunderstandings; there’s a whole lot of fuss about stuff that ultimately isn’t that important. For the bigger issues in the play, though, we turn to the fact that, in Shakespeare’s day, "nothing" was often pronounced the same way as "noting." The play is built around the process of "noting," which has myriad meanings. It can mean "to take notice of" something, to eavesdrop, to observe, or to write something down – but these notings aren’t necessarily accurate. A person can misunderstand a meaning, or mishear, or misreport something, in the process of noting too. The foibles that result from noting (and misnoting) are central to keeping the play spinning. ...The Gift of the Magi Themes Love "Gift of the Magi" is the story of a poor, young couple whose love for each other is the most important thing in their lives. Such is their love that they're led to sacrifice their most valuable possessions to find Christmas gifts for each other. The warm home they make together contrasts with the drabness of their poverty and the dreary world outside. Their love seems to know no bounds, though Della (the wife) worries about how her sacrifice will affect her husband because of how it affects her looks. If ever there were a story with the message that all you need to be happy is love, this is it. Sacrifice The two main characters in "Gift of the Magi" are a husband and wife who give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford gifts for each other on Christmas Eve. The story seems to be all about sacrifice. We watch Della go through the process of deciding to make the sacrifice and going through with it, only to discover that her husband has made the same sacrifice. The story's narrator assures us that in their willingness to give up all they have, they have proven themselves the wisest of all gift-givers.
