I. Things I remember about my childhood a. Meet my parents b. A broken home c. A Positive role model II. A life of service d. In the Army now e. Hard times III. Marriage and my family now f. Married with children g. The wonder years h. Tomorrow and beyond IV. Final thoughts and conclusion

In retrospect the journey that my life has taken from childhood to the present, has been a whirlwind of ever-changing dreams and desires. I’ve gained an appreciation of who I am today, the factors that have motivated me to continue, and a deeper understanding of the path I would like to follow as I pursue future goals. In my development I believe the foundational building blocks of who I am can be traced to the nurturing that I received from multiple parental sources within my environment. I was born a black child and raised initially within a dysfunctional poor family environment. The very nature of my parent’s genetic make-up with alcohol issues, abusive tendencies and intellectual differences. Leads me to believe my life should have turned out much differently if genetic nature was more at play in my development. There for I think that for the moment I feel that nature along with the nurturing environment shaped who I am today. I feel my life is a text book argument for nature vs. nurture.
My life’s journey from birth to present day has been an exhilarating, ever-shifting tumultuous trek. I was born the only child of a Southern–Baptist couple; my father was a high school dropout while my mother was a college graduate. With this information and understanding nature vs. nurture it could be easily said that my life could have gone in any direction when it comes down to my educational future. Based off of the understanding of nature it could be said that my father the high school dropout possessed weaker intellectual genes than my college graduate mother. But while my father was indeed a dropout his intelligence was far from below average. In fact he had a very keen since of understanding for the mechanics of the world around him and how things worked. While on the other hand my mother was a college graduate who excelled in every manner of exhortations. Both my parent’s education not withstanding provided me more with a since of accomplishment through hard work more than by manner of what they each accomplished in life.
The very fact that I was destined to attend public school because of my parent’s low financial standing would have little impact on my educational development. The reason I can make such a bold statement in regards to my development is because throughout my school years my mother single handedly guided my educational development through nurturing No matter what subject I was having trouble in my mother would garner me one on one time with my teachers or find someone well educated in the subject if she could not. I remember many times that I was loaded into the family car and driven to a teacher’s home and my mother would wait in the car while I was individually schooled by the teacher in whatever subject I was deficient. Despite my parent’s inability to provide me with education in a higher level teaching institution my mother took steps to provide me with addition educational benefits when I needed them. Thus it can clearly be seen that my mother would go to great lengths to insure I was in the proper environment (nurture) to receive strong cognitive educational development. This also supports the statement made in Adult Development and Life Assessment book. Our environment plays a huge role in how we develop, what pathways are open to us, and which are closed. The multiple influences of the environment (nurture) over many years are largely responsible for shaping us into the unique individuals that we are (Witt & Mossler 2010) Section 2:10.

