My name is Naole Simbassa and I’m a sophomore currently attending Energy Institute High School. I was born in Ethiopia and I was raised by my mother until I was eleven years old. I have two older brothers who are in college and one sister who is about to graduate from high school, my father works as a cab driver to support me and my sister. As a child I was challenged because of the surroundings I grew up in. For instance, the lack of education, resources and also just the fact of seeing the people around you struggling to feed themselves and/or their family. This exposure motivated me to work harder and take advantage of every opportunity presented to me when I came to U.S, this was due to the amount of resources and level of education the school provided me with for free. Knowing what kind of place I came from helped me profit from my newfound capabilities and tuition the school provided me with, because I know there are people who are still struggling to get acceptable education and the resources they need which made me not take it for granted.
Coming to the U.S. opened many opportunities and gave me a different outlook on the world. It gave me the opportunity to explore some of my interests like sports and the Engineering fields of mechanics and petroleum. It taught me how to interact with my coworkers, work with different types of people, how to take public transportation, and also learn punctuality.
