Observation In Dana Cordy's Play, Grass

The performer who I am going to be focusing on within this piece will be Dana Cordy, with the main focus being her work within the scene, Grass. The reason that I chose this scene to be the focus of this paper is that it was one of the few scenes which I was able to watch fairly consistently, which allowed me to better pick up any subtleties that the performers may have put into their work. Within this scene alone, Dana clearly demonstrated her observational skills and her overall contribution to the community effort. Dana’s observation was made extremely clear by the fact that within this scene she was always ready to say her next line but never overlapped with the other performer. Dana was also able to make good use of her actor tools within this scene, mainly through the use of voice and facial expression. When delivering her dialogue, Dana spoke with a hurried tone that suggested nervousness and even fear when she raised her voice. Additionally, she was able to use a sarcastic tone when her character was questioning the actions of the other character, which gave the audience some amount of insight to the relationship between the two characters, as sarcasm is something we generally use with people we are close to, and usually when we are upset with them. Her face usually conveyed a confused look which helped demonstrate to the audience that the character did not understand the motivations of the other and could not believe that they had taken the actions which they did. Overall, through her basic technique, Dana was able to work effectively with her scene partner to give the scene the urgency that it needed, while also communicating the character’s relationships as well as her character’s feelings towards the situation using her actor
