...myself very fortunate to travel and visit historic places and museums, and at the same time serving my country and the Air Force, one of the finest military organizations in the world. In my own unique experience, I visited a country that I thought I would never dream to visit if not for my career in the US military. The temporary assignment to Incirlik base in Turkey, the bus ride, the visit to the birthplace of Saint Paul the Apostle and a Muslim tour guide to the city of Tarsus, was one of the most memorable trips in my life. Temporary duty to Turkey I love to travel, and visited many different countries, but this particular trip a temporary duty to Incirlik air base in Turkey, without my family was a very unique experience for me. This trip was so memorable that I constantly think about it and share this experience to my friends and family every time I have the opportunity. What is so unique about this trip is that, as an American and a Christian, I am visiting a Muslim country that has a long history of Christianity. Numerous Christian Apostles and Saints were born in Turkey, but in this particular trip, I was interested in visiting the city of Tarsus, birthplace of Saint Paul the Apostle. Tarsus is a historic city in south-central Turkey, 20 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea and has a long history of commerce and is still a commercial center today. The bus ride We arrived on a Friday, and immediately our superiors gave us a weekend off. I invited a buddy of...

...Bus Rider’s Journal Los Angeles is a great city that not only embraces multiple diversities, but also amplifies those differences with cultural, economical and racial means. This phenomenon can be seen and examined throughout every street, every corner, every building, every landmark and even every person in the city, crossing from east to west as well as north to south. In order to fully experience the impact of this strong characteristic of Los Angeles, I took four bus rides to go around the city: two on Metro Rapid Line 720 from Westwood to Downtown Los Angeles, with one at around 2:30 p.m. on 2014/10/14 and another one at around 2:10pm on 2014/10/27; one on Metro Rapid Line 2 from Westwood to Pacific Palisades at around 2:20 pm on 2014/11/16 and one on Metro Rapid Line 320 from Pacific Palisade to Westwood at around 4:30pm on 2014/11/16. Along my trip, I developed a sense of understanding of this particular city from east to west through observations. At the perspective of cultural development, the east part of Los Angeles far exceeds the west part. Historically, West side of Los Angeles was built earlier as part of Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica. It was however, never really cultural orientated. Evolving from the rancho, this place later on developed into “wheat fields and orchard lands by Japanese immigrants.” (“West Los Angeles,” Last modified on 13 August 2014 at 00:34, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Los_Angeles.) Along my bus ride, few cultural landmarks were...

...HIS/145 September 17, 2014 Freedom Riders Journal entry December 12th 1961: It has been difficult living in the era that we do. Being an African American in Alabama is not the life I had envisioned for myself. The benefit of going to college, which is handed to white people, is often unobtainable for the black person. I have always known I was destined to do something more with my life. The Jim Crowe laws constantly remind me that I am not an equal to those around me. Last year 1960, the Supreme Court ruled that those very laws are illegal. Shortly after those rulings my sister took part in a sit-in at a drug store, which led to that store changing its policy. Later she met Ella Baker an SCLC activist and was invited to a conference at Shaw University in Raleigh in April 1960. That conference led to the creation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. That committee took nonviolent actions ever more forward by organizing freedom rides. This was a direct challenge of segregation on interstate busses as the Constitution protected interstate commerce. Inspired by my sister’s actions I have made up my mind to join those people. To stand up and stand out in order to see that discrimination comes to an end. There are some 400 freedom riders putting the Supreme Court ruling to the test. We often go in inter-racial teams from somewhere North in to the Segregated South. Essentially backed by Boynton v. Virginia, (1960) ruling that segregation for passengers engaged in interstate...

...we wouldn’t be able to adapt ourselves to everything around us. Therefore when our parents say, “DON’T DO THAT”, “STOP!!!! BEFORE YOU HURT YOURSELF”, “NEVER TOUCH THAT AGAIN.” We will be tempted to find out what it is like as it is “forbidden” and we think it would be a worthwhile experience but it doesn’t turn out to be a fairytale ending. Let me relate to you one of my personal experiences which is quite a hilarious one eventhough I didn’t find it funny at first. I really loved parties; I bet all of you do. I tried my best never to miss one, but one day I got the news that my friend’s birthday party would be tomorrow, so I asked my parents and guess what they said….. “No, son our car is being serviced so we don’t have any transportation.” I asked them if I could go in the bus but they said, “NO WAY, YOU CAN’T RIDE ON A BUS.” I was not a guy who was used to the outdoors therefore I have never ridden a bus. So……… I wanted to experience it and when my parents said ‘no’ I felt a greater desire to ride a bus, so I came up with a plan. I pretended I was going to the party with one of my friends but I got on a bus and I was...

