TITLE: PREVALENCE OF OBESITY RELATED DISEASE IN MALAYSIA
1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

In June 2014, Malaysia has been rated as the highest among Asian countries for obesity. Science Advisor to the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, said new findings from British medical journal, The Lancet, showed that 49% of women and 44% of men in this country were found to be obese. "This is a very big problem because it has implication on diabetes, heart problem and others and our Prime Minister has also asked the global science and innovation advisory council to work on this," he told reporters. According to a new study published last month by The Lancet, Malaysia was rated heavyweight at 45.3% of its population, followed by South Korea …show more content…

1.4 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

1. To identify the effect of age on obesity.
2. To estimate the average weight of an overweight person.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF RESEARCH

This study is to find out contributing factors of obesity among Malaysian people which will be significant as to help the nation minimize obesity rating and thus helps in reducing chronic illness.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF RESEARCH

For our research studies, we carry out in the Central Zone area which only has three states that are Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan. Thus those who are middle age between 40 to 50 years will be …show more content…
It is because, among people who are living in urban area are people who are mostly consists of people that are always busy with their daily life such as work and do not care with their eating habits. Fast foods and soft drinks which are contains high calories are more accessible (Ismail, 2002) than those healthy foods because it was more faster and easier to find especially fast food restaurant that are provides delivery service or drive-thru. In the study published by the Sherina and Rozali (2004), it was said that the advancement of socio-economic over the year especially in the urban area had shown the changes in the lifestyles of people and that’s include their dietary patterns with the increase in the consumption fats, oils and carbohydrate and lead to the increase of the fat, based on the previous study by Tee, 1999. Recently, the issues related to obesity around the world are increasing as well as in our country. Obesity in Malaysia is growing in an alarming rate and it has associated with multiple problems. Ismail (2002) claimed that 20.7% of Malaysia’s adults are overweight with a BMI between 25.0 and 29.9. According to Asia Pacific Family Medicine, obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, is increased to a point where it is associated with certain health conditions or increased mortality (2009). Research on the economics of obesity typically assumes a “calories in, calories out” framework, but a richer weight production model separating caloric intake into carbohydrates, fat, and protein, has not been explored. To estimate the contributions of changes in macronutrient intake and physical activity to changes in population weight, we conducted dynamic time series and structural VAR analyses of U.S. data between 1974 and 2006 and a panel analysis of 164 countries between 2001 and 2010. Findings from all analyses suggest that increases in carbohydrates are most strongly and positively associated with increases in obesity prevalence even when controlling for changes in total caloric intake and occupation-related physical activity. If anything, increases in fat intake are associated with decreases in population weight.
