Topic: Smoking
General Purpose: To persuade my audience about the negative effects on smoking
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience about the negative effects through education
Thesis: There is no doubt that smoking cigarettes is an extremely harmful habit rooted in our culture that needs to be ended.
Introduction
I. Attention Getter: Have you ever had to watch your loved one that you know suffer or die from smoking? When I was just eight years old I witnessed my great-grandma die from lung cancer. Distraught and confused, I asked my mom for an explanation and she simply held up a cigarette. I don’t understand how something so small and accessible can have such a huge impact on a person’s life. Whether you’re currently an avid smoker or despise the addicting habit, there is no denying the negative consequences that come from smoking cigarettes. Today, over millions of people all over the world voluntarily choose to poison their bodies with countless harmful toxins all leading to one eminent result: a prompt and unavoidably strenuous fatality.
I. Thesis: There is no doubt that smoking cigarettes is an extremely harmful habit rooted in our culture that needs to be ended.
II. Preview: Today I am going to talk to you about the negative effects smoking imposes on your body, how educating people about this harmful habit will prevent more deaths and possible resolutions to this problem.
III. [Transition: Preview the introduction]
Body
I. Problem: The negative effects smoking imposes on your body
A. Lung cancer
1. According to the book “After Tobacco” Smoking accounts for 85% of lung cancer cases.
2. According to the article “Cigarette smoking and lung cancer: pediatric roots” A recent comparative modeling study of the impact of reduced smoking on lung cancer mortality in the United States during 1975–2000 suggests that approximately 795,852 lung cancer deaths were averted due to changes in smoking behavior among American men and women. Approximately 2,504,043 lung cancers could have been averted had tobacco control efforts been completely effective in eliminating smoking as of 1965.
B. Cardiovascular Disease
1. According to the book “After Tobacco” Tobacco consumption and smoking remains the largest risk factor for cardiovascular diseases worldwide.
2. If smoking had ceased in 2006, approximately 750,000 cardiovascular deaths could have been avoided.
II. Solution: Education
A. School
1. “According to the article Adolescent Substance use and peer use” For every one step increase in peer smoking the odds for daily smoking increase over twofold and for every one step increase in peer respect for smoking the odds for daily smoking increases by about 85%. Additionally to these risk factors, school level peer smoking increases the odds for daily smoking by over 91%.
2. For every one step increase academic grades the odds for daily smoking decrease by 6%.
B. Parents
1. According to the article “Adolescent Substance use and peer use” for every one step increase in time spent with parents the odds for daily smoking decrease by over 14%.
2. According to the book “After Tobacco” smokers quitting by age 30 had almost the same life expectancy as never smokers.
III. Intensifying the solution: How this course of action will resolve the problem
A. If you’re not educated of the problematic effects it can become easy to participate in things that are detrimental and well-being.
1. According to the article “Cigarette smoking and lung cancer: pediatric roots” The Affordable Care Act has made tobacco dependence treatment available to millions more smokers who want to quit. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act has given the United States Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco products and to protect both youth and adults from their use.
2. According to the book “After Tobacco” Lifelong smokers lived, on average, 10 years less than lifelong never smokers.
B. Educating younger generations is vital to the elimination of smoking in order for our society to not repeat its previous terminal.
1. According to the article “Cigarette smoking and lung cancer: pediatric roots” studies have shown that male and female smokers who started smoking before the age of 15 years had double the risk of lung cancer of those who started at age 20 years or more.
2. “I don’t want to be one of those people who are in their 60s who have an artificial voice box, it’s not good.” (High motivation smoker, Male, Age 22, Pg. 8).
Conclusion
I. Summary: Don’t be one of the many victims of cigarettes and instead I encourage you to take action on making the best decision.
II. Closure: Today I have talked to you about the negative effects smoking imposes on your body, how educating people about this harmful habit will prevent more deaths and my resolution to this problem. Ending smoking habits is a cause that I truly believe in because of the detrimental effects I have personally witnessed cigarettes bringing in the lives of my loved ones. When it comes to cigarettes, ignorance is not bliss, and I believe that if the public continues to be enlightened of how cigarettes poisons countless aspects of both your physical and emotional life they would want to stay clear of this product. It is the responsibility of youth today to continue to push for a tobacco-free society in order to encourage and perpetuate a healthy lifestyle for all generations to come.