My father was a very heavy drinker and would often times become abusive to both I and my mother. I feel my mother put up with the abuse simply to keep the family together, a choice that almost became fatal for her. It was at the advice of her mother that she finally got out of the abusive marriage and continued to raise me on her own. It is believed by many that a predisposition to disorders and personalities are handed down genetically. Personality is also significantly influenced by heredity. For example, Kagan and Snidman (1991) found that about 15% of children followed in a longitudinal study seemed to have been born with a predisposition for shyness, making them unusually anxious about unfamiliar objects, places, and people. Rothbart (2004) reports that shy children often have shy parents. Here you would be correct to question whether nature or nurture is at work (Witt & Mossler 2010) Section 2:10.
I did not start drinking until after the death of my mother, I do not think I would have started drinking otherwise simply because I had strong family influence directing me. I truly believe my drinking was a combination of coping mechanisms and a direct result of peer pressure not a genetic predisposition passed on to me by my parents. During my adolescent years I was not without a positive strong male influence in my life despite the absence of my father. My mother’s brother my uncle did everything to ensure I had positive guidance even good discipline when needed. During my late teenage years while my mother was battling cancer my uncle went through a nasty. This greatly reduced the amount of time and direct influence he had in my life. Following my mother’s death I was attempting to cope with the enormous change my life had just gone through with limited parental guidance. The reductions in positive parental environmental input in my life lead to an increase in negative environmental inputs in the form of peer pressure. This is a point where it could be argued that in the absence of a positive nurturing environment I was driven by natural genetic traits inherited form my parents.
I do not possess the clinical ability to completely dismiss the argument for genetic predispositions but I feel personally that my environmental influences played a much greater role at that stage of my development. My uncle moved in with me following his divorce and the impact he had on my life was immediately evident. I reduced my level of drinking considerably; I had dropped out of high school following my mother’s death but my uncle persuaded me to return to school. With the positive nurturing back in my life I went on to graduate with honors. Thus proving to me that my environment won out over my genetic predispositions to drink and be classified as intellectually inferior by genes passed on by my parents.
I chose a life of service in the military before my mother’s death. I did so in an effort to try and help provide for her during her failing health. I chose the Army because my uncle the positive male influence in my life was a soldier and there was a part of me that wanted to be just like him. I served two years in the Alabama Army National Guard along with my uncle who now not only influenced me in the home but also had a great deal of positive influence in my early military career. Shortly following my twentieth birthday I expressed a desire to strike out and live life on my own. Now my family relationship with my uncle had by this time undergone enormous change. I very much emulated him in my daily life from the very way I dressed to how I spoke to people; I even shared in his world view. His influence in my life had become so intense that I asked him if I could refer to him as my dad, of course he agreed as long as he could call me son. I left home February 1993, after laterally transferring from the National Guard to Active duty service. I was shipped off to Fort Hood, Texas, for my first assignment thus removing me from the direct positive nurturing environment of my home.

The effects of the removal from that positive environment were apparent almost immediately; the first impact being my financial decline. Having freedom to buy what I wanted without any oversight was disastrous for me. At the behest of my peers I spent money on things I did not need and often people I did not know. The only reason I did not go hungry or live in a card board box was the fact that the Army was providing me with 3 daily meals and a bed to sleep in. Otherwise I was leaving as a destitute and often found myself calling home asking my dad for money. After several months of begging and receiving funds I was cut off financially by my dad. I was instructed to take finance classes and stop hanging around the wrong crowd of people, neither of these pieces of advice I followed.
I could not wait to start drinking again I wanted desperately to look and act like my older soldier comrades. Two day following my twenty-first birthday I woke up in Darnell Army Community Hospital suffering from severe alcohol poisoning. A direct result of Binge drinking, which is defined as elevating blood alcohol levels to .08 or higher over a 2-hour period, is especially dangerous. I allowed the influences of my peers and my current life style of living to drive my decision to drink to excess. Through continued binge drinking I became addicted to alcohol and cigarettes from those addictions I experimented with other controlled substances. Among youths who smoke cigarettes, the rate of illicit (illegal) drug use is over 9 times higher than among those who didn’t smoke. Those data do not mean that cigarette smoking leads to drug use. They simply show that the kind of person who smokes at a young age is more likely to also use drugs. Personality factors may be more important than the actual behavior of lighting up (Witt & Mossler 2010) Section 3:1.

