Running head: Observation of TGI Friday’s

Observation of TGI Friday’s

The TGI Friday’s is located not too far from my job. I have never dined at that particular location before, but heard from several people that it is a very lively on Friday’s. I figured TGIF on a Friday should be interesting. As I turned off of the main road I can see the huge TGIF sign reassuring me that I was heading in the right direction. The exterior of the building is really nice. Perfectly manicured lawn, shrubs, trees, and patches of yellow and purple flowers surrounds the brownish taupe structure. There are also several red and white stripped awnings all around the building, except the one by the main entrance, which is black with a red and white TGIF sign. I found a parking space not too far from the entrance. Above the entrance doors is a stripe that says “In Here, It’s Always Friday". I pulled open the F-shaped handles on the door and walked in.
As soon as I entered TGIF I was greeted by an elderly woman who offered me a menu and asked how many people would be seated. I accepted the menu and told her that I would prefer to sit in the bar area, so she told me to pick any seat I desired. I usually prefer to sit in booths, but for the purpose of this research, I decided it would be best if I was seated at the high top table in the corner, which gave me a view of the entrance, most of the bar area, some of the main dining area, and outside - that gave me the opportunity to see who was coming and going.
I arrived around 3:45 p.m. It was quiet and not really crowded, which was what I was hoping for. I wanted to get there before the Happy Hour (HH) crowd so I could get settled and take in the scene before it became packed. The majority of the customers that where there looked to be business professionals, taking some time out of their busy day to get away from the office. Some sat alone, eating, texting on their phones, on their iPads, or just observing the others in the establishment.
The inside of the restaurant was dimly lit. The bar stools were a red leather and the seats in the booths were black. The tables were a brown wood that matched the hardwood of the floors. There were red lamps hanging from the ceiling, giving the décor sort of a romantic feel. The walls were filled with pictures about TGIF, and various memorabilia. There were flat screen televisions surrounding the bar, and a few others were strategically placed on the corner walls of the bar area, allowing everyone to see a screen. The volume was on mute, yet every screen displayed Sport Center or CNN. There was lively, upbeat music playing in the background. The mix was very eclectic, a mix of R&B, pop, Hip Hop and soft Rock.
The atmosphere felt relaxing and comfortable and I wondered if I would feel the same way in an hour. As soon as I opened my laptop The Waitress came to take my order, and unknowingly became my first “victim”. I guess she was a typical waitress - trained to hide any negative attitudes or feelings she may have experienced that day in hopes of satisfying the customers. She was pretty, petite, and had very big breasts, or maybe it just looked extra big because of her frame. Her black shirt was buttoned all the way to the top and tucked into her black pants, and her red necktie swung from side to side with every step. She looked to be in her early 20’s and I wondered if she was a college student at the nearby University. She read off the specials to me and informed me that HH would be starting soon. There was nothing special about her demeanor and she didn’t seem overly friendly. I ordered two glasses of water with a lemon and pot stickers. I hate sitting in a restaurant alone so I asked my friend to join me and help me “people watch”. I also didn’t want to look like a creep, staring at people and typing.
I drew my attention back to the elderly lady who first welcomed me; I’ll call her The Greeter. She had fine grey hair, a thin frame and was a little hunched over. She was pleasant when she spoke and very complimentary of the guests when they entered; admiring their hairstyle, clothes, shoes, and kids. I noticed that she was not given a chair so she had to stay on her feet the whole time. Occasionally she would lean against the podium. Her shoes looked comfortable, but after a while, a person’s feet will eventually start to hurt if they are standing for a long period of time. She kept her head down as she worked on a crossword puzzle, only looking up when the door opened. As I looked at her, I wondered why she was still working and not at home with family or in a retirement community on a beach somewhere.
I then focused on the two ladies that were intently chatting in a corner of the main dining area. The lady whose back was turned to me, let’s call her Lady 1, had on a blue and white stripped “boyfriend” shirt from Express (I know because I have the same one) and her braids were in a ponytail. I had a much better view of Lady 2 who was seated directly across from Lady 1 and was dressed a lot less casual. She was clothed very business-like, light blue shirt, black suit jacket and I assumed she was wearing matching pants or skirt. Her hair was pulled into a high bun and her only jewelry was a silver watch on her left hand. Some papers were placed neatly in front of her and she would occasionally jot things down in her notepad. From what I can see, it looked like her interview was going well.
