Copyright © 2010, Richard Ivey School of Business Foundation Version: (A) 2010-05-03 In March 2009, Donna and Jim Green looked with dismay at the financial statement summarizing the performance of Old Mule Farms for the year 2008. Old Mule’s cow-calf operation had experienced another year of losses. Especially frustrating was that the losses occurred despite the Greens’ multiple efforts to improve the farm’s efficiency. While these efforts improved performance compared to 2007, they were not sufficient to overcome the decline in calf prices, so the operation continued...

...he inspires people to change with hope for a good future between the “blacks” and “whites”. Baldwin was not aware that he lived in a racist society until he had experienced it when he traveled to small village in Switzerland. Baldwin describes about his experiences living in the village and how he was able to see the issues of race. He realized that his life was defines by the color of skin in Europe. When he got there the villagers stared at him and treated him like an alien coming from a different world. “From all available evidence no black man had ever set foot in this tiny Swiss village before I came”, it was like villagers have never seen a black man before. The small children were afraid of him, stated to should Neger! Neger! And ran away from him. People are curious about him, about his skin color, his hair, and everything. “I was simply a living wonder,” Baldwin starts to think that the difference between “whites” and “blacks” doesn’t not only exist in America society, but also around Europe. Baldwin often refers to his emotions when writing about the conflicts between “whites”...

...“MOMMY, WHAT DOES 'NIGGER' MEAN?” Study Questions: 1. The author, as a third grader, at first misunderstood a word she has heard so many times before because of the different meanings that the word connotes during different occasions. During family gatherings when she was young, she used to hear the word “nigger” be used in different context. For instance when a person boasts or proudly relates stories, it could mean an approval for strength, intelligence or drive. When nigger is used as a possessive adjective, it could also become a term of endearment for husband or boyfriend. It becomes a word that describes the pure essence of manhood – the struggle and present survival against the odds. On the other hand, nigger(s) could also mean or describe the following: parents who neglect their children, drunken people who fight in public, people who don't look for job, people with excessively dirty mouths or unkempt households. The one she heard when she was at school was used against her. Out of jealousy, the word was used as a curse or derogatory term to humiliate her. For that moment, the word nigger had a negative connotation. But, what about the times it was used positively like what I've mentioned above? Well, according to Naylor, the word itself is harmless but it is the consensus that gives power it. The collective opinion of people controls the meaning of a particular word. 2. Naylor explains what happens when a community decides to take over a word and renegotiate...

...Mingzhao Lin LIN 1 Stephen Bulter Ph.D 16.11.2014 Awaken from the nightmare A photo displayed on one of James Mason’s galleries— The War in Central Bosnia. The photo was named “The Unknown” and taken on the summer of 1993. A year before this, 1992, the Serbs attacked Bosnia. The destruction of war was tremendous: buildings were split open with their wires hanging outside, villages were burnt, and rivers of people were fleeing. Inside this seemingly moving picture, lies a stillness— a coffin, an open coffin. Its white sophisticated surface was dabbed with spots of rain from the grey above, dimming its reflections. A body lied inside, as the hoary clouds grow larger, hovering moistly above the mournful land. His hand was tied with his fists on his chest, like the pharaoh of ancient Egypt, symboling the immense power and wealth; or maybe, simply, for the convenience of burying. The word “Nepoznat” was narrowly engraved on two pieces of wood that were nailed on the apex of the coffin. Later I found out, it meant “The Unknown” in Croatian. The horrified expression was now gone from the man’s face. His eyes were closed like he was sleeping. He looked peaceful and relieved. To him, the war had left, the pain was gone and the suffer wouldn't bother him anymore. But, it was only because he was dead. While the world focused on Sarajevo (the capital of Bosnia), the real fighting was going on in villages and towns. Most of the time it wasn't even fighting, but...

...Volume– V, Issue– 02, July-December, 2010 Problems and Prospects of SMEs Loan Management: A Study on Mercantile Bank Limited, Khulna Branch S. M. AKTERUJJAMAN 1 Abstract SMEs all over the world have been playing a crucial role in promoting economic development as well as industrial production. SME financing has been identified as a major obstacle to SME growth. Unfortunately, the issue seems to be as unresolved as it always has been. Though the majority of the issues are with the SME themselves, the banks also have major issues in designing financial products for the SMEs. This study tries to find out the underlying problems from the bank’s perspective. The major findings are related to the high interest and loan duration rates, reasons for SMEs relatively informal way of doing business in contrast to bank’s formal procedures and prerequisites, bank’s relative inexperience in this field. They are also related to the bank’s lack of perspective, the viability and benefits of cluster unity, approach to informal loan takers and non-usage of modern technology and accounting procedures. The recommendations were provided based on the analysis and findings. Key words: Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Financing, Loan, Technology, Cluster. 1. INTRODUCTION Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) all over the world have been playing a crucial role in promoting economic development as well as industrial production. In particular, SMEs provide the necessary foundations for sustained growth...

...ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division 2005 Fall Technical Conference: ARES-ARICE Symposium on Gas Fired Reciprocating Engines September 11 – 14 ,2005, Ottawa, Canada ICEF2005-1352 Laser Ignition - a New Concept to Use and Increase the Potentials of Gas Engines Dr. Günther Herdin/GEJenbacher GmbH & Co OHG Prof. Ernst Wintner/Technical University of Vienna DI Johann Klausner/GEJenbacher GmbH & Co OHG Josef Graf/Technical University of Vienna DI Martin Weinrotter/Technical University of Vienna Kurt Iskra/Technical University of Graz ABSTRACT Due to market demands aimed at increasing the efficiency and the power density of gas engines, existing ignition systems are rapidly approaching their limits. To avoid this, gas engine manufacturers are seeking new technologies. From the viewpoint of gas engine R&D engineers, ignition of the fuel/air mixture by means of a laser has great potential. Especially the thermodynamic requirements of a high compression ratio and a high power density are fulfilled well by laser ignition. Results of measurements on the test bench confirm the high expectations – with a BMEP of 1.8 MPa it was possible to verify NOx values of a non-optimized system of 30 ppm (70 mg/Nm³ @ 5 % O2) with very high combustion stability. In the meantime, GEJ can look back at 6 years of excellent experience and can see itself as the “technological leader” in the field of laser ignition. Despite this, considerable developmental steps are still necessary to adapt...

...Volume–VI, Number-01, January-June, 2011 Customers’ Attitude towards Wireless Internet Services in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study Comparing WIMAX Based and EDGE/EVDO Based Internet Service S.M. MONIRUL ISLAM* BULBUL AHAMED** Abstract This study is an attempt to measure the attitude of customers towards the wireless Internet services in Bangladesh based on the Mertin Fishbein’s multi attribute attitude model. Some salient attributes (i.e., speed, bandwidth fluctuation rate) of WIMAX based and EDGE/EVDO based Internet services that affect the attitude of the customers have been selected which customers emphasizes to take purchase-decision as well as usage continuation decision. Two types of wireless Internet service providers (WIMAX and EDGE/EVDO) and ten salient attributes have been considered for this study. It has been found from the study that customers form more positive attitude towards WIMAX based Internet service than EDGE/EVDO based service. Observed differences in mean attitude of different attributes for the two categories of wireless Internet services are measured through Z-test to test the significance of those differences. Findings of this study may be used as an index by the Internet service providers for improvement of their services to satisfy the customers.
