Community-based Organizations and Servant Leadership

Abstract
This work will examine the framework of community-based nonprofit organizations and explore characteristics and challenges that affect their relevance and sustainability. It will also reference the key tenets of servant leadership as initially described by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 and describe how principles of servant leadership might effectively be applied to community-based nonprofit leadership, board governance and volunteerism.
.

Nonprofit organizations are an integral part of life; they operate to provide public benefit rather than serving their own special interest. A large percentage of nonprofits are community-based and especially vulnerable to the volatile nature of the economy and labor market, despite providing services and aid to the very segments also affected by those factors. Limited resources also restrict a small nonprofit’s ability to attract and retain talent capable of creating, sustaining and effectively achieving a viable vision for the nonprofit. By utilizing the tenets of servant leadership, community-based nonprofits may have an opportunity to tap into, and effectively develop, local talent that has an innate desire to serve the community. The principles of servant leadership are a natural fit for leadership framework in community-based organizations due to the innate nature of one serving the community in which they reside or work.

Three Pillars

...Three Pillars of the College of Business Servant Leadership, Entrepreneurial Spirit and Innovation Grand Canyon University: Introduction to Graduate Studies in the College of Business The three pillars of the College of Business are servant leadership, entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. The first one that I am going to discuss is servant leadership. Servant Leadership According to Robert Greenleaf, the term servant leadership “involves putting people and ethical considerations intentionally ahead of short term institutional or personal self-interest.” The article that I wrote about in my reference assignment was Servant Leadership, 2.0 .This article discussed the business community and how it is embracing servant leadership. The ten tables of servant leadership. The ten tables are, listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people & building communities. (Spears, L.) These ten characteristics have been the foundation for servant leadership scholarship for more than 30 years. According to Barbuto and Wheeler (2006) there are five leadership factors. These factors are altruistic calling, emotional healing, persuasive mapping, wisdom, and organizational stewardship. “Sendjaya, Sarros, and Santora (2008) identified six dimensions of servant leadership, which are voluntary subordination, authentic self, covenantal relationship, responsible morality, transcendent spirituality, and transforming...

Women Leadership Challanges

...the study, and organization of the Study. 1.1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Generally, of the various leadership styles no other leadership style has a deeper or stronger historical base than servant leadership. The concept of servant leadership can be traced through passages dating back to the 4th century B.C., most notably passages documented from Lao-Tzu who lived in China 570 B.C. (Brewer, 2010). However, the contemporary study of servant leadership may be traced to the groundbreaking work of Greenleaf (1977). The model of servant leadership, as proposed by Robert Greenleaf (1977) seems especially well suited to providing employees with the empowerment and participatory job characteristics that are related to both employee and customer satisfaction. Servant-leadership represents a model of leadership in which the leader assumes a supportive, service orientated role among stakeholders and followers (Greenleaf, 1977). The fundamental concept of servant leadership is placing others before self and accordingly servant leaders care about the people that work for them, other person’s agendas come before their own and commitment to service comes first. The servant leader serves by building the skills of followers, removing obstacles, encouraging innovation, and empowering creative problem solving (Spears, 2004). Servant Leadershipis an understanding and practice of leadership that places the good of those led over the self-interest of the leader. Servant leadership promotes the...

Leadership

...REGENT UNIVERSITY The Understanding and Practice of ServantLeadership Servant Leadership Research Roundtable – August 2005 Larry C. Spears President & CEO The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? —Robert K. Greenleaf The mightiest of rivers are first fed by many small trickles of water, and an apt way of conveying my belief that the growing number of individuals and organizations practicing servant-leadership has increased from a trickle to a river. Servant-leadership is also an expanding river, and one which carries with it a deep current of meaning and passion. The servant-leader concept continues to grow in its influence and impact. In fact, we have witnessed an unparalleled explosion of interest and practice of servant-leadership in the past fifteen years. In many ways, it can truly be said that the times are only now beginning to catch up with Robert Greenleaf’s visionary call to servant-leadership. The idea of servant-leadership, now in its fourth decade as a concept bearing that name, continues to create a quiet revolution in workplaces around the world. This article is intended to provide a broad overview of the growing influence this inspiring...

