...Student’s Survival Guide Brandie Bowland Axia College GEN105 July 12, 2009 So I am coming to the end of the 9 weeks of my first two classes. When I first decided to take on going back to school I was thinking to myself “What have I just gotten myself into?” Then came my first day and I was thinking “I hope that I am not in over my head!” Turns out that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. This class made it very easy to learn how to access the resources that are available to me as a student at Axia College. I am writing this survival guide as a resource for me to look back on in the future. Some of the things that were covered in this course that will be of use to my personal action plans are: using Axia’s educational resources, upholding academic honesty, setting and achieving goals, managing time wisely, reading comprehension and retention skills, and applying personality and learning styles. I am going to talk about each one of these topics in this “survival guide”. The first topic that I am going to talk about before I start talking about what I listed above is that because this is all done online it is considered distance learning. It is a lot different than going in to a class and sitting down in front of a teacher and listening to lectures. It does take a little more effort to succeed in distance but once you get the hang of it, it is all uphill from there. Plus, if you are going through a good college then all you could possibly need...

...Student Survival Guide In order to become a successful distance learner, and maintain a high degree of information absorption, I will need a series of tools to assist me. In my effort to combine these tools into an easily accessible format, I am creating this Student Survival Guide This guide will serve as a consistent tool available to me in times of crisis. By depending on this guide I will be able to repeatedly draw from skills I have learned in each block of classes throughout my educational career. In this guide I will address five major points of positive behavior that will ensure my success. These points include: conducting successful library and internet searches; upholding academic honesty; developing effective study skills; managing time wisely; and setting and achieving goals. Specific details in each of these categories will provide a functional tool to make my action plan realistic and attainable. Conducting Successful Library and Internet Searches How and where to find academic resources online: Finding academic resources online will be dependant upon the specific information I am seeking. Am I looking for statistical information; specific information related to a topic; legal information; or general knowledge of a subject? The answers to these questions will provide the type of documentation I am seeking. For instance; .org, .gov, and .edu sites will provide the most reliable information on the internet. However specific information such as legal or medical...

...SURVIVAL GUIDE GEN 105 DUE January 11, 2009 What personal action plans would I develop to achieve success for? Following topics: o Using Axia's Educational Resources o Upholding Academic Honesty o Setting and Achieving Goals o Managing Time Wisely o Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention o Applying Personality and Learning Styles The personal action plan I would develop for using Axia's Educational Resources to achieve success would be to construct a hard copy overview of all the resources and refer to it during my course work. By constructing this outline of sorts I will be providing myself with a reference that will show me where to go for the specific project information I am in need of at that time. Axia provides files I can download to my computer as tools for my coursework enhancement such as: “Microsoft Internet Explorer / Outlook Express, Adobe Reader® 6.0, Macromedia Flash Player, Macromedia Shockwave Player, Microsoft Office Online File Converters and Viewers, Netscape and University of Phoenix Custom Screensaver.” I also have the advantage of the Universities Library for research of all kinds and depths. The Library is housed with article databases, books, journals, testing aids and the Library Tutorial that is the key to the Library’s use. While I use the Library’s resources searches for specific information can be made by using Boolean and wildcard logic to isolate my search needs in different databases such as Thomson Gale PowerSearch and EBSCOhost...

...Writing academic papers or just your normal day to day school work can be very intimidating at times. As long as I have the determination and the drive to succeed, conquering these obstacles will be a relatively easy task. Unlike traditional college where you go in and sit in a class and have months before you finish, online schooling is much more demanding. It requires that you have the motivation to complete your work on time and learn the material that is presented in front of you. A lot of knowledge can be carried on from one’s high school experience but like many people, polishing up those skills you learned years back is much needed. What I hope to accomplish with my survival guide is to develop much needed strategies that will help me in my studies in college. Conducting research for academic papers or even discussion questions is not just an option but a requirement. There are many ways to conduct research and with all these sources at your fingertips. Because of the many sources the task can seem overwhelming at times. One powerful tool at everyone’s disposal is the internet. This is a very valuable tool because there is a wealth of information available. Be warned because not all the information on the internet is creditable. A good way to get accurate information is to cross reference several sites and exempt information that is not correct. Another way to conduct research is through the University Library. Much like a search engine on the internet, the University...

