...taken to another level. There are individuals who can be described as “full of themselves” or have excessively loved themselves and may seem to have forgotten the “love others” part of the quote. These people are what others may tag as narcissists. But, there is more to narcissism than merely being full of one’s self. Havelock Ellis (1898, as cited in Campbell & Foster, 2007) coined the term “narcissus-like” after the Greek myth of Narcissus, who rejected the efforts shown by a nymph named Echo and had eventually led him to fall in love with himself. He came up with the...

...Personality disorders such as narcissism may not seem very harmful, but having high levels of narcissism may cause distress and pose various risks to the emotional and psychological health of individuals (Clifton, Turkheimer & Oltmanns, 2009; Panek, Nardis & Konrath, 2013). Narcissists form relationships to receive validation rather than forming lasting and intimate relationships (DeWall et al., 2011), this may negatively impact their ability to sustain healthy and mutually fulfilling relationships (Panek, Nardis & Konrath, 2013). Also, some individuals with high levels of aggression and narcissism may react with hostility when condemned or disagreed with, which could pose a threat to society (Panek, Nardis & Konrath, 2013). Thus, it is important to examine whether SNSs play a role in either the promotion of narcissistic behaviours or the maintenance of narcissistic behaviours. Narcissism and SNSs...

...(2007) 2105–2115 www.elsevier.com/locate/paid Narcissism, vanity, personality and mating effort Vincent Egan *, Cara McCorkindale Department of Psychology, Glasgow Caledonian University, Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow G4 0BA, Scotland, United Kingdom Received 10 November 2006; received in revised form 19 June 2007; accepted 27 June 2007 Available online 15 August 2007 Abstract The current study examined the relationship between narcissism and vanity, and the degree these are predicted by the ‘Big Five’ personality traits and mating effort (ME) using a sample of 103 females recruited from a large beauty salon. Narcissism correlated with vanity at 0.72 (P < 0.001), and was associated positively with extraversion (E), ME and the subscales of vanity; narcissism was associated negatively with neuroticism (N) and agreeableness (A). Vanity correlated positively with E, conscientiousness, both subscales of narcissism, and ME, and negatively with N and A. A composite narcissism–vanity score was produced using principal components analysis, and used along with scores from the NEO-FFI-R to predict mating effort. The narcissism–vanity composite, low A and E significantly and independently predicted mating effort (adjusted R2 = 0.28, F(9.96) = 7.74, P < 0.001). These results show that mating effort is additionally predicted by narcissism as well as self-reported personality. Ó 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. ...Narcissism and Social Media: Is there a Connection? INTRODUCTION: Social media is a tremendously useful tool that we now rely on in our daily lives. Social media enable all of us to communicate and stay updated to our friends and family. Research could suggest social media sites as the cause behind the rise of teen and young adult narcissism? Researchers also suggest social media sites as being a forum for self-praise and gasconading. The report written by, Christopher J. Carpenter, makes an attempt to correlate social media sites to narcissistic behavior. The research of the report goes in depth examining one possible predictor of narcissistic behavioral use of social media sites. The research conducted was in depth and it also examined narcissistic personality traits, the history of the narcissistic personality inventory (NPI) and narcissism on Facebook. The NPI includes aspects such as ‘‘a grandiose sense of self-importance or uniqueness,’’ ‘‘an inability to tolerate criticism,’’ and ‘‘entitlement or the expectation of special favors without assuming reciprocal responsibilities.’’ METHOD: According to the report written by Carpenter “there were 294 participants in the survey whose ages ranged from 18 to 65 years ( M = 23.26, SD = 7.30)” of the 294 participants “74.1% were college students and 68% were female”. The participants were not compensated for the participation and according to the research they were recruited by “the members of an undergraduate...

...As Walter Anderson stated “bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life.” This quotation by Anderson and many like it refer to a way of ‘coping’ in the event of misfortune, and has generally been linked to identifying one’s self in their perception to the external world. Throughout this essay the main concept that will be reiterated is sublimation and its relationship with repression both which are used in coping and their impact on narcissism and its development within the structure of the mind. These will all ultimately come together to further the understanding of todays’ western society in terms of the enforcement of repression against that of narcissistic concerns and the inevitability of sublimatory...

