...Vincent Marziano MUS 361U Dr. Bluestone 5/16/2013 841 words #20 Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited Can words describe the amount of sound that came out the speakers after playing Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited? The many sounds that make up this remarkable piece of what one could only describe as artwork is a phenomenal mix of instruments and vocals to produce a sound that is of no other. Dylan combines everything from a simple harmonica (which he makes sound anything but simple) all the way up to electric guitars, drums, acoustics, tambourines, banjos and even what sounds to be like a Kazoo in track 7! His background falls under influences coming from the blues with an emphasis on delta blues, and a strong country back ground as well. He ties these older sounds together with the new sounds of today’s rock and roll to create even flowing and cohesive piece of work. His music is made for the youth and even in a time when folk and country music is something we would relate to our parents, his music brings out a young vibrantness that no person, old or young, could ignore. His overall CD encompasses many mixed emotions. Dylan seems to incorporate personal stories of his own life along with random stories which when combined produce songs of happiness as well as desperation to the modern world. His CD doesn’t carry a main story line, and in fact really sounds like a mix of random feelings and emotions that he kind of slapped together into one cohesive motion. His first...

...It's amazing what the human mind thinks its body can do. We've all had those day dreams of being the hero, saving the day or whatnot. But when it comes down to it? We are all cowards. Now, I'm not saying that there aren't true heroes out there, people who do fantastic things. But for the most part, us as human beings…well, we're a cowardous race! Take me, for an example. Right now, I am standing in the middle of a highway, at midnight. There are cars all around me…and I can't move a muscle! When I was held captive, I thought I could just run across to get to Safety! I thought I would parkour over a couple of cars, and sprint away! But here I am, thinking my last thoughts… You know, it has to be the weirdest feeling. The cars must be racing...

...that around 113 countries around the world are trying to get the economical stability of the developed countries, these are called developing countries. There are many reasons why just less than the half of the countries are considered developed, one of them and to my criteria the most important is their government; is the one that manage all the different issues of the country, such as economic, social and diplomatic issues. With a good management of the country by the government the develop is clear, the problem comes when there is a wrong management of the funds for investment. But on the other hand if there is a proper management of the funds, the best way to raise the economy in a relatively short time is to invest in civil works. In my research paper I’m going to talk about why civil works are the best way to reach the development, I’m going to explain how and when to do each different civil work of infrastructure such as highways, water dams and many other that will contribute a lot to improve the quality life of the population, which at the same time will increase the income of the overall economy of the country. Also another essential part of the development is the happiness of the people; the happiness of the people has a direct relation with their income, because if the people are happy, they will work in a better mood, which means also that the people are going to be more productive in their works, which at the same time is going to help to the income of the...

...material possessions and there monetary value. True success has nothing to do with material possessions, but comes from a deeper place that is much more substantial than money. When I was younger my father and I would take long rides on his truck every weekend. On these long drives we traveled from state to state and would have many in-depth conversations on success. One time in particular, I remember we were driving along the highway and I saw a 2003 Cadillac Escalade. When I was younger this was my favorite vehicle and I told my Father when I got older I was going to purchase one. My father told me that in order for me to purchase one of them when I got older I would have to be successful. So, I asked, “What does that mean?” He replied with, “You have to go to college and work hard and get a good job.” Looking back at the conversation, my father related success with money as many people do. I thought it was funny that his idea of success did not correlate with my thought of the word. I always thought success had to do with how you thought of yourself and not how other people looked at you. For many people they measure success on their happiness and how interesting they can make life. Few people find happiness in material possessions, but the majority of us do not. Many find happiness in their families: husband, wife, children, etc. Others measure their success on how happy they can make other people. For example,...

...to do something because it will produce more total happiness than doing anything else would. Act utilitarianism (AU) is the moral theory that holds that the morally right action, the act that we have a moral duty to do, is the one that will (probably) maximize “utility” (happiness, welfare, well-being). AU is not to be confused with egoism. The egoist really only cares about his own happiness. AU says that everyone’s happiness counts equally. Suppose that executing Joseph would in the long run produce more total happiness than letting him live would. Then according to AU, we ought to execute Joseph. Now if Joseph is a convicted serial murderer who would probably escape and commit more murders if we tried to incarcerate him, then it’s reasonable to think that executing him would be the right thing to do. But what if he has committed no crime? What if he is simply an extremely irritating person with no friends or loved ones, and the many people with whom he has contact in his life are very sensitive and dislike him intensely? Since more total happiness is produced if Joseph dies (the increased happiness of the many who no longer have to endure him outweighs his unhappiness about dying) than if he lives, AU says that it’s right to kill him. This example illustrates what is probably the main objection to AU: it tells us to violate rights/commit injustices when doing so is necessary to produce the greatest total amount of happiness. A “utilitarian” argument in a looser sense is one...