Due to increased peer pressure from negative influences I convinced myself that I no longer needed the positive influence of my dad telling me how to live my life or tell me who I am. The new environment that I chose to immerse myself in was absolutely counterproductive to my young adult maturation and adult development. I surrounded myself with other lost and confused young adults who were searching for the identity they did not have. I was among the most fortunate of my peer group that lived this most dangerous life style of substance abuse. I married when I was twenty-eight, to a young woman who shared in my life style. The combination of two destructive personalities normally does not end well and my failed marriage was no exception.
Despite several years of physical neglect and mental decline a direct result of my life style I was able to overcome my addictions. I restored the broken relationship I had with my dad and started following his advice on how to begin restoring my broken life. Being that I did grow up in a very Christian environment it is of no real surprise I was directed by my dad to return to church. I removed myself from the negative daily influences the surrounded me and reacquainted myself with more positive surroundings. The change was instant in me, being around young adults who wanted something out of life pushed me to desire something out of life for myself. While the withdrawal form that life style was difficult it was extremely rewarding to look back and see I was free from that part of my life. I would like to say I owe the all success to the nurturing environment that I was in but I’ll interject here and point out that while my father was addicted to alcohol he was to my knowledge never addicted to any other controlled substances. So my biological father’s predisposition to drink may have had something to do with that time of my development. But it was again the nurturing that won out over nature.
While stationed in Fort Stewart, Georgia I met another soldier who soon became my wife. Not long after the marriage I became dad too her children from her previous marriage. Due to possibility of both I and my wife deploying and leaving our children, my wife opted to leave military service. To support my family, I continued to serve in the army working on civilian and military education. My greatest achievement by far has been my role as a dad. My happiest moments have been those shared with my wife and children. We have developed strong bonds through many extremely challenging times in our life. My family has been a key contributor to my motivation for excellences; they have inspired me to always do more than merely achieve success. I strongly agree with the text found in the Adult Development and Life Assessment book where it is stated that. We see a strong correlation between a richer set of life experiences and performance in school at all levels, greater acceptance of others who are different, better understanding of the world, and better preparation for the opportunities that life offers. Education has a high correlation with prosperity and lifetime earnings. As an adult learner, you are back on that path now, perhaps after overcoming many obstacles. As noted in the section "Self-Esteem," you should feel proud (and your family should feel proud of you) for finding a way to go back to school so that you can achieve your dreams and for the work that you do in taking each step down that path (Witt & Mossler 2010) Section 1:3. I know that my family is very proud of my steps taken to complete my degree. That bust to my self-esteem makes achieving the goals I’ve set for myself and my family that much more achievable. While I am knocking on the door of middle adulthood it seems to have arrived on me all of a sudden I feel like one moment I was twenty and now I am forty. Truthfully I know the arrival was not that sudden I did not notice gray hair until I was thirty-eight. I have not seen any major physical declines in my body due to daily exercise and highly active life style. I have never had issues with my weight but I have read that countless articles that show reducing your weight to a healthy level pays big dividends physically, emotionally, and socially. Knowing that I ultimately want to live longer in order to further enjoy time with my family I plan on taking steps to improve my diet along with the exercise I enjoy. In the next three years I will retire from active duty military service with twenty-five years total time in service and twenty-three years active duty. All time that I can assure you I’ll be honored to have served with some very interesting, often fascinating and truly remarkable people. I look very much forward to my life after military service, one where I will contribute to my community in a different way. The prospect of earning my college degree is both somewhat frightening and exhilarating; knowing that the accomplishment will be due to my personnel efforts. I also look forward to passing on the value of a good education on to my children. Who am I? If someone had asked me this question fifteen years ago I could not have answered it with true conviction or real honesty. Today however thanks to the efforts of the man I call dad I know who I am. I think largely because I know where I came from. I am a man in control of my life; I have lived through personnel tragedies and reclaimed my identity. I am a soldier who through a life of service has come to greatly appreciate the Nation I serve. I am a father a dad to my children who look up to me for guidance and direction. I am a husband who looks forward to growing old with my wife. I am a believer and follower of Christ who enjoys sharing my love of the Lord with everyone. But most of all I am happy knowing that today I am who my God is shaping me to be. I am a man who by all accounts has been truly Blessed Beyond Measure.