There was a very large group of people gathered closer to me, but in the main dining area. It looked like a work function for a special occasion, as there were gifts and cards on the table, as well as a half-eaten cake. The group seemed happy; they were laughing and joking with each other. There was one lady that stood out to me, I thought of her as The Party Pooper. She didn’t seem very engaged in the conversations amongst the group. She just sat there on her phone, either texting, scrolling social media, or playing a game. She occasionally nodded her head when spoken to and faked a smile when everyone else laughed. She looked like she rather be anywhere else but there! I guess I didn’t blame her. She appeared to be much younger than the rest her colleagues, and was probably only there because she had to be.
There was one particular man sitting alone in a booth, eating his meal, and not displaying any particular mood. Mr. Preoccupied didn’t seem happy or sad, just ate his food, looked at his phone, and stopped every now and then to play with the band on his wedding finger - he kept sliding it off and on. The Waitress came several times to ask him if he needed anything else, and he would just nod or shake his head in response, not even making eye contact. He smiled when his phone rang and actually looked happy as he answered the call. A few minutes into the call he clearly looked upset and started speaking loudly. I looked around to see if anyone else noticed, but there weren’t that many people around to pay him any attention. The bartender was chatting with a customer and The Work Group were still laughing and talking. I noticed that The Party Pooper was no longer there, maybe she left without me noticing. Mr. Preoccupied quickly hung up the phone, put some cash in the check holder that was already on the table and angrily walked out. I can see him hurrying to his car from my window, get into a BMW sedan (not sure which model) and sped off.
The Waitress came back with my order the same time my friend walked in. I waved TJ over before The Greeter could look up from her puzzle. She seemed very excited about my project and promised to assist me anyway she can. I assured her that her company was all I needed. We each ordered a Lemon Drop martini when the waitress came back and dove right into the pot stickers. There were delicious! TJ started to inform me of what a rough day she was having at work and how glad she was that she had an excuse to leave early. Despite her day, she was in good spirits.
As we were chatting I noticed this guy helping a female out of the passenger side of the car. He closed her door, and they held hands as they crossed the parking lot to TGIF. He also held the door open for her as they walked into the restaurant and I smiled to myself. It’s rare that I see a guy as young as him being so chivalrous. They spoke kindly to The Greeter and then took a seat at a booth in my section. I labeled them as The Young Couple since they looked to be in their late teens, maybe 18 or 19. They were both wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt. They slid into the same seat so they could be right next to each other instead of across from the other. She whispered something in his ear and then they started kissing. The Waitress looked annoyed, either by their open display of PDA or because she had to wait for them to stop so she could take their order. After what seemed like forever, the waitress interrupted them and introduced herself and the HH specials in a mechanical voice. The Young Couple didn’t seem to be embarrassed by what would normally be an awkward situation. They asked The Waitress to please come back since they didn’t have time to look at the menu. Go figure! I noticed she rolled her eyes as she walked away.
The crowd was starting to change. Lady 2 had left about 15 minutes ago and after jotting down some notes Lady 1 was packing up to leave as well. The Work Group was now down to two older men who were having a dispute over a game that was on one of the T.V. screens. It was funny listening to them go back and forth, taking jabs at each. They appeared to be close friends outside of work and it didn’t look like they were leaving anytime soon; a waitress had just brought them another round of beers. The Greeter shuffled past me and I hoped she was finally off the clock. I looked to see who was now in her spot and saw that she was replaced by two young girls. They looked friendly and ready to welcome the HH crowd.
