There they stood, with a 12-70 record. At the bottom of the Atlantic Division. At the bottom of the Eastern Conference. At the bottom of the NBA. The Brooklyn Nets finished the 2009-10 season with a 12-70 record, one of the worst records in the history of the NBA and ABA. They were 25th in the league in attendance, without one single sell-out. The fans didn’t care, the players didn’t care. Everybody was looking forward to the long awaited move to Brooklyn in 2012.

Even with one of the NBA’s worst records in history, and after an extremely painful 2009 season, the Nets didn’t even have the first overall pick in the Draft. The NBA picks the order of the Draft by a lottery system. Each team has thousands of lottery ball combinations, the teams with a worse record has more than others, and that’s how they choose. The Nets, with the worst record in the NBA, couldn’t get any worse than the third overall pick due to NBA rules. On April 26th, 2009, the Nets bad luck …show more content…
The Nets have been talking about a move to Brooklyn since the early 2000’s, but nothing ever materialized. Prokhorov made it happen, The project cost about $1.03B, but it morphed into a great investment for Prokhorov. The arena will sit on the corner of Flatbush Ave and Atlantic Ave, dead center in downtown Brooklyn. The Nets goal of taking of the Knicks as kings of New York started fading from a dream, into a reality.

For the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the Nets would temporarily move from the IZod Center in East Rutherford to the Prudential Center in Newark. ‘The Pru’, as it’s called, was made in 2005 and was a big upgrade from the almost 30 year-old IZod Center. Also, the fan attraction would be larger since it’s closer to the city of New York and public transportation is adamant in Newark. The Nets quickly saw more and more fans join the hype to Brooklyn, and the arena started to fill

The Impact of a Professional Sports Team on a City

...The Impact of a Professional Sports Team on a City Craig Keller Microeconomics 12-2 T -T All major cities in the U.S. have one thing in common with each other; they all have professional sports teams. From New York to Los Angeles, from Seattle to Miami all have professional teams. They all have the devoted fans no matter if they win the championship or they finish last. But having a major sports team in a city is more than just having someone to cheer for. A sports team can and often does a benefit on the city they are in. They benefit the city’s economy in various ways. Oklahoma City is a city that is considered a small market. The city has had sports teams before, an AAA baseball team, and a minor league hockey team, but never a major league team. Oklahoma City is currently the largest city in Oklahoma. In land area, it is the 3rd largest in the nation behind Anchorage and Jacksonville. (Knapp, 2009) Oklahoma City estimated population is 537,734 as of 2006. ( U.S. Census Bureau, 2010) In 2008 the city finally got a professional sports team. The NBA team the Seattle Supersonics moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City and became known as the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move was possible because the city of Oklahoma had been trying for some time to get a professional team. To do this the city came up with what is called the Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS), which financed new and upgraded sports, entertainment, cultural and convention facilities primarily in the downtown...

Business Communications Final Report

...Stevens, Director of Marketing Date: 4/23/15 Subject: Expanding Roundtable Management Round Table management has successfully competed in the United States sports industry, representing 40% of the NBA players in America. We have transformed from an unknown commodity, to a household name in the sports industry, and in the lives of our athletes families. Although we are very successful at our craft, why stop here? The world is bigger than the United States, and we believe Roundtable has the proper personnel, outside resources, and overall promising potential to begin representing international athletes in other basketball leagues outside of the NBA. As it stands now, Roundtable management does not represent any foreign players. If we want to be known as the greatest management firm in the industry, it is ideal that we begin the necessary steps to broadening our brand. NBA.com reports our league has the highest number of foreign players in the league, at 101 players1. The top countries with the most international players are Canada with twelve, which is followed by France’s ten, and lastly, Australia with eight1. These three countries are paving the way for young athletes to reach their athletic stardom. It is important to note that although a select few are chosen to play in the NBA, the talent pool surpasses more than these individuals. To make the proper transition, we must expand a country at a...

The Challenges Facing Professional Sports

...Basketball Association Major League Baseball National Hockey League European Soccer’s Path to Financial Health: UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Creative Accounting Roster Depreciation Allowance Franchise Appreciation Summary The Financial Status of Professional Sports Growth of Professional Sports Major Leagues The 1990s and early 2000s was a period of substantial growth for professional sports at all levels. The number of teams in the Big 4 major leagues grew from 103 franchises in 1989 to 122 franchises by 2001. During that time, the National Hockey League (NHL) added eight expansion teams, Major League Baseball (MLB) added four, the National Football League (NFL) added three, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) added five teams. In addition, several new leagues were launched in the 1990s with aspirations of becoming prominent national properties, most notably Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). By 2001, each of the Big 4 leagues had reached a saturation point, having established franchises in nearly every market capable of sustaining a major sports property. A few markets remain available for certain leagues. For example, Los Angeles has not had an NFL team since the Rams abandoned LA for a new stadium in St. Louis in 1995. While the NFL would love to have a franchise in the country’s 3rd largest television market, the lack of a modern, “NFL-ready” stadium has prevented a team from filling this attractive...

The Chinese Music Industry’s Plight and Future

...The Chinese Music Industry’s Plight and Future At first thought, some people, including myself, would not include the music industry as part of the grand macroeconomic development blueprint. Yet music not only represents an essential part of our modern lifestyle, but also exists as a key stimulus to economic growth. Nevertheless, following the advent of the internet, rampant piracy and lack of copyright protection led the Chinese music industry into the darkest period it has ever seen. Song Ke, one of the China’s most prominent music industry gurus, has been pressured to open two Peking duck restaurants to have sustainable income. Thousands of musicians have been forced to reevaluate their lives and decide whether they would like to continue the hard labor providing free soul food for the hungry yet ungrateful people. While the Chinese music industry now faces stagnate development, unable to overcome problems such as copyright violations, lack of centralized control and coordination, through surveying and analyzing the anatomy of the problems and possible solutions, we will ultimately see why the Chinese music industry is likely to change for the better in the near future. This is important because China is undergoing the vital transition from an export-led growth model to a consumer based economy and the music industry can serve as an economic force to stimulate endogenous private consumption. Before the end of the Cultural Revolution, music in China was limited to Chinese...