The journey my life has taken has been anything but uninteresting, boring, dull, or tedious. No. My life has been a true whirlwind of discovery some good, some bad, but all necessary in the pursuit of finding out who I am. I was raised in a broken home but I was not subject to a broken environment I was provided love and support by multiple parental sources. Despite the poverty I lived in my mother ensured I was provided the best education possible. I was challenged by lost at a very young age despite the negative set back that proved to be in my life I was alternately provided positive reinforcement that countered the negative. My family Microsystems were a large influence on who I am today more so than my genetic make-up. I have taken control of the who I am and now use that control to insure I will continue to work on becoming the who I want to be. I know I have no clinical back ground that allows me to pass a physiological review on myself but I feel I was a product of a truly nurturing environment that overcame predispositions handed down by my parents. But I guess this is all very subjective and open to interpretation by the reader. I close by revisiting a statement I made earlier where I said “I’m in control of my life now.” I know that I can influence the forces around me for good with a Godly purpose and in doing so I can use those forces to propel me onward in the right direction. “Success is not given to us it is taken by us,” and I plan on taking my share of life’s successes today.

Nature and Nurture

...What is the nature versus nurture controversy? In your opinion, is nature or nurture a more important determinant in human behavior? Why? Provide support for your answer. As we all know, nature is the biological genetics which individuals inherited from their parents, and nurture is known as the environment in which we're raised. The nature-nurture controversy is a classic research between behavioral psychologists in which they did find “the source of the creation of human personality” (Genes and behavior, “n.d.”), including physical and behavioral traits, and given out a question: “What is the main influence on human - their genetics or their environment?” (Nature vs. Nurture Examples. “n.d.”). It's commonly known that people have a few particular physical traits as their parents by sharing the same DNA. But where do people find their interest for other behaviors like the preference of reading specific kinds of book, or their natural abilities? That's what the nature versus nurture controversy tackles (What does "nature versus nurture" mean?, “n.d."). Some scientist claim that nature plays an important role in this issue. For example, in a theory of attachment, Bowlby shows us the “views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival” (“Bowlby, J., 1969”). In addition, Chomsky also claims that “language is gained through the use of an innate language acquisition device” (“Chomsky, N.,1965”). However, other scientists opposed that environmental...

...Nature-Nurture Nature versus nurture is an issue that has been hotly debated for many generations. Because my family life was so disconjointed I have often wondered on what side of the argument my own personality formed. The thought that the way I am is because of genetics has always been a concept I struggle to accept as I lean more on the nature side of the argument as I see my personality formed more by the happenings in my life. I have recently met a few of my siblings for the very first time and found that we couldn’t be more different than if we were unrelated completely. Some professionals air on the side of nature some on nurture and some believe it is a complete combination of them both. Of the people who believe in nature, they believe that we are who we are because of our genetic makeup, while those who believe in nurture believe it is all in the experiences we have had in our lives, and last but not least the professionals that believe in the balance of the two believe that we have some hard wired elements to our personality while others are learned by our experiences. Pro-nature is based off of inherited traits that a person is born with. Pro-nurture means a person can develop traits through experience and one’s environment. Pro-nature perspectives concentrate on the genetic information with claims of that a person with certain genetics will be better than the next and come out on top. Pro-nurture perspectives...

...Nature or Nurture? Personality is the particular combination of emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual. It is the sound total o the multi-dimensionality of an individual. It is the sounding of one’s upbringing as a person. Personality is the reflection of how we are cared by our family, friends, government, society, etc. There are two factors that affect personality. These are nature and nurture. Many of us would try to look deep into ourselves and try to answer these following questions. Which is the most significant, nature or nurture? Which of the two most change my personality as a whole? What am I really? Nature is the genetic or biological component of an individual. This means that a person’s nature comes from its predecessors and the attitudes comes from its parents. Genes play a greater role in determining key personality traits like social skills and learning ability than the way we are brought up by our parents. Genetics were most influential on people's sense of self-control and also affected their social and learning abilities and their sense of purpose. Nurture is the social and environmental factors that affect the individual. This means that the environment affects how a person thinks and do. There are many people in this world wherein they where affected by the changes in society. Maybe it is because it is needed so that they can fit in or maybe they need it to be socially compatible with others. Behavior can be non-genetically...