...University HU300: Art and Humanities: 20th Century and Beyond Professor Murray November 12, 2011 Happiness, Sadness, Energetic, Revengeful, and Rebelliousness are just a few of the feelings that music can create. Music within my life has made a full circle. My childhood was filled with old country classics. As I began to grow into my teenage years, I experienced a different sort of music which included, but was not limited to, rock and rap. Now, as an adult, I place all of the music that I have listened to over the years into my own album with the addition of a few. There are some songs that I have listened to, that no matter what mood I am in bring comfort and joy. Others that I listen to make me want to get up and do something. Music can fulfill a lifetime of stories into one word. My childhood was like that of many Caucasian males in the early eighties. My dad played the guitar while we sat around and sang the old country classics from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. I still stand by this music today. The lyrics during this time told stories, many of heartache and pain, but nonetheless true and solid stories. At the time I was just singing them with everyone else but as time grew on I started to really pay attention to what was being said. I have taken many of these stories with me through the years. One of my favorites that still sit with me today is Lost Highway by Hank Williams Sr. It speaks of a man who soul is lost and when I would get in harrowing situations I...

...2010, I had no idea it would be a day that would change my life forever. I thought it was just a normal start to a typical Wednesday. The smell of summer was in the air and the dew was still sparkling on the individual blades of grass. The other true sign that summer had arrived was my bike. Since I started riding ten years ago, motorcycles have been more than a means of transportation. They are a source of fun, entertainment, and happiness. Nothing is more liberating than feeling the wind passing over my body as I cruise down an open highway. On this morning, like many other summer mornings, I jumped on my brand new, baby blue Honda chopper to ride to my daughter’s swimming lesson. Little did I know, the cinnamon flavored gum I was chewing would be the last thing I would taste, minus blood, for quite some time. As I approached the road construction on I 35-W, the smell of freshly poured asphalt stung my nostrils like salt. The arrangement of the brightly colored orange construction cones had traffic dancing from lane to lane to keep the passing vehicles away from the workers. Through one of these lane changes a storm drain came upon me like a point blank, line drive shot in a game of dodge ball. I had no time to react and I flew through the air like a dog bone, end over end. The impact of the crash launched me about 25 yards into the ditch on I 35-W and County Road I. My bike was nowhere to be found. I landed sideways on my right ankle, shattering it. I still have a scar from...

...21st, to afford a propitious soul with a better understanding how life was 100 years prior to what it might be when this letter can be read. As you read this, I will illustrate my personal daily tasks as they exist now, discuss current morale and decision-making, my definition of happiness, Langston Hughes’ Mother to Son, the architect – Aguas de Barcelona, Human by Brandy, the movie John Q, and the significance of airbags in automobiles. Concluding this time capsule, you will have learned more on how we lived in the late 20th and early 21st Centuries and possibly how some of our inventions may help to inspire some future inventions. Due to the recent economic crisis, America is experiencing a recession that is slow to recover. Because of the recession, the jobless rate has reached a 10.1 percent high (Chandra, 2011). I unfortunately am one of those workers whom were laid off. Therefore, I am taking this time now to focus on attending school full-time and getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. I currently receive unemployment which means that my income has been reduced almost to half as when I was working. With my faith and trust in God I have been able to sustain my lifestyle with some minor adjustments to my spending habits. Now that I am on a more restricted income, my daily tasks include only things I need to do in order to control...

...The literary work that captured my interest was “The Welcome Place” by Alice Walker. This fictitious work captured my interest with the lyrical musical expression and tone in the beginning of the short story. This writing also has a symbolic meaning for the African American culture. It describes the fight for freedom and cultural equality. “The Welcome Place” is written about the slavery time period and how African Americans were treated. According to Clugston, 2010, “The point of view is called "omniscient" when the story is being told by someone who is not a character but knows the thoughts and feelings of the characters in the story. The omniscient technique is used in this story and is particularly effective in allowing the reader to understand the old woman's predicament and how she, and the others, dealt with it.” (sec.3.1) This short story pulls the reader in, engages them and allows them to imagine themselves at the church. The story captured my imagination, drawing me into the slavery time period. It was curiosity and emotion that drew me into the character. It provided me with a desire to escape a present association. This literary piece motivated me to continue to understand the heartache, pain and torment African American slaves endured. The connections I make to the characters are to change how the elderly and seniors are cared for, thought of and treated by society in general. Additional comparisons are made to current ambiguous societal racial tendencies. The...

