Introduction
Urosepsis is a severe illness that occurs when an infection starts in the urinary tract and spreads into the bloodstream. Neonatal urosepsis is urosepsis that develops in a baby younger than 90 days.
The bacteria may come from another part of the body or from outside the body. Bacteria that come from another part of the body are carried to the urinary tract by the blood. Bacteria then grow and multiply in the kidneys or bladder and go back into the bloodstream. Bacteria that get into the urinary tract from outside the body come in through the urinating tube (urethra) and infect the bladder. The infection then spreads to the kidneys and into the bloodstream.

How is this diagnosed?
This condition is diagnosed based on:
Your baby's symptoms.
Physical exam.
Your child may also have other tests to confirm the diagnosis. These tests include:
Urine tests.
Blood tests.
Use of a needle to get a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (lumbar puncture or spinal tap).
Imaging tests that use sound waves and a computer (ultrasound) to make a picture of the urinary tract.
If an ultrasound result shows an abnormality of the urinary tract, your baby may need to have a special type of X-ray. This test uses dye put into your baby's bladder before an image (voiding cystourethrography) is taken.
How is this treated?
This condition is treated with:
Medicine. Your baby may get antibiotic medicine through an IV tube. Your baby may also get blood pressure medicine.
Fluids. These will be given through an IV tube to prevent your baby from losing too much body fluid (dehydration). Fluids also can help keep your baby's blood pressure steady.
A machine to help your baby breathe (respirator).