...Being yourself, being who you are. When you hear those two lines you may think they mean the same thing but do they? Think about it, you were born into this world a tiny little baby with no ideas, or preferences, but as you grew you developed a personal identity, but did it really develop or was it in you to begin with. Such questions are what leads to the great debate of nature vs nurture. If you believe you were born already with a personality, then you take the side of nature. on the other hand if you believe that your personality developed based on influences in your life beginning when you were a child then you believe in nurture. Two totally different theories, both which are believed to make us who we are. Nature, the more scientific theory of the two, is the belief that hereditary traits found in our genes make us who we are, believable but not very convincing when we consider the theory of nurture. Human beings learn new things everyday, as soon as we come in to the world, our learning process begins. As a newborn baby, we slowly learn and adapt in order to survive in a new environment which is unlike that of our mothers wombs, our first environment in which we first grew, adapted to and developed in. The home environment parents and siblings play a huge role in determining personality. Influences from outside the family are also very important to the development of ones personality. But everything starts at home. One can't enjoy snowboarding or...

...genes that we have inherited from our parents. Therefore what makes us who we are? Many people would believe that we learn because of what we experience in life and others would argue that we are predestined because of our heredity. Both parties have piled up plenty of evidence to support their theory. Genes are the basis of our lives and as we grow the environment influences how our genes react and program our brains. “Genes are designed to take their cues from nurture. The more we lift the lid on the genome, the more vulnerable to experience genes appear to be. Ridley explains easily that genes are not puppet masters pulling the strings of our behavior (a common misunderstanding), but are puppets at the mercy of our behavior” (Mysterud). Nature vs. Nurture is still an ongoing controversy that psychologist cannot come to an agreement on. Nature deals with the inheritable factors while Nurture deals with the environmental factors that we grow up around in. Nature via Nurture by Matt Ridley explains that nature and nurture are both important factors that make a person who they are and who they become. Genes are the nature part of the human beings where we learn, how we think, and how we act. Ridley writes: Spradling 4 “Human nature is indeed a combination of Darwin’s universals, Galton’s heredity, James’s instincts, De Vries’s genes, Pavlov’s reflexes, Watson’s associations, Kraepelin’s history, Freud’s formative experience, Boas’s culture, Durkheim’s division...

Nature Nurture

...The historical debate regarding nature and nurture has been going on for years and is still unresolved. Many theorists believe what we have inherited and our genes, makes us the way we are and how we develop. Other theorists believe it is the way we are brought up and our experiences, that make us the way we are and how we develop. Physical The way we look can be argued to be mainly due to nature. The genes we inherit from our parents make the basis of we look. For example, people often say ‘Don’t you look like your father/mother?’ Genetic inheritance can determine our eye colour, whether we have straight or curly hair or how tall we will be. We can also inherit certain disease which can seriously impact on our health. However, we can make decisions on how we look and change our appearance. There are many different cosmetic procedures available to alter our appearance. How we live our life and the choices we make can also have an impact on how we look. For example, eating junk food and not exercising can lead to obesity. The environment we are brought up in and the experiences we have, can influence our health which contributes to physical development. An example of how nature and nurture affect our physical development is; we may carry genes that increase our risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but if we eat a healthy diet and get sufficient exercise, we may not develop the disease. The genes for characteristics we inherit are called genotypes. The actual express of these...

...Essay: Is it that each person’s attitude nature or nurture? Some people believe that the attitude of each individual depends in our environment, they develop what they see. And some of them believe that the attitude of a person is nature or what we call inborn attitude. But if you ask me if where of the two I believe, I’ll choose NURTURE because every person have a talent but this talent is not enough we need to develop more, that talent need a proper guidance of their guardian, trainer and etc. to make that talents perfect to the eye of other people. In this situation big possible that this person has a talent but need to develop. I have a childhood friend, she’s a girl who’s name Lea, actually she has a boyfriend but the time has come their relationship was end. The girl cried, got hurt, she didn’t know what she’s doing. Two years later after she’s moved on, she became a Lesbian as a childhood friend I asked her why did you do that? Why did you choose to become a Lesbian? She answered, because first I can’t accept that me and my boyfriend was broke up, so I thought wisely that if I’m become a Lesbian I didn’t get hurt again like before. So I think it’s good to me and I did. Second, I saw many Lesbians that their always happy with their love one’s so I just go with there. Anyway I think one of the reasons why some people adopt the attitude to their environment was from the parents or guardians if they guide seriously their kids they can’t adopt the attitude...

