Needs Analysis
The success of any organization is dependent upon the development of the employees and ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, and abilities to carry out the mission of the organization in a way that will achieve company goals and objectives. Target is one of the largest retail department stores, and a contributing factor to their success is developing employees. Prior to training, Target must conduct a needs analysis to determine if and what training is necessary to achieve the company’s goals and objectives. The first step is to conduct an organizational analysis to review where the organization is in regards to reaching their goals. They analyze what has been accomplished and what still needs to be accomplished to achieve the goals. From the outcome of this analysis, the organization conducts a task analysis to break down the goals into small tasks. With this information, they move on to the team analysis to see what level of skills the team possesses and what training is required to get them to the level needed to complete the necessary tasks for the organization. Organizational Analysis
“Target is an upscale discounter that provides high quality, on trend merchandise at attractive prices in clean, spacious and guest-friendly stores. In addition, Target operates an online business Target.com (http://investors.target.com). Target operates in 1,925 stores, 1,795 in the United States and 130 in Canada. Target is known for providing outstanding customer service; this continues to be their focus as they expand the business in Canada with a goal of having 215 stores in Canada in 2015. Targets mission statement states “it's our belief that great design is fun, energetic, surprising and smart—and it should be accessible and affordable for everyone. When we talk about our dedication to good design, we don’t just mean how something looks, but also how it satisfies a need, how it simplifies your life, and how it makes you feel” (https://corporate.target.com).
Target like many retailers are learning to adjust their business strategy to meet the needs of their consumers. Technological advances have changed the way consumers shop, brick and mortar stores are no longer the mecca they used to be. A percent of consumers prefer to be able to shop when and where they want, Target.com, the online shopping experience allows customers that freedom. They have introduced even more conveniences for consumers such as buy online pick up in store and ship to store and mobile apps. Target has forged relationships with social networks such as Pinterest and Cartwheel for its customers. Target is also revamping its brick and mortar stores to respond to the shift in online shopping and building smaller format locations. They have a small store strategy for urban markets and have also experimented with pop up locations in cities such as New York.
Target has over 370 thousand employees. In order to service their guests in the manner they state in their mission and vision statement there must be a plan to train all their employees to perform in their roles. Target has 120 different career paths for its associates to take. They have a robust training program that includes; Training and Mentoring, Talent Management and a regular review process. These programs train and prepare associates for their next position within the organization. Speaking with associates about the skills and ability needed for positions within the company ensure associates have a development plan that will build bench strength for the organization. Target has ensured they invest in training programs because they know the return is a well trained staff that is able to execute and meet all performance and company goals.
Team Analysis

Target has about 360,000 employees around the world (https://corporate.target.com, 2014). Target understands the importance of career development and diversity within the organization. Target has found many ways to attract and maintain dedicated employees. The company offers over 120 different career paths for employees to explore to help them find the career that fits their personal style. Target is still spending a great amount of time trying to clean up the data hacking breach that affected about 70 million customers during the holidays in 2013. This security breaches has caused their CEO to resign and customers to lose trust in the company (T. HSU, 2014). To find out how the company can help improve the business they follow a talent planning routine. The routine consists of an annual best team survey which allows team members to voice their opinion (https://corporate.target.com, 2014). With the many changes in technology and the growing competitive market it, target should have the survey twice a year. Doing so will allow more time for the leaders to address concerns, changes and issues in the workplace. Target partners with Gallup Corporation to create a positive work atmosphere that supports personal well-being (https://corporate.target.com, 2014). The organization is committed to ensuring that their team members’ lives are based in five elements of their philosophies which are health, career satisfaction, social relationships, financial security and the community. There is a direct connection between employee and customer service. When employees are satisfied with their job it shows through their customer service. To help ensure the team members are creating an exceptional shopping experience for their customers a survey should be sent to random customers the day after a purchase was made. This can be sent via email or text to s cell phone. Target embraces diversity and inclusion. Over 10,000 team members participate in the organizations diversity and inclusion council. The council is made up of six groups which include African American, Asian American, Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual, Transgender, Military and Women (https://corporate.target.com, 2014). This council allows team members the ability to communicate and work with colleagues and customers from different backgrounds.
Overall Target offers their team members endless possibilities, and experiences. Making the few suggested changes Target will continue to motivate and develop their team members.
Task Analysis When a business establishes a task analysis they are outlining the needs of each position then create a way to impart knowledge upon their workers while maintaining their motivation. Target’s leaders believe that all types of acknowledgement of job well done increases their team members’ performance. They do this by offering both formal and informal recognition programs (Target.com, 2014).
Performing a task analysis allow leaders and managers to simplify the many jobs they have into more manageable tasks. Simplifying jobs allows there to be a more efficient means to complete specific tasks which helps to reach their goals in a more expeditious manner. Task analysis gives employees the opportunity to complete their given tasks in a way in which they are able to reach the company’s goals and increase their performance. Target’s goals for their team members are to have a very rewarding and positive work experience. According to Target.com, 2014, career well-being is gathering opportunities to learn and grow, being recognized for contributions, and feeling comfortable in the workplace. Target partners with their members and encourages them to take responsibility for their job growth. They are not a one size fits all organization. They have various training initiatives that permits their employees to choose from multiple training opportunities to advance their knowledge, job and organizational. This company’s training programs offers a variety of options, from self-paced resources to position-based training (Target.com, 2014).