...Historical Report on Race Paula Arellano ETH125 September 3, 2012 University of Phoenix Historical Report on Race I will be doing my report as an Historian. (“In 1952 segregation on inter-state railways was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court”) (Freedom Riders http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAfreedomR.htm). In 1954 there was a similar judgment with inter-state buses. The Deep South kept their segregation policies involving whites sitting in the front of the bus, and blacks sitting closest to the front having to give up their seats to whites. African Americans were punished if they did not abide by the transport segregation policies. They were fined and arrested. Martin Luther King JR helped organize a protest against bus segregation after Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for not giving up her seat to a white man. This protest involved a bus boycott which involved African Americans not ride any bus unless it was integrated Martin Luther King JRs house was fire bombed he was arrested due to this protest and boycott. Anyone that was involved in this boycott was intimidated and harassed, but none of this stopped the boycott. The Montgomery bus company was forced by the Supreme Court to accept integration on their busses after the 13 month boycott. In 1961 The Congress of Racial Equality formed the Free Rides. The Freedom Riders which consist of black and white volunteers began their journey through the Deep South on May 4th, 1961 stopping at “white”...

...Name of Event (thing you did) and location The cross group experience that I took part of was that I used a wheelchair for a day. I went to different places to figure out how it really feels to be in a wheelchair. One of the places I went to on Saturday was grocery shopping inside of Meijer on 28th street. Another place that I went to was the pew campus downtown, and I also decided to try and ride the rapids bus from pew campus to Allendale. Length of time you were there I actually did have to grocery shop while I was at Meijer. I was at Meijer for about two hours. One hour trying to understand and figure out how to shop while in a wheelchair and the other hour actually shopping and experimenting in the store. When I was down at the pew...

... In the late 70’s my father became ill and was unable to work. As a result, we lost our home in Los Angeles and had to move to a rental home in the neighboring city of Compton. Our neighborhood in Los Angeles was multi cultural. We had a mixture of Spanish, German, and African Americans living in our neighborhood. We were true neighbors in the sense of, all the kids in the neighborhood would go to store for Mrs. Mueller. She was from Germany and was an elderly widow. Back then you could borrow a cup a sugar from your neighbor. We took great care of each other and it was a real community. One of the saddest days of my life was moving from this community. Moving to Compton was a complete culture shock for our family. Don’t get me wrong, there are very nice areas of Compton that the media always fail to highlight. However, where we moved was not one of them. This new neighborhood was a little run down in appearance and it was predominately black. There is nothing wrong with living around my culture but in this neighbor we had the same skin color but not the same values. My first few weeks of attending a new school and attempting to make new friends was horrendous. I quickly gained the nickname “Oreo cookie” among the kids. And was asked very Turner 2 Frequently, why do I talk like a white girl? I was confused. I didn’t understand what talking like a white girl meant. These kids were strange and mean. I really missed my friends in Los Angeles...

...Each and every person is unique and has their own experiences, but if there’s anything that we all have in common is having fear. Fear is a feeling that everyone has felt at one point in their life; whether it’s fear of spiders, public speaking or heights everyone has felt it and has possibly tried to overcome it. In my case my fear was roller coasters back in eighth grade and just like many people I was determined to overcome my fear. There are three things to look forward to in eighth grade; being the oldest and feeling a sense or leadership, being the last year of your middle school experience, and the end of year field trip to Six Flags. Of course I was excited for all these things except for one, the Six Flags field trip. However, fourteen...

...My Birthday Slip This was my seventeenth birthday and I couldn’t wait for it, although I was going to be in school for it. I was looking forward to all of the birthday wishes, hugs, and gifts. It always happened that way every year, so I shouldn’t have been that much excited; I guess it was because I was turning a year older. The morning of my birthday, I had gotten up and picked out my birthday outfit. I picked skinny leg khaki pants, a white collared aeropostle, shirt, and brown baby doll shoes. To let it be known that it was my birthday, I added a pink birthday stash that read “Birthday Queen” and a pink and silver crown. I made my hair so pretty, with little tight curls and even did my makeup a little. I like to go all out, so of course I had a brand new brown and cheetah print backpack that was similar to my brown baby doll shoes. I was ready to go. By time I made it to my bus stop down the street from my house, I had already received 3 different sets of balloons and a couple of gifts. The whole ride to school I got phone calls and text messages, so I was beyond happy! All of my balloons were in the aisle and in everyone’s way so it was also a difficult ride to school. Still, I didn’t care because it was my birthday. I couldn’t wait to get to school for two reasons: first, to get off the bus with all of my balloons because I started to get a bit annoyed with them and second, to get more birthday wishes, gifts, and attention. Finally, I had made it to school. I was...