...wake up. Exhaustedly, I grab my things to take into the cramped bathroom we all had to share. There were only four showers to share between about fifty girls. I wait in line for everything, food, and showers, even the bathroom. Each day we eat the same thing; rice for breakfast, rice for lunch, and rice for dinner, which was good only for about the first twenty times I ate it. But a smile is plastered on my face and I’m ready to go out and do some honest work. We’re in Costa Rica. I’m only there for about a week with my Youth group on a retreat to Pura Vida Missions. We are there with another large church, which means there were about one hundred people in one building, give or take. We’re about to head out onto the job site for the first time and my excitement was obvious to everyone around me. I couldn’t wait to meet the family we were going to be working for. Were they nice? What stories will they have to share?...

...JOB HISTORY Introduction Can you illustrate the life of a human being, simply through their job history? If you’ve read Annie Proulx’s short story ‘Job History’, then I’m sure that you have no doubt in your mind - yes, you can. But after concluding this, more questions spring to mind: ‘What if I hate my job - do I then also lead a life without happiness?’; ‘If my job is a reflection of my life quality, should I change my priorities and acknowledge that money is the most important thing in the world?’; ‘Am I working because I like my job, or because I like my monthly wage?’. Narration is interesting in this short story. It is unusual in its form, due to the life story being told in fragments; almost as if we were reading a curriculum vitae, we are presented with jobs and major events and accomplishments inexhaustibly: ‘He takes a job pumping gas...’, ‘Leeland joins the army,...’, ‘He works with a snow-fence crew...’, ‘...he drives oil trucks.’, ‘They set up in business for themselves.’. That was quoted from approximately one single page. Another interesting detail concerns the occasional reference to news. What is interesting about it, is that it is included with the job descriptions in the beginning, but fade out and in the end ‘Nobody has time to listen to the news.’. It seems to me as if the news are important and attractive in the beginning, where the main character just takes whatever job he can, but bleaks and loses relevance when he finally, accidentally breaks...

...should be proud of. But divorce in the Philippines is planning to take over Filipino values and culture. Some people are now preparing for a controversial bill which will open a highway for immorality and degradation of Philippine culture and religious standards and beliefs. It is not what God wants. God did not make man and woman to be united and then separated if they got into some problems. If you fear the Lord and his commands, there is no way that you will agree on divorce. It is not the answer to the growing violence against women and children. Most divorce advocates give emphasis on the growing children and women abuse. But I really do not see it as a solution for these problems. In fact it extends to the growing problem of immorality and sexually related diseases and problems such as unwanted pregnancies and abortion. And I believe that you will agree with me that these problems are a threat to women, children and even family. It is not true that you will be happy with second chance. It is not true that you will gain your happiness back when your marriage fail and divorce is the solution. The only solution for marital problems is to adhere what the word of God says…. “Wives, submit to your husbands. Husbands, love your wife as you love yourselves…” (Ephesians 5:22-33). This is where you gain happiness and fullness of marital life and your...

...2010). When discussing the topic of euthanasia this has been deemed an ethical issue because it deals with moral principles, which is different for each individual. Opp Side Supp Side Euthanasia is a topic that brings about much debate, but when it comes to an individual’s life they should have a legal right to choose what is best for them. Many in opposition of euthanasia go along with the view that it is wrong for a person to end their life and that it is right to have laws that prohibit such actions. But the question that arises is if this legal course gives a person the right that was granted to them in the Declaration of Independence, each individual having the right to the pursuit of happiness. This being the case each individual has the right to choose the course that they believe wills be the best for them and if the government controls this individuals no longer have the right but instead they have to be granted permission. So there is no freedom of choice it is left up to...

...Childhood Place I knew it was going to be an early morning, dad told me so. I had to be up, ready to go and in the truck by 4 am. Even at this age I am not a morning person. It was still dark out when the three of us, mom, dad and me started down the highway. It would be about two hours until we arrived at our destination. I put my headphones on, and pushed play on my walkman. I woke up to mom shaking me and saying “we’re here”! It was light out, I sat up and looked around. The parking lot was full of trucks and trailers just like ours. We quickly found the registration desk and dad was given all the necessary information. We walked back to the truck; it was already warming up, not a cloud in the sky. It was going to be a hot summer day in the west! The event officially starts around 10am, but there is so much preparation involved beforehand. Dad says everything has to be “perfect”. All I remember about this prepping time is being extremely bored. I’m not allowed to wander off, get in the way, or touch anything! The best part of these day/events is listening to my dad. Even though I am young and not even sure what exactly he is talking about, I can tell he is smart and sought out. So many questions are asked of him. It seems he always has an answer. People are pointing at this and that and admiring. I don’t get what the big deal is, but it’s important to these people. He seems so happy on these days, but at the same time stressed out with all the prepping...
