Australia's Relationship with Indonesia

...different sources, I have concluded that the relationship is balanced in a sense that it displays both positive and negative aspects. When discussing military relations, overall, negative impacts from the East Timor war have left the Indonesian- Australian relationship with tension and uncertainties that remain until this day. In relation to political connections, most aspects of the government relationships are positive, despite a few minor cases that dislodge the strong bond. On the other hand, the booming tourism industry reflects positive aspects of the Indonesian- Australian relationship. After the Japanese Attacks on Australia in World War II, Australia recognised its vulnerable geographical position and sought a relationship with the islands to the immediate north (Indonesia) to form a strong defence strategy. However, this military alliance has had a negative impact on Indonesia’s and Australia’s relationship. Specifically referring to the East- Timor war, a series of negative events strained the relationship between the two nations. The first of these events, being the killings of 5 Australian journalists when they had been reporting on the East Timor war in Balibo. Recent evidence has proved that these killings were a deliberate act of execution at the hand of Indonesian officials. According to lawyer George Brownbill, who said he saw a telexed intelligence report, marked Top Secret, of intercepted radio traffic between an officer commanding Indonesian forces in East Timor...

Greertz

...“Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight” Clifford Geertz Reprinted from The Interpretation of Cultures The Raid Early in April of 1958, my wife and I arrived, malarial and diffident, in a Balinese village we intended, as anthropologists, to study. A small place, about five hundred people, and relatively remote, it was its own world. We were intruders, professional ones, and the villagers dealt with us as Balinese seem always to deal with people not part of their life who yet press themselves upon them: as though we were not there. For them, and to a degree for ourselves, we were nonpersons, specters, invisible men. almost as satisfactory. If we ventured to approach someone (something one is powerfully inhibited from doing in such an atmosphere), he moved, negligently but definitively, away. If, seated or leaning against a wall, we had him trapped, he said nothing at all, or mumbled what for the Balinese is the ultimate nonword-"yes." The indifference, of course, was studied; the villagers were watching every move we made and they had an enormous amount of quite accurate information about who we were and what we were going to be doing. But they acted as if we simply did not exist, which, in fact, as this behavior was designed to inform us, we did not, or anyway not yet. cockfighting as "primitive," "backward," "unprogressive," and generally unbecoming an ambitious nation. And, as with those other embarrassments -opium smoking, begging, or uncovered breasts-it seeks...

...ASIAN JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT CASES, 3(1), 2006 SAGE PUBLICATIONS NEW DELHI/THOUSAND OAKS/LONDON DOI: 10.1177/097282010500300104 AIRASIA: THE SKY’S THE LIMIT Rizal Ahmad Mark Neal This case details the rise and expansion of AirAsia in South-east Asia. The company employed a business model for low-cost airlines that was originally developed by Southwest Airlines in the United States and subsequently employed with great success by European companies such as Ryanair and EasyJet. The case thus documents the successful application of a western business model in a previously unexploited Asian environment, and raises issues about knowledge transfer, and the sustainability of such a model in the face of increasing competition and market turbulence. In this way, this case raises issues of innovation, adaptation, strategy and sustainability within the Asian context. Keywords: Low-cost airlines, Budget airlines, Business model, Knowledge transfer, Innovation, Asian entrepreneurship ‘Now everyone can fly’—AirAsia had been drumming South-east Asians to take to the skies by making air travel affordable to the masses. In October 2004, AirAsia successfully attracted over USD 200 million in fresh capital through an Initial Public Offer (IPO) of its shares.1 In December 2004, it announced its decision to purchase up to eighty Airbus A320s (Defence-aerospace 2005). Arguably, AirAsia not only enabled many ordinary people to travel by air, but also stirred up competition and encouraged the formation...

The lowlands’ mild climate and grasslands are favorable for farming and ranching. There are several cities and industries which are advantageous for work; Lowlanders have a higher socioeconomic status. Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands, but only about 6,000 are inhabited; the majority of the population lives on one of five main islands. Like Scotland, there are more opportunities for income in urban areas. The socioeconomic status of citizens in rural districts and on remote islands is lower; rice and tobacco farming are their main means of support. The main language spoken in Scotland is English, but the accent is very thick and hard for outsiders to understand. I interviewed K. Gow, a Canadian citizen, and through written questions, I interviewed her mother, E. Gow, who relocated from Scotland to Canada several years ago. K. Gow said, “You wouldn’t be able to understand my mum” (personal communication, July 29, 2012), and offered to interpret. E. Gow explained the roles of Scottish family members: men are the head of the household and make decisions regarding money, women take care of the home, husband, and children, and make most of the decisions regarding healthcare, and grandparents are to be respected and cared for. Health is defined as coming from “good stock,” meaning good genes...

Banyan Tree

...HKU774 CATHY ENZ ALI FARHOOMAND BANYAN TREE: SUSTAINABILITY OF A BRAND DURING RAPID GLOBAL EXPANSION Within the next five years, if we play our expansion card right and we manage our growth properly, we have a reasonable, credible opportunity to become one of the top two or three dominant players in a global space which is very niche but nevertheless very global. - K.P. Ho, CEO of Banyan Tree Holdings Limited1 On 14 August 2006, exactly two months after its initial public offering (“IPO”), Banyan Tree Holdings Limited announced second-quarter results for the period ending on 30 June. Revenue had more than doubled to S$71.42 million, largely due to recovery following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The company felt that this was only the beginning, however, and had earmarked part of the IPO proceeds to finance an ambitious expansion plan. At the core of its business development plan was a proposal to open 21 new resorts3 over four years that would span non-Asian territories from Greece to Mexico. Banyan Tree CEO Ho Kwon Ping’s vision was to “string a necklace [of Banyan Tree properties] around the world”. The Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, the SARS crisis of 2003 and the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 had taken their toll on the travel and tourism industry [see Exhibit 1]. Although recovery was on the horizon, Ho understood the need to diversify risks across geographical regions and the IPO provided the finances to venture out of familiar territory. Two...

The strong revenue growth was largely attributable to higher income from The Met condominium development in Thailand as well as stronger contributions from the Group’s hotels & resorts in Singapore, the Maldives and Bali. Consequently, the Group’s profit before income tax and fair value adjustments to investment properties increased by 28.2% to $94.3 million from $73.5 million last year. Group borrowings increased, mainly due to further contributions towards the Group’s 22.5% share of the remaining acquisition cost for the Farrer Court site, as well as payment of development expenditure for The Met condominium in Thailand. This resulted in corresponding increases in investment in associates and development properties. Trade receivables also increased, mainly due to recognition of income from The Met condominium in Thailand. Nevertheless, finance costs decreased by 15.5% from $40.1 million last year to $33.8 million for the year under review, due to lower...
