I have a disability. Due to the unpredictable nature of my disability, I am unable to obtain part-time work. A scholarship would significantly help to alleviate the financial impact, and subsequently any associated stress, that impedes on my studies. I would use this scholarship to assist with the costs of living and educational expenses. This would allow me to focus on my university studies, to achieve to my highest potential.

Sporting activities
Due to the unpredictable nature of my disability, it has made it difficult in recent times to participate in sporting activities. However, when I was at secondary school I actively participated in school sporting teams including netball, tennis, cricket, cross-country, table tennis, and athletics

Personal Narrative: Generalized Anxiety Disorder

...Bravery is the willingness to confront anger, pain, danger, and uncertainty. I was diagnosed with ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder, and autism spectrum disorder when I was in my senior year of high school. My stepmother noticed that I was struggling in school and noticed the warning signs years earlier. The idea of me being tested was mentioned numerous times, but life got in the way and it was put to the side. The testing was started beginning of my senior year, because it was the year that determined where I would go after graduation. The diagnosis was scary, because I worried about how future colleges and employers would look at me, because I had a disability on my application. In the beginning it was difficult for me to tell my college professors that I had a disability, because I feared they would treat me differently. My university has a disability center which offers supports to students with disabilities. My first semester in college was rough and I didn’t take the opportunity to use all the resources afforded to me. I also wasn’t taking my medication on a consistent basis, because I was stubborn and in denial. It was very difficult time for me, because I received numerous scholarships and was worried that I could lose them due to my grade. Thankfully I was able...

Essay Scholarship

...awarded the NOYCE Scholarship would be of great assistance in achieving my dreams not only economically, but professionally as well. My goal is to teach math to the young adults in our local high schools. The scholarship would play an important part in my education by providing me with experience, knowledge and opportunities to improve myself as a teacher. My dream of becoming a teacher dates back to the days when I was a child. At school, I have always been the student who explains math to her classmates. Doing this is something that I have always enjoyed. Those experiences motivated me to pursue a career in education. Similarly, when I worked as a crew leader at McDonald’s, I taught the new employees how to perform the job. This helped to increase my desire to teach professionally. Later when I started working as a math and physics tutor at the Center for Students with Disabilities at El Paso Community College, I confirmed that teaching is something that I love to do and that I did not make a mistake when selecting my career. I obtained tremendous satisfaction in the difference my teaching made to the scholastic success of the students I tutored. In addition, I am interested in teaching as a career because I believe that as a teacher I will have the opportunity to make an impact on society. As a math teacher I will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinkers of the future. I will develop individuals who can analyze and find solutions to problems. It is my belief that if...

Personal Narrative: My Legacy

...Legacy Scholarship Essay My time at the schools of McKeel Academy overall was a pleasant experience since I was actually enabled to learn and do so with relative ease. However, a certain issue that I ran into at a young age could have changed my experience drastically. When I was in third grade, I began to develop excruciatingly painful headaches that resulted in me going home from school early on many occasions. While my teacher recommended me to a neurologist, my mother decided to take me to an ophthalmologist instead. After several examinations, it was concluded that I had what was called convergence insufficiency, which means that if I read too much at one time that I would begin to have severe headaches. Due to this condition,...

... ! ! 1. How did you find out if you were eligible for special education in your public middle school when you were younger? ! My mom had asked the school to evaluate me, so she called or wrote the director of special education, even the principal of my school and had to describe the concerns that she had with the my academic performance and she even requested an evaluation under IDEA, to see if a disability was even involved in the first place just to make sure. My public school was concerned about how I was learning and developing. Since the school and my mother thought I had a the disability, they evaluated me but the best part about it for my mother was that it didn't cost me anything to check. They asked my mom for her written consent before they had evaluated me. Just because my mom had asked didn't mean they had to do it. They could have said no, but they would have had to explain to my mother why they wouldn't want to do so. ! 2. What would have happened if you were not eligible for special education in your public school , how would you have felt ? ! If the public school would have came up with the conclusion that i was not eligible for special education, the school system would have gave me that reasoning as to why I wasn't found “eligible.” At first that did happen but under IDEA, and they gave my mother the information as to what she can do to basically since she disagreed with the decision they had made. Either way no one wants to...

Co-Teaching

...RUNNING HEAD: C0-TEACHING Co-Teaching Perspective Gregory D. Lee Concordia University I love teaching when the learning in my classroom is palpable: When I can sense it in the quickening pace of a roundtable discussion or a student’s visible delight in using newly learned jargon; when I can hear the excitement in students’ testimonials about mastering skills that “made a difference” or theories that transformed practices and perspectives. I count these as teaching successes and make it a habit to reflect on their origins so that I can recreate the conditions for their occurrence again and again. My philosophy of teaching is informed by the material I teach, relevant scholarship, and the lessons I have learned from personal teaching successes and failures and more successful through co-teaching. Co-teaching is where two or more teachers work together to plan, set up and deliver the curriculum to a group of students. For use with Inclusive Classrooms co-teaching is often the practice of pairing a special educator with a regular educator in a single classroom. As educators strive increasingly to include students with disabilities in the classroom, the need for regular educators to have greater expertise with students of special needs increases as well. An extra teacher in the classroom also helps to lower the student-to-teacher ratio. This means that there is more individual attention given to each student. I believe that learner-oriented teaching promotes learning...

Desert Flowers

...through miles of isolation cannot believe their eyes when they arrive upon this amazing anomaly of life and fertility. Much like these inspiring creatures, my origins could be described by some as dismal, maybe even stifling. Being the daughter of a mother and father who grew up in poverty, I lost my father to H.I.V. and my mother and I overcame various obstacles throughout my life, including living with domestic violence, sexual abuse, unstable housing and other trials that made it difficult to look forward to a positive future. As a child, I was never sure where to turn to for inspiration and I struggled to meet expectations in school. Subsequently, I was diagnosed with a learning disability in reading and writing, and it became increasingly hard for me to believe in myself, without many personal successes to draw from. But even in the arid desert some flowers still survive, and through the encouragement of my grandparents and reading teacher, I pressed on, and by late elementary school I was able to overcome these challenges begin feeling my first life successes through school. I felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride through my achievements in school, and it seemed to be the only variable in my life that I could control. So I thrust my energies into achieving in education and ended up becoming the first on one side of my family to graduate from high school, (graduating early in just three years), and one of the first on both...

Personal Narrative: A Career In Social Work

...My career goals are to have a decent-paying job and to be happy working at that job. I’m currently going into college as Undeclared so I can keep my options open. However, I’m seriously considering majoring in Social Work. If I do decide to major in Social Work, then I intend to get my Masters’ degree and have a job that has something to do with either the foster care system, adoption, or domestic abuse prevention. I should receive this scholarship because I have beaten the odds. When I was born, I weighed only one pound and nine ounces. I was so tiny that I could fit into doll clothes and people could hold me in the palm of their hand. I was born three months early. My lungs were underdeveloped and I had a weakened immune system. I stayed in the NICU for two months. I use to be considered disabled because I was delayed in my speech....