Some People Enjoy Change, and They Look Forward to New Experiences. Others Like Their Lives to Stay the Same, and They Do Not Change Their Usual Habits. Compare These Two Approaches to Life. Which Approach Do You Prefer? Explain Why.

...they look forward to new experiences. Others like their lives to stay the same, and they do not change their usual habits. Compare these two approaches to life. Which approach do you prefer? Explain why. Some people like to live in the same house, have the same job and habits all their lives. However, others aspire to changes and new experience. Personally, for the several reasons, which I will explain bellow, I prefer the first approach to life. First of all, changes in one's life bring many benefits. One tries new things, gains new knowledge and experience. I think it is great because without changes life becomes boring. I always try to make changes in my life. Moreover, when I feel that my life is boring I do not feel well about it. I feel like I spent those days for nothing. I did not do anything exiting, I learnt nothing interesting and I just waisted my time. Second of all, people need changes. Furthermore, we need obstacles to overcome and reach our goals. I believe that changes make us stronger, more persistent, more self-confident, and more patient. Also, I feel that all people who succeeded in life like changes and new experience because it is impossible to be the best at some field without perfecting the present knowledge and gain new experience. People catch every opportunity to learn more and change their life for the best. From the other side, people who like their lives to stay the same are very permanent. They have the same job all their life, the...

Understanding Bitterness and Steps to Freedom

...sick and unable to move forward, because ‘the heart knows its own bitterness’ (Prov. 14:10). Knowing what bitterness is to begin with takes power from the enemy and starts the process of overcoming bitterness. Releasing the bitterness is possible toward self, God and others. To achieve this release (freedom) of bitterness includes discovering the root of it by working through blockages and dealing with self and God so the cancer and poison of the soul (Unforgiveness) can be eradicated from the soul and forgiveness can be achieved and received. With understanding and support, many can overcome these obstacles to overcome their bitterness leading to spiritual freedom so moving forward is possible. Bitterness In English, the concept of bitterness comes from the idea of something that has a sharp or unpleasant taste. We speak of something being bitter if it causes grief or is hard to bear; "a bitter defeat", "bitter failure". We also speak of a "bitter loss" when someone's death has caused great grief. Bitterness in speaking of personal experience is when something was unpleasant, undesirable, or when something bad was unexpected. Bitterness can lead to many to become ‘stuck’ into a trap that keeps them from moving forward in their lives. Abuse is a root that runs deep in bitterness. Many become rebellious or accommodating to the abusers thinking that someday things may change. Bitterness is one of the most crushing mental problems in a person's life. When a Christian is bitter...

The Story of an Hour

...Brently, still lives, she know that all hope of freedom is gone. The crushing disappointment kills Mrs. Mallard. Published in the late eighteen hundreds, the oppressive nature of marriage in "The Story of an Hour" may well be a reflection of, though not exclusive to, that era.       Though Chopin relates Mrs. Mallard's story, she does not do so in first person. Chopin reveals the story through a narrator's voice. The narrator is not simply an observer, however. The narrator knows, for example, that Mrs. Mallard, for the most part, did not love her husband (paragraph 15). It is obvious that the narrator knows more than can be physically observed. Chopin, however, never tells the reader what Mrs. Mallard is feeling. Instead, the reader must look into Mrs. Mallard's actions and words in order to understand what Mrs. Mallard feels.       Mrs. Mallard is held back in her marriage. The lines of her face "bespoke repression" (paragraph 8). When Mrs. Mallard learns of her husband's death, she knows that there will "be no powerful will bending her" (paragraph 14). There will be no husband who believes he has the "right to impose a private will upon a fellow creature" (paragraph 14). Mrs. Mallard acknowledges that her husband loved her. Brently had only ever looked at Mrs. Mallard with love (paragraph 13). This information implies to the reader that Brently is not a bad man; he simply believes that it is his right, and perhaps his obligation as a husband, to...

