...resolving complex problems, particularly if the aggressor is the hero” (Facts and TV Statistics, 2011). Batman and Robin, for instance, use crime and violence to stop Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from taking over Gotham City. The children watching are dressing up at Halloween to pretend to be a villain. Who is to say that children are trying to reenact the Hero’s? Children approximately spend four hours a day watching television. Children are spending more time watching television than doing any other activity. According to research, violence on TV has influenced children to become more violent, but who is responsible? Eli Routh, director of Hostel says, “Kids that age have seen enough TV and real-life violence by then that they understand the difference.” Eli Routh is an actor and is out to make money. Children do not know the difference unless the authorities teach them the difference. Child development is the most important part of a child’s life. “The first two years of life are considered a critical time for brain development”. (The Nemours Foundation, 2011). The four hours of television that was indicated in the above paragraph does not include other activities on a screen. Children also use computers and videos or DVDs not included in the four hours. Different studies have shown that TV can cause obesity, alcohol use, drug abuse, smoking, and aggressive behaviors (Regents of the University of Michigan, 2011). ...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: From the very beginning of automobile industry, product and branding strategies are considered as one of the major functions performed by the manufacturers. What is interesting that, with the passage of time, its importance is increasing significantly. Even though the voyage of automobile commenced in 1335 by Guido da Vigevano, in true sense there was not any considerable development until 1885, when Karl Benz invented the first practical automobile. Since then the automobile industry has gone a long way consisting of a number of renowned companies. In this industry, the core product is transportation and communication facility backed by actual and augmented product. Product line decision involves Line stretching and Line filling. In this industry, Mercedes-Benz lengthens its product line by using both line stretching and line filling. Since the early branding era, the branding strategies have changed throughout the time. Branding is, now-a-days, influencing the consumer buying behavior to a greater extent. As such manufacturers are now concentrating more on brand placement rather than product placement. They are developing brand loyalty in the minds of their customers in order to achieve high retention rate. Automobile companies can build up both product and corporate brand, but the recent trend is towards emphasizing on corporate branding. Previously it was thought that Branding is necessary from the sellers point of view to differentiate own products,...

...Alan Mulally, who was hired as CEO of Ford in September 2006, had not engineered, designed, or built any cars. He came from Boeing. After joining Ford, he devised a plan that identified specific goals for the company, created a process that moved it toward those goals, and installed a management system to make sure the company reaches those goals. Mulally demands weekly, sometimes daily, updates. “Alan's style is pretty relentless,” says chief financial officer Lewis Booth, a 31-year Ford veteran. “He says, ‘If this is the reality, what are we going to do about it?' not ‘We're going to work our way through it.'” Mulally's leadership has resulted in Ford making some strategic moves. When Mulally arrived in September 2006, Ford was known mainly for its pickup trucks and the Mustang. The company was on the verge of financial collapse. It lost $12.6 billion in 2006 and another $2.7 billion in 2007. Sensing a recession in 2006, Mulally decided to borrow $23 billion against Ford's assets. Taking on more debt wasn't easy, but the extra cash meant that Ford could say no to government loans when sales declined in 2008 and 2009. He wants Ford to maintain its independence. Mulally is moving to integrate the company globally, despite several failed attempts in the past. In 2010, Ford will be selling small cars (e.g., Fiesta and Focus) in the United States that were developed in Europe. Mulally persuaded Bill Ford to sell off Jaguar and Land Rover and focus its resources on the Ford...

...Leadership Styles and Their Consequences D. D. Warrick University of Colorado This article discusses leadership style theories and offers an integration of the theories by describing the typical characteristics, philpsophy, skills, and consequences associated with each major style. Then an experimental exercise is offered that portrays the major styles and the productivity and satisfaction each i s likely to produce. Finally, a debriefing is presented that helps interpret the exercise and integrate the style theories with contingency theory. Importance of Leadership Style Few leaders understand the full significance of how influential their leadership style is on the performance and satisfaction of their employees. Leaders control both interpersonal and material rewards and punishments that often shape employee behavior and influence an employee’s performance, motivation, and attitude. They can affect an employee’s self-image and resulting potential in either a positive or negative way by being supportive, fair, and encouraging, or unsupportive, inconsistent, and critical. In addition, they can even affect an employee’s health and energy level by creating a stimulating work climate or one filled with tension and fear. The influence of a leader’s style reaches greater proportions as the effects on individuals begin to have a cumulative effect on group performance. There are no doubt variables other than a leader’s style that affect employee performance and satisfaction...

Would you believe that one software tester comes to work every day dressed in extravagant Victorian outfits? But the underlying theme that unites Microsofties is the belief that the firm has a manifest destiny to change the world. The least consequential decision by a programmer can have an outsized importance when it can effect a new release that might be used by 50 million people. Microsoft employees are famous for putting in long hours. One program manager said, “In my first five years, I was the Microsoft stereotype. ...A TEACHER’S GUIDE TO THE SIGNET CLASSIC EDITION OF BOOKER T. WASHINGTON’S UP FROM SLAVERY By VIRGINIA L. SHEPHARD, Ph.D., Florida State University S E R I E S E D I T O R S : W. GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery 2 INTRODUCTION Booker T. Washington’s commanding presence and oratory deeply moved his contemporaries. His writings continue to influence readers today. Although Washington claimed his autobiography was “a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment,” readers for nearly a century have found it richly rewarding. Today, Up From Slavery appeals to a wide audience from early adolescence through adulthood. More important, however, is the inspiration his story of hard work and positive goals gives to all readers. His life is an example providing hope to all. The complexity and contradictions of his life make his autobiography intellectually intriguing for advanced readers. To some he was known as the Sage of Tuskegee or the Black Moses. One of his prominent biographers, Louis R. Harlan, called him the “Wizard of the Tuskegee Machine.” Others acknowledged him to be a complicated person and public figure. Students of American social and political history have come to see that Washington lived a double life. Publicly he appeased the white establishment...

...with violence take heat from adults who blame | | |them for real life violence because they are closer to reality | | |than other movies." | | "The question whether movie violence should be regulated or not is a difficult and complicated matter." Although many people criticize violent movies, if there is a movie which does not contain sex and violence, who will go to see that movie? Most major movies, such as "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard", and "Independence Day", were really popular in spite of the fact that the "good guy" killed more people than the "bad guy" did. In my opinion, Hollywood tends to produce few kinds of movies--action, panic, love story, and comedy. Whenever I watch a movie or a video, there is at least one murder in each movie. The biggest number of deaths are in the panic movies, in my opinion. Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame them for real life violence because they are closer to reality than other movies. For example, in "Natural Born Killers" we can see around 50 deaths, whereas in "Independence Day" thousands of people die. In both movies, tons of people are killed, though the ways to kill are different. The big difference between them is about reality. |[pic] | |PHOTO BY THOMAS PETERS | |"Although many people criticize violent movies, if there is | |a movie which does not contain...