Nature and Nurture

...Nature and nurture are the two factors that determine human personality. First, the genetic code of a human being, which is unique and based on hereditary and other factors, will be an indicator of personality. For example, some very young babies will already clearly be "shy" or "extroverted". However, the personality of a baby will be vastly modified by a child's upbringing, and the way they are nurtured by his or her mother and father, or legal guardian. Nature • One example of the way nature affects a baby is brain disorders who are inherited, and which will affect personality. For example, psychological problems related to brain chemistry, such as schizophrenia, are believed to have a strong genetic component. These diseases will be present as mutated genes in a baby, and, over time, they will create behaviour problems that may manifest themselves as a child grows into adulthood. However, the way a child handles their genetic difficulties will be affected by the child's upbringing. Nurture • A child with a genetic disorder that affects personality will handle things better when they are loved, hugged, and well taken care of in the formative years. From babyhood, children require affection, warmth, intellectual stimulation, and respect in order to develop to their best possible potential. Children who lack nurturing in the formative years will suffer from issues, such as poor self-esteem, that affect their ability to socialize and make friends. Children who are...

According to the text through interaction with your parents, peers, and others, you learned how to get along with people, a developmental task called socialization. (Psychology Core Concepts, pg. 289) I believe that the genes you are born with have a certain amount of contribution to the person you become. Genes can only contribute so much it also has more to do with health issues other than psychological development. ...has are caused by nature or nurture. Meaning are the traits caused by genetics or caused by the environment that one lives in. There have been a number of studies done on individuals in order for researchers to find whether individual’s traits are brought about due to nature or nurture. With all of the studies that have been performed, it is still hard for researchers and scientist to pen-point if certain trails and characteristics are due to nature (the genetic aspect of an individual) or nurture (the environmental aspect of an individual). In 1979 a study began at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. This study is best known as the Minnesota Twins Study. This study was to see if twins that are reared apart, still have the same traits as if they were reared together. Over the years of this study, it has been proven that there are psychological traits that appear in twins that are reared apart. (Bouchard, Jr., 1990) This study showed that there are natural traits between the twins, however they have also found that these sets of twins share some of the same traits when it comes to the nurture aspects of their raisings. When it comes to really know how one comes about having certain traits, this is something that scientist and researchers will continue to do future studies on. This is because an individual’s dispositional trails and other characteristics are created due to both nature and nurture. I say this because there is...

Nature vs Nurture

...Describe the basic elements of the nature-nurture controversy. The amount of influence that genes have on personality verses the influence of learning experiences is not only related to genetics but also psychology. The debate of nature- nurture controversy has been studied for over 130 years and is still being researched. “After studying many prominent English families, Galton concluded that intelligence is inherited- that nature, not nurture, is responsible for intelligence” (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2005, p. 278). Nature refers to an individual’s innate qualities. Genes is considered nature, the physical and personality traits determined by ones genes will always stay the same. The coding of genes determines an individual’s traits such as eye color, hair color, and height. Nurture refers to personal experiences. This refers to ones childhood and how they were raised. This debate will always be controversial. An individual’s traits are predetermined by their genes but life experiences are what shape a person. There have been many research studies completed regarding this debate with no conclusive results. Discuss what is controversial in the nature- nurture debate. Nature versus nurture is one of the most frequently debated issues among psychologists. The term was created by a British researcher Sir Francis Galton who studied the role of genes in intelligence. The debate is about the importance of an individual’s inherited qualities versus personal experiences in determining...