Why Choose Science

...Science – especially biology has always interested me, walking out of a class and feeling more educated in a subject truly is a great feeling. Knowing that when I study I’m studying the world around me, what makes up our world and how we can better understand it. My goal with science isn’t ‘what is life about’ but more ‘what makes up life’. Learning about how we evolved to how everything’s gas waste products help to create a greenhouse effect in order for us to keep on living. I cannot imagine a time when science was outlawed, science is amazing and is slowly but surely answering the mysteries of life, and I definitely want to be on board helping the human race delve into the depths of it! I was never given opportunity to study chemistry at the high school level, so learning about the Molecules in different chemical reactions and how they react when a another element is added is fascinating to say the least. I’m excited for what this year has to offer and look forward to expanding my knowledge of this scientific world. The Difference Between Monotony and Boredom…

...What is boredom and what causes it? Boredom is a mental weariness, dullness, dreariness, tedium, and a monotony. Boredom is experienced when a person lacks activity or when a person becomes uninterested in tasks that surround them. A person who has been on a job for an extended period of time often becomes bored by the repetition of doing the same thing for such a long period of time. When a person becomes bored from doing the same type job, they lose interest in what they are doing and they need a challenge to excite them and fill their need to relieve their boredom. Boredom causes people to look for something that will satisfy them and bring them a feeling of fulfilment. Anything that becomes repetitious, causes people to become bored and suffer a lack of interest in whatever they are doing. Our minds require change or we become dull and unable to take an interest in functioning in a proper manner. Boredom causes us to have difficulty concentrating on our current activities because they have become a monotony to us. Boredom occurs in people when they are doing something they have to do and are sick and tired of doing it. People who suffer from boredom are seeking stimulation and a challenge because they are tired of the same monotony and they are finding it harder and harder to perform their tasks. Many people suffer from different types of boredom, i.e., when they are not allowed to do something we desire to do; when they are doing something they are being forced to do;...

...Family; One 6 letter word that means so many things. These are the people who aren't here for you all of the time, no matter what; the people who are supposed to love&support you throughout your lives. These are the people you have some of the best times with, that will never ever be forgotten. Family is Staring down at this photograph from Christmas 1999 brings back so many memories. My whole family looks so happy. all of us bundled up in our big jackets from the cold weather outside, sitting by the fireplace, all looking like we just love each other, we are so glad to be around each other celebrating with each other, and it is so noticeable we all care for each other. We were so glad to just all be able to spend this day with each other. I remember this day so well. I look forward to this day every year! Christmas night is always celebrated at my Pawpaw’s house. My grandparents were divorced, so we always celebrate our Christmases separately. I love Christmas with my grandma, but I just cannot wait to go to my Pawpaw’s house that night! He always cooks the best meals. For a white man, he can cook a pretty mean Mexican dish of any kind. Mexican food is just part of the tradition! It would not be the same without it! Other than his awesome food, he always gives the best presents, of course. They may not even be the nicest gifts in the world, but they are all sentimental. We always get a box full of chocolate covered cherries and a pack of snickers. Now tell me who would...

...such as when we’re young and we learn to tie our shoelaces, a life skill that we end up dependant on. Or bad forms, somewhere along the lines we may fall ill to a life threatening disease like cancer. Sometimes our Journeys can cause us pain and heartbreak, but those are the things that help us make decisions and move forward, our journeys make us who we are. As soon as we are born we begin our journey. We’re thrust into life without knowing anything but are eventually taught the life skills we need. We are taught how to walk, talk and make the right choices, all very important aspects within our lives. In turn the skills we are taught help us move forward meaning we can learn new things. These new skills help shape the decisions we choose to make. If we didn’t have these skills moving forward would be difficult. Our physical journeys would be a struggle if we weren’t able to talk and our emotional ones would be unhappy if we weren’t able to communicate. In the film look both ways many of the characters are forced to make changes in their lives after going through different eye-opening experiences. It’s the experiences we go through that really help move our journeys forward. They change our outlook on life. Whether they are good or bad they make us think and change the way we do things. For example fighting an illness, we can choose to give up or we can choose to fight. Whichever one we choose it will change our life. We can give up and end our journey or we can fight and live...