...The transition of High school to College is a very challenging experience for us students. It includes establishing new identities and managing new emotions. College requires us to have a strong ability to adapt. According to Organista, a blogger, “Moving into a new environment and meeting new people means leaving everything that’s familiar. The past may have been great, something that’s hard to leave behind; or maybe it was more difficult, you struggled just to get through, and what you’re facing may be a welcome change”. We can make these new changes as an inspiration to be better. We may encounter stress and anxiety, but we have to surpass it. We may consider stressors such as figuring out new living arrangements, redefining your role in the community, managing finances, and long distance relationship with your parents, how you will deal with your new classmates, and even your roommates can mean extra demands that you may not have been prepared for. Adapting to changes, learning new coping mechanisms, or revisiting some familiar ones is all important strategies that can help you feel grounded. People would always quote, “you have to dance with the rhythm of the environment” which is true. We have to adapt to our new environment. Life is survival of the fittest. But how will we overcome anxiety, stress, and adapting to college life? First, we got to have a good time management. By having an organized schedule, you can stay on track of your priorities and tackle each...

...It states it aims to teach visitors about the cultural history, natural science, plant and animal environment along with other information related such as the effects the rest of the world has on this particular coast. How is object-based learning presented? Give examples; The object-based learning within the museum included many different kinds. Exhibits containing sea creature’s skeletons, shells, replicas of islands, replicas of animals on islands, and prehistoric and historic artifacts from the Coastal Carolina’s human occupation were all object-based within the museum. Each of these objects/artifacts listed and more are set in an exhibit for interpretation. The exhibits all include a brief description of the pieces. Each description is not overwhelming with its information, but simply introduces each piece, leaving it open for further thought by the visitors. Most of the museum is object-based learning. A few exhibits demonstrate a phenomenon. One entire room is painted and set up like the bottom of the ocean. Sea creatures are exhibited on the bottom floor and hung from the ceilings as if they were swimming. Each creature is positioned where it habitats. Plaques are set up around the walkthrough to help visitors identify the creatures around...

...Student Survival Guide On the personality spectrum my biggest dimension was the giver personality. I think that I need to learn how to put other peoples needs aside so that I can focus on my school work more. I love to help others and will always put others before myself, but when going to school in a distance learning environment that will sometimes get in the way, it is easy to put off school work for other people. I need to designate time away from my husband and children so that I can concentrate on the task at hand in my schooling. That does not mean that I need to neglect my family, I just need to also make time for myself. When doing research on the internet I need to be very careful. It is easy to get into websites that are not ones that I should be using for education research. It is difficult because there are websites like Wikipedia that look like they are credible and good for research purposes, but in fact they are not. Sites like wiki are able to be changed by anyone, allowing people to go in and change information, making it false, or adding information that is not correct in with what is. A good way to know if I am on a good website is if it is .edu, .gov, or .org. I need to make sure I am doing lots of research on any topic to make sure that I have all the facts about that topic correct. The University of Phoenix has a lot of good resources to use for research. They have a University Library that is very helpful when doing research. I can choose different...

...1: Living Things and Their Environment Introduction At this point, students have already learned in Grade 8 how the body breaks down food into forms that can be absorbed through the digestive system and then transported to each cell, which was on the other hand discussed in Grade 7 to be the basic unit of life. The learners have also discovered that cells divide to produce new cells by mitosis and meiosis. They have understood that meiosis is an early step in sexual reproduction that leads to variation. Students have been introduced to genetics to be able to appreciate evolutionary differences among species. Learners have also found out that biodiversity is the collective variety of species living in an ecosystem, and by studying the ecosystem; they have come across the various cycling of materials and energy transformation. DRAFT April 29, 2014 All modules in Grade 9 Unit 1-Living Things and Their Environment present student-centered activities that will allow the learners to discover and develop concepts that they may consider useful to their everyday life. At the end of each lesson, key concepts are provided for the students to grasp ideas and information that they will remember even after they have left school. Instructional activities are designed to build up the students’ knowledge, understanding, skills, and ability to transfer learning. The modules generally use authentic assessment for the students to perform real-world tasks demonstrating meaningful application of...