...correctional officers. During his presentation, he had some many different parts that stood out to me. However, the two parts that caught my attention the most, was when he talked about the long ride to a behavioral facility when a inmate behave out of control. Another, was when he shared how he kept work and family separated for 20 years. These two stood out to me the most because I was always curious on how officers handle misbehaved prisoners, those prisoners who obey officers and do what they want. Also, I was curious on how family members feel when their loved ones are away for 12 hours inside a prison and with Mr. Simms wife being there also made it clearer as well....

...Hello everyone! This is part of my #daycationwithamy series featuring San Francisco. I admire San Francisco for its beauty and convenience. It is public transportation friendly, which is awesome possum because 1) parking is expensive and 2) driving around SF is scary with all the hills. Plus, you get to see more of SF if you're not focused on figuring out directions or busy driving because you can simply just stare out the window of the bus to take in its beauty. This daycation itinerary mostly involves lots of walking, public transportation, site seeing, and most imporantly, eating. Our main attraction for this daycation: Lands End, San Francisco, CA (mini hike starting at Sutro Baths and ending at the Labyrinth) Packing List: backpack...

...It began a couple of years ago when my family decided that we were going to go watch a Cubs vs. Cardinals game. It was in Chicago and we had well over twenty people traveling with us. They were all family, and most of them are Cardinal fans. Me being a Cubs fan and having to ride up to Chicago on a bus filled with the opposing crowd was extremely draining. The whole ride up there I was just praying that the ride back would be better. After the long ride we went to our hotel and settled in, because the next day was the big game. We left the hotel to find a place to eat, luckily we could walk most places, and were able to avoid Chicago’s hectic traffic. We were walking down the street when we smelled the aromas coming from the bar on the corner, so naturally we went in to see what the amazing scent was. We went in and found out it was barbecue, so I got some wings, topped with honey barbecue. They were extremely tender and the sauce tasted like a piece of heaven....

...My Friend and I decided to watch the film “1810” on our free time. The film was Produced and Directed by our very own MAS (Multimedia Arts and Sciences) students from intramuros. The Actor's and actresses weren't that bad. Their actions can seen clearly, their lines and dialogues were also clear. But I didn't appreaciate, however, the scenes wherein they were whispering with each other, all of them were talking all at once, you couldn't understand some of them. The theme of this play had really caught my attention. The different camera angles, cinematography, editing and the way the story unfolds in front of the audience are the things that make this film so captive. A film will have more success if it starts with a good story. It evokes emotion in the audience and makes them care about the story, watching to know how it ends, and it makes them care about the characters. The story is about two couples who we’re in a quarrel, because the girlfriend thinks that her boyfriend has an affair with another girl. (I forgot the name of the main characters of this story, so I decided to named them as “Dominique”as the boy, and “Louise” as the girlfriend of Dominique and Rose as the bestfriend of Dominique.) Then, one day, after school, louise decided to go home early and ride on a bus. She seated beside of a strange girl. She notice that the girl looks sick and quiet. Little did she know that the girl who was sitting beside her is the bestfriend of...

...I was only three years old. The sun beat down on the pavement and reflected light off the cars all around me. My mom took my hand and led me away from our sparkling, silver car through the sweltering parking lot. She had already explained that I was going to school so I could learn a lot of new things. But, she would have to leave me there. But, I had almost never been away from my parents, except for when I was with my grandparents. My mom and I walked up to a new place and a strange woman that I didn't know crouched down to speak to me. She introduced herself, her name was Sue and she was going to be one of my teachers. Together, they led me deeper into the classroom. I saw that it was filled small tables and chairs scattered around the room;...

...ratted the soccer players at Tangerine Middle out for trashing the Ax Man at the carnival. This is shown on page 175 when Paul explains, “I looked at Tino to see if he was mocking me. He wasn’t. He was just making conversation. He was in the nicest mood that I have ever seen him in. I figured it was my chance to clear my conscience once and for all. I said, ‘Hey? Do you guys remember when you guys got busted at the carnival?’ ‘Yeah. what about it?’ ‘Well I’m the one who ratted you out. They accused some of the Lake Windsor soccer players of wrecking that exhibit. The Ax Man? I’m the one who told them it was Tangerine Middle soccer players.” Paul thought that since he has finally become close enough with some of the soccer players, he just decided that he had to come clean to them. Instead of Paul never telling them or waiting too long, he told him and now he feels a lot better about even though there will definitely be consequences....
