National Honor Society Leadership Analysis

Leadership, character, service, and scholarship. Those are the four pillars of the National Honors Society, and as such, they are the basis for Brandon’s own chapter. The National Honors Society looks for each of these traits in its chapter members, and in a way, most applicants reflect most if not all of the four. Leadership is commonly defined as something belonging to managing people, but management and leadership are not the same thing. While someone who merely ordered and kept track would be considered a manager of sorts, they would not be a leader, because though leaders do what was mentioned prior, they go above and beyond that.
While I was a part of the MDOT Bridge Competition in my freshman year, I was the “leader” of our team, Stay-On-Top.

Comparing Quality Awards

...A W A R D S A Comparative Analysis Of National and Regional Quality Awards by Robert J. Vokurka, Gary L. Stading and Jason Brazeal Q UALITY, AS MOST ORGANIZATIONS KNEW IT, RAPIDLY CHANGED DURING THE 1980s. Due to successful Japanese efforts, U.S. industries began to discover the competitive advantages that quality could bring and how the lack of a quality system could bring an end to business. With customers demanding quality and competitors responding to such demands, businesses turned to total quality management (TQM) as the key to enhance overall performance. As customer expectations increased and performance improvement initiatives were implemented, quality evolved from a product specific focus to an organizationwide effort, from a separate manufacturing function to a strategic business initiative. The quality function was expanding, and with that came new practices concerning continuous improvement. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, several countries established programs to recognize the inventive, yet effective, quality practices taking place—once again, after Japan, which began honoring quality practices in the 1950s. The criteria of most of these award programs encouraged strategic initiatives in the approach and deployment of quality practices. But as with most successful quality initiatives, the award programs underwent continuous improvements in design and administration. In their pursuit of TQM, organizations around the world began turning to quality...

Ethics

...Ethical Analysis 1 Military Ethics and Values No Name Class Instructor May 7, 2015 Ethical Analysis 2 We have learned in a capitalistic market the measurement of success is the maximization of the shareholders wealth and maximized profit. Personal gains and potential wealth are what drives the economy and therefore affects more than just the corporation themselves. Many regulatory guidance’s have been issued in an attempt to better protect competitors and also consistently stimulate the economy. Without these regulations the competition levels between companies would be so stiff that it could possibly entice the market to gradually move away from the capitalistic market that we enjoy today. Although Thomas W. Dunfee states, "Since the goal of the public corporation is to maximize shareholder wealth, management should take any action necessary to achieve this goal so long as no law is violated", is very true for many corporations this line of thinking does not apply to the United States Military. The Armed Forces have long been regarded by some as the largest organization in the United States. The goal of this organization is not profit or personal gain, rather to insure national security and undisputable freedom. Being of a nation founded on principles that promote both infinite dignity and self-worth, military personnel must always stand ready to carry out these principles. Major corporations expect the maximizing of profit...

Global Leadership Mindset

...The Global Leadership Mindset BY EILEEN M. ROGERS The integration of multiple geographies, cultures, nationalities, ages and styles in enterprises around the world is having an enormous impact on business relationships. Leaders today need a new, specialized set of skills if they are to be successful. 18 Chief Learning Officer • June 2010 • www.clomedia.com ueled by social networks and technology, universal collaboration is becoming a daily business reality. Global data and knowledge are now accessed on devices that people can hold in the palms of their hands. Jim Kouzes, renowned leadership expert, recently described this shift by stating that “while the content of leadership has remained the same over the past 20 years, the context has not.” Leaders striving for success today must be able to master three new levels of competence: • Global business acumen: The new financial, industry, functional and technical skills needed to navigate a market characterized by rapid evolution of business models, markets, products, and mergers and acquisitions. • Global mindset: The capacity to engage in a boundaryless and synthesizing cognitive process that identifies opportunity and innovation in complexity. • Global citizenship: A potent combination of geographic, political, economic, governmental, legal, cultural, technological and environmental savvy that informs business strategy formulation and execution. Global Mindset vs. Global Citizenship A global mindset includes the ability...

...socialization Process by which individuals acquire the knowledge, language, social skills, and value to conform to the norms and roles required for integration into a group or community. It is a combination of both self-imposed (because the individual wants to conform) and externally-imposed rules, and the expectations of the others. In an organizational setting, socialization refers to the process through which a new employee 'learns the ropes,' by becoming sensitive to the formal and informal power structure and the explicit and implicit rules of behavior. See also organizational culture and orientation. Elements of Socialization[edit] Socialization is a fundamental sociological concept, comprising a number of elements. While not every sociologist will agree which elements are the most important, or even how to define some of the elements of socialization, the elements outlined below should help clarify what is meant by socialization. Goals of Socialization[edit] A kindergarten in Afghanistan. Arnett,[1] in presenting a new theoretical understanding of socialization (see below), outlined what he believes to be the three goals of socialization: impulse control and the development of a conscience role preparation and performance, including occupational roles, gender roles, and roles in institutions such as marriage and parenthood the cultivation of sources of meaning, or what is important, valued, and to be lived for In short, socialization is the process that prepares...

Individualism is the highest ranking in Hofstede’s Analysis.  With a group of 3, Masculinity is our highest-ranking dimension. Everyone in the group ranked High with masculinity, which means that the U.S. experiences a higher degree of gender differentiation of roles.  Males dominate many roles, though women are more competitive. The results for power distance are not consistent with Hofstede as the 2nd ranking among our group.  This means that societal levels from governments, families and businesses are more equal and allows for cooperation and a more stable cultural environment. 2/3 of the group showed a high individualism dimension.  This data provides that being from the U.S., individuals are more likely to have an individualistic attitude, be more self-reliant, and look out only for...

Ethnic Conflict and Genocide

...Running head: Midterm Examination M4A1: Midterm Examination James Hallihan Ethnic Conflict and Genocide  Theory: In the case of Bosnia, choose the most important theoretical aspect (primordial, constructivist, instrumental, modernization) that you find most helpful in your understanding of the conflict. What does this approach illuminate to you that you find so important and how might it direct you towards one or other levels of analysis? In looking at the Bosnian conflict the most important aspect of the conflict was social constructivism. The definition of Social constructivism is “identities are molded, refabricated, and mobilized in accord with reigning cultural scripts and centers of power”(Cerulo, 1997, p.387). In Bosnia there were three major ethnic groups fighting for control of Bosnia: 1. Serbs- The Serbian people are Orthodox Christians 2. Croats- The Croatian people are Catholic Christians 3. Bosniaks- The Bosniaks are Muslim The two main actors in this conflict originally came from Croatia and Serbia which were all part of Yugoslavia and Russian controlled at one point in time. There is some primordialism overtones in this conflict however, “it is almost impossible for people in the region to trace the ethnic line of most inhabitants”(Jesse &Williams, 2011, p.146), and due to intermarriage between the Croats and Serbians in the region, there are no “physical differences among people of different ethnic origins”(Harvey, 2000, pp.42-43)...