...Ryan Plunkett Ray Setters AMS 250 7 March 2013 The Culture of Narcissism Paper For over the past 30 years there has been a prevailing idea that American society has changed drastically. While it is undeniable that every person is different and there are always plenty of exceptions to the norm, in many ways our modern society has become very similar to what Christopher Lasch predicted in The Culture of Narcissism. Unfortunately, it would be safe to say that some modern people are in a state that is extremely pre-occupied with the self. The idea of narcissism came from psychology and is mostly attributed to Sigmund Freud. It was considered to be an extreme preoccupation with the self that distorted ones relationship to reality. This resulted in an inability to make a clear distinction between themselves as the subject and what existed outside them. They were so focused on themselves that they lost awareness of the real beyond them. Because the narcissist does not recognize the separate existence of 'the other' they tend to use reality as a mirror to reflect messages back to the self. The other is there to impress, to be admired by, and to get pity from. The Narcissist is so identified with his/her needs that the other person is simply there to be available for them. In his book The Culture of Narcissism Christopher Larsch describes the Narcissistic personality, “the Narcissist can function in the everyday world - and is often very charming. However, his devaluation...

...Unlike Freud, Kernberg views anaclitic and narcissistic object divisions as irrelevant, and deemed it as devalued or fixated on aggression. Which led to his categorization additions of three types of narcissism: adult narcissism, normal infantile narcissism, and pathological narcissism (Kernberg, 1993). Normal adult narcissism, is deemed as having a healthy level of self- esteem and is due to the existence of healthy object relations. Therefore meaning, the person has experienced several positive relationships early on with caretakers, allowing them to internalize a positive mental concept of self and others (i.e. objects). What derives from this positive object relations is an integrated sense of self that continuously develops. Next, normal...

...Narcissism and the American Dream in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman Narcissism och den amerikanska drömmen i Arthur Millers en handelsresandes död. Fredrik Artan Faculty of Arts and Education Subject: English Points:15.0 Supervisor: Magnus Ullén Examiner: Anna Swärdh 2014-06-18 Serial number Abstract This essay focuses on the theme of the American Dream in relation to narcissism in Miller’s Death of a salesman. The purpose is to demonstrate that a close reading of the main protagonist, Willy Loman, suggests that his notion of success in relation to the American Dream can be regarded as narcissistic. This essay will examine this by first observing how Willy´s notion of success is represented in the play, then look at how his understanding of it can be viewed from a narcissistic standpoint. The results I have found in my analysis show that there is a connection between Willy’s understanding of success and his narcissistic behavior. He displays traits such as grandiosity, arrogance, need of specialness and denial of emotions. His relationship with other characters reveals his lack of empathy, manipulation and exploitation of others as well as his need of superiority and fear of inferiority. The conclusion is that Willy and his notion of success could be considered as narcissistic. And there were 128 rater participants, 86 of which were female. Rater participants were randomly assigned to rate five different Facebook pages; however, if they knew the person, they were told to not view the profile and they were then reassigned a different page. This study used a correlational...

...Narcissism Loving Yourself! Narcissism is a term that originated with Narcissus in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water. Currently it is used to describe a person characterized by egotism, vanity, pride, or selfishness; an erotic gratification derived from admiration of one's own physical or mental attributes. That is the definition of Narcissism. Sometimes I believe it to be a good thing and other times it can be the worst possible, depending on how you look at it. I mostly believe that you have to have the right amount of self-love. Some take it to far as to defining our generation as Generation Me. We want everythine for ourselves, we want evything to be our way or the highway. We want to be boss, and want people to deal with it. I think we could all be narcissists because im sure we all believe with the statement “If I ruled the world, it would be a better place.” I know I agree with that. Its shown in the last twenty five years, that narcissism in students have gone up a considerably thirty more percent than statistics showed in 1982. That eighty percent of the population, claim importance of some kind, from claiming to be the most important in the whole world, or to something little, like believing theyre the best at everything they do. Its like a person at the back of a line, fights and argues until they can get to the front of the line because they believe they deserve to be there. Its really becoming a fearful...

...NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER EXPLORING NARCISSISM WILLIE RUTH HILL HOLMES COMMUNITY COLLEGE NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER What is Narcissism? According to the Mayo Clinic (2014), narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that’s vulnerable to the slightest criticism. In an article in Medical News Today (2014), narcissistic personality disorder, also known as NPD is defined as a personality disorder in which the individual has a distorted self- image, unstable and intense emotions, is overly preoccupied with vanity, prestige, power and person adequacy and has an exaggerated sense of superiority. Narcissism can affect how you perform at work, how successful you are in relationships and also affect your financial affairs. If someone with a narcissistic personality is not praised as they think they should be, they may become unhappy or dissatisfied with themselves. Because of their reactions to certain words or situations this causes others to feel that being around them is very undesirable. They may feel that a narcissistic person is conceited and think that they are better than anyone else, so maintaining a friendship may become difficult. Also in the article written by the Mayo Clinic (2014) a narcissistic person may have secret feelings of...