Nature vs Nurture

...Since the beginning of recorded time one has been told that ‘you have your mothers eyes’ or ‘You’re tall like your father’ and it has been accepted that humans inherit their appearance traits from their parents, however where does one get their talent for hockey, their intelligence, or their habits; does one learn these from their environment or were they programmed by genetics? Well this brings to light the age old debate of nature vs. nurture. The Nature and Nurture debate stems into many areas that make humans what they are, with one of those factors being their religion, and when examining religion it is found that nurture trumps nature in shaping the beliefs of oneself. Since the Ancient Egyptians and even before (Mesopotamians) religion and spirituality have existed, there has been a consensual acceptance that there is a God, and when one closes their eyes for the last time, they become one with God, or in some cases; the devil or the ‘netherworld’. Through those times and the times of the Catholic church according to world renowned psychologist Dr Olivera Petrovich; “Religion has become the natural state-it is now hard wired by families into babies brains, it is atheism that is learned”. She bases the mantra of religion being parental based on a study of four hundred B.C. children of different faiths, and many aged four-six Japanese children. When asking all of these children about their faith they all without any guidance from their parents say they believe in God;...

Nature Verses Nurture

...Nature Verses Nurture The discussion on the importance of heredity and environment in human development is not new. The nature verses nurture question has been debated for years (Psychology). Nurture side of the debate considers all the environmental influences on an individual after conception. While the nature side of the debate focus on nature that which is inherited, or know as genetics. The nature verse nurture discussion has been a part of the history of psychology that goes back to Francis Galton. Galton was influenced by the book, The Origin of Species written by his cousin, Charles Darwin. The Origin of Species has been criticized for over simplifying two theories of why a lifestyle of wealth, education and privilege seems to be passed on to biological children. Galton takes credit for the phrase in his English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture, first published in 1874. In this book he states that nature and nurture are, "a convenient jingle of words, for it separates under two distinct heads the innumerable elements of which personality is composed. Nature is all that a man brings with himself into the world and nurture is every influence that affects him after his birth” (p.12). Nature vs Nurture

...D1: Evaluate how nature and nurture may affect the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development for two stages of the development of the individual. Therefore you should select two stages, not necessarily in sequence. In order to evaluate you must consider the extent to which both nature and nurture influence the development of the individual. You could conclude by deciding which, if either, is the most influential. You should refer to research evidence in your evaluation. 50+ years Subject A is an elder lady who lives at home with her son and three grandchildren. She also has dementia; a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of the brain and its abilities. This includes problems with: memory loss, thinking speed, mental agility, language, understanding and judgement. In her situation, nature can have a negative effect on her physical development due to her disorder meaning that she can’t do much for herself. Things like cooking, showering or going shopping influences her development negatively as she can’t do anything herself. Nature vs. Nurture

...Nature vs. Nurture When looking at the nature and nurture debate, overall, I believe that our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions as humans are more strongly influenced by our environment, or nurtured. However, looking from the other point of view, that they are influenced by nature is also very plausible. In general, the reason that the nurtured makes most sense to me, is that the environment everyone grows up in (which is what influences us, obviously,) is so varied from person to person. What is natural to someone from Sweden, will not be natural to an individual in India, or the U.S., or Argentina. Another great example of variance, which is very applicable to me since I am training to be and working as a chef, is the principal of taste aversion. This was discovered by John Garcia along with other researcher. In taste aversion, foods can give certain people bad thoughts via taste or other consequences from the food, where as others may love the same particular food. When I cook food for friends or family, even though I love it, my sister may despise it, while my parents also enjoy it. There is a variance from person to person and thoughts, behaviors, and feelings can influence a persons rationale even though their environment has been relatively identical to another person with a different rational. The environment of each individual is different, so it makes most sense that individuals are nurtured as opposed to having a natural rationale. A type of social learning, is...