...When you come to a point in your life when you’re faced to make significant choices or changes you are entering a new cycle of learning. Because of the depths of its outcomes this type of learning is known as transformational. The four stages of transformational learning are recognizing the problem, confronting it, finding the solution, and integrating a new perspective and a new set of assumptions into your life. These stages are often stressful and overwhelming. I have experienced transformational change 4 years ago. The situation I was unfortunately faced with was the death of my husband. I was more or less in denial for a while of the problem. After sometime passed I sat down and thought to myself I have to face this, the biggest reason was for my daughter. I knew that I had to carry on with my life not just for myself but for her as well. After sitting down and realizing this isn’t going away and it’s not a bad dream I knew I had to confront the situation with all I had. This was not easy. I never thought I would have to confront such a problem. By confronting it I found even though it was painful it was helpful. I knew that until I confront this I can’t fix it. After what seemed took forever I came up with not necessarily a solution to what had happened but I figured out what I’m going to do from here on out. Moving forward was my biggest plan I knew there’s no going back and no point of dwelling on the past. I also found a way to handle the grief in a better way by joining...

Reflection Paper on Death and the Power of God

...wonder why this is so? Do people mostly fear the way that they will die? Do they feel as if they haven’t accomplished everything they have wanted to in their life? I feel these things attribute to the fear that people have with death. There are several examples of death throughout the Bible. Thousands died from diseases, crimes, and committing sins which they were instructed not to do. One example of this is one of the Ten Commandments, thou shall not kill. So why is there so much murder that takes place throughout the Bible and in our world today? Do people not understand the magnitude of this commandment? I cannot attest to witnessing a murder myself but have seen several news reports on them. In fact the news is normally scattered with terrible news of death and murderers. Life is such a precious gift given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ they think it is something to which they show little value. One day, hopefully, more individuals will value life and the murdering that happens throughout God’s creation will come to an end. One of the greatest fears associated with death is how they might die. I’m sure billions of individuals who are no longer living thought to themselves, how will I die? Whether it is by natural causes, burning to death, or drowning, we have all thought of how we might leave this life. I myself have had close neighbors that have experienced these...

Examples Of Grit In Holy Wars And Glory

...What does it mean to have Grit? The definition for Grit is “courage and resolve; strength of character.” But to have “True” Grit You have to be able to just look forward and go forward not being a coward, but by pushing past your limit. Which can be seen in True Grit, John Brown’s Holy Wars, and in Glory. A good example is in the book True Grit there are many examples of Grit, for example when she was trying to go into the Territory with Rooster and LaBoeuf they left her and she crossed the river. “We hit the river running and Blackie snorted and arched his back against the icy water…” (pg. 118) Mattie crossing the river shows that she has True Grit and isn’t afraid to go past the point of no going back no matter what happens later on, whether she falls in a snake pit or not. Which is what happened to her to her it didn’t matter at the time because she didn't look at the consequences of her actions, but just looked at her goal while remaining unfazed....

Nature vs Nurture

...The start of this paper I think the best place to look is to the bible for what it says about our human nature as well as how nurturing plays a part inside the life of a person. When we look to the bible for understanding of human nature we are lead to see that our human nature is one of sin and death. Looking at Romans 8:13 for an example of this to quote part of it “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die” this tells us that if we live by our human nature that it will only lead to death. However if we finish reading the verse it also says “but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” this gives us hope that if we live by the Spirit there is hope in life. Furthermore we can see answers for how nurturing plays a key part inside our lives. Inside the bible we can see a lot of examples of what the bible says about nurturing a child to adult to bring them up right and proper. The best example I have found is inside Ephesians 6:4 to quote it says “bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord”. This is a great example of how to raise a kid inside a household. Moving forward to develop an answer to the first question on my opinion on the idea of the whole argument of Nature vs. Nurture took me on a road that really has left me with more questions than answers. What I have to say about this topic is based upon a lot of my personal experiences with addiction as much as with other addicts. To say out...