Comtemporary Business

...1. Analyze and describe the founding leader(s), leadership style, and major business principles of a profit-oriented entrepreneurial approach in which the primary goal is to provide a product or service to consumers and to make a profit. According to Boone (2011), profits represents “rewards for businesspeople who take the risks involved in blending people, technology, and information to create and market want-satisfying goods and services.” Entrepreneurship is the “willingness to take risks to create and operate a business to achieve success in the marketplace and earn those profits” (Ibid., pp. 6). Profits are the central focus of any business; a company could not survive without it; Leon L. Bean was one of those people. Leon L. Bean, named by Fortune Magazine, as “1of 200 best entrepreneurial for 2011” (Gale Encyclopedia, Und.). An avid outdoorsman, Leon Bean started out by creating a comfortable, functional boot for exploring the Maine woods. His idea came as a result of him returning from a hunting trip with cold, damp feet. While Bean had to refund money on “90 of the first 100 pairs of shoes, when the shoes developed cracks” (Ibid., Und.), it did not stop him; it led to the creation of “the Maine Hunting Shoe” which changed outdoor footwear forever and began one of the most successful family-run businesses in the country (Ibid., Und.). Treating customer well became a “hallmark of Bean’s business strategy; guaranteeing his product to give perfect satisfaction in every...

Ethical Leadershio

...examine leadership behaviours especially Ethical Leadership as it impacts the third sector organizations’ performance. This chapter is comprised of reviewed literature regarding leadership, ethical leadership and the third sector organisations. Specifically, this chapter will be broken down into (a) Leadership (b) leadership behaviours (c) ethical leadership in the Third Sector (d) Organisation Performance (e) the impact of ethical Leadership in the third sector’s performance. 2.1 LEADERSHIP Leadership is one of the world’s oldest preoccupation. The understanding of leadership has figured strongly in the quest for knowledge (Bass 1990). Purposeful stories have been told through the generations about leaders’ competencies, ambitions, and shortcomings; leaders’ rights and privileges; and the leaders’ duties and obligations. A review of relevant literature has uncovered many different definitions of leadership. Leadership remains one of the most relevant aspects of organizational context (Nwokocha 2011). For more than five decades ago, the term leadership has been a researchable topic. Mostly, the research work focuses on issues of quality of leadership, ability of a leader, or leadership effectiveness, or leadership styles (Daft 2008, Bass 1990, Erez et al 2001 & Yukl 2006) Stogdill (1974, p. 259) stated that “ there are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept” and Yukl (2006) highlighted that leadership is a...

Leadership

...Introduction My definition of leadership is having a lasting impression on others, and not only inspiring them, but making a physical difference in their lives (hopefully in a good way). To have this ability to make impressions and differences, you need communication skills. One who cannot communicate well will never be a leader. A leader must know how to speak so his ideas are understood in the correct way. The next aspect of effective leadership is the ability to make decisions to change, and not always stick to the status quo. What good are leaders who are afraid of change? Another aspect of leadership is the ability to handle failure, because this is an aspect of leadership whether we want to believe it or not. My experiences in life have greatly influenced my definition of leadership. Throughout my career and life I have had a chance to experience different leadership styles and theories exhibited by different people. I have learned to use the good and not use the bad when dealing with followers. Different people and different situations require different approaches, as well as different styles and theories. The theories I will explore in my research that has also influenced my thinking on leadership and leaders are Transformational Leadership, Leader-Member Exchange Theory, and Servant Leadership. Philosophy Transformational leadership is a leadership style that I admire and hope to use effectively when I return to work. “Transformational leaders integrate...

The “Blairing” of the Edges Third Sector and the Third Way Barriers to the Fulfilment of Expectations of and from Voluntary Sector Organisations Under a New Labour Government

...The “Blairing” of the Edges Third Sector and the Third Way Barriers to the fulfilment of expectations of and from voluntary sector organisations under a New Labour government Dissertation for MSc Voluntary Sector Policy & Administration (SA475) June 2000 Department of Social Policy London School of Economics & Political Science Synopsis Voluntary organisations as a vehicle for volunteering, for active citizenship and for a healthier, civil society have become an important of New Labour’s thinking. The voluntary sector is also identified as a vehicle through which government priorities may be more effectively addressed in particular, measures to address social exclusion[1]. This dissertation considers the current state of the relationship between the voluntary sector and the Government and seeks to identify barriers to the fulfilment of this political vision in the context of one Department’s work.[2] The study discusses the findings in the light of the emerging thinking on the Third Way and the substantial body of work on contracting - the medium through which much of the relationship is conducted in the case of the DfEE. Whereas there is an apparent willingness to consider measures to overcome recognised barriers, there appears to be confusion about the extent to which goal deflection may have damaged the legitimacy of voluntary sector organisations. There is therefore uncertainty about which part of the voluntary sector (service delivery organisations, the community sector...