The young girls did a great job with their reception at the door. I understood now why they needed two people at the door, it started to get congested fast. The Waitress came over (probably still wondering why TJ and I were still at her table), so we each ordered another Lemon Drop and some more food. Most of the crowd made their way to the bar area. There was a party of five guys that held my attention. Not because I was interested in any of them, even though they were dressed well and were attractive, but because they were too loud not to be noticed. One in particular was extremely annoying, so I will call him Mr. Obnoxious.
Mr. Obnoxious was the loudest in the group and probably in the whole restaurant. I could hear his entire conversation over everyone else’s combined chatter. He kept yelling at women that walked by him and tried to grab a couple by the hand. When The Waitress walked by he held her by the waist, but she didn’t seem that offended. He ordered (yelled) two rounds of Tequila shots for his whole table and even though he was finished placing his order, he didn’t let her go. When The Waitress finally pried herself out of his grasp, I noticed her top buttons were undone, revealing her cleavage. Her attitude seemed to have perked up as well; she was extra nice, extra smiley, and even flirted with the group of guys. I was shocked by how her demeanor changed. Was she really interested in these guys, did she want extra tips, or did she just enjoy the attention? Those were the thoughts that went through my head as I watched her “work”.
The time for me to leave was quickly approaching. I tried to signal to The Waitress that we were ready to leave, but she was too busy attending to the group of guys. TJ actually went up to her to ask for our check. I looked over to The Young Couple who were too involved in each other to pay anybody else any attention. The guys from the Work Group were still there, but now they were joined by a two ladies. They were still drinking beers and taking jabs at each other while the ladies sat there and smiled.
I enjoyed my time at TGIF and all the various personalities I observed. I was really affected by The Greeter and Mr. Preoccupied; they both lingered in my mind way after my observation of them was over. It bothered me that The Greeter still had to work at her age, far less at a job that required her to stand for hours at a time. Obviously, I do not know what her situation is, but it makes me sad. Even though she had a great attitude I can tell that she would rather be elsewhere. It made me review my finances for when I retire in hopes that I would have the choice of whether or not I want to work. I was also really affected by Mr. Preoccupied. His whole demeanor was depressing to me. I assumed by the way he played with his ring that he was having problems in his marriage. I really hoped everything worked out for him and I wondered if he made it safely to his destination, considering how rapidly he left.
I was a little worried when I first walked into the restaurant that I was not going to be able to observe enough to come up with the minimum amount needed for this paper. I was actually planning on visiting TGIF two days in a row, but after the first day I obtained a good amount of information. I enjoyed watching the diverse interactions and how people changed once they drank. That’s the most disconcerting part of this project, was to see how people changed once they had a few drinks in their system. That being said, I really enjoyed this project and I believe I am now more aware of individuals and how they behave in a certain environments – this being a casual dining restaurant.

Observation Paper

...Observatin Observation A good way to assess a situation between people is to observe their behaviors and actions in conversation. How did they interact with each other? Where their non-verbal messages intertwined with the verbal ones? Where they sitting closely or at a distance? The paper will cover one event where these types of observations were made during the duration of a one-hour dinner at a local restaurant. Background The local Applebee’s restaurant is one of a mixed environment of families’ mature and young adults. On a Saturday early evening, a man and woman were dining at the table next to my table where my family was enjoying dinner. The restaurant was moderately busy but not over capacity and sitting was still open for the patrons. The waitress sat them down at a table, he holding out her chair to sit and then sitting himself. Interaction Behaviors The man and woman were business casual, him with starched kakis and shirt, her with a casual dress and heels. They were not overdressed for the restaurant, but not casually dressed in shorts, tee shirts and sandals or tennis shoes. They sat opposite sides of the table in conversation when the waitress arrived to start the ordering process. The distance between them indicated more of a personal relationship than social indicating they were semi familiar with each other (DeVito, 2009). He nodded to the lady, indicating she should order her first and then gave his order to the waitress. He...

Child Observation Paper

...Intro I observed a child of 10 months. He is a male child and is not in preschool or any institution. I did not interact with the child I just watched them as they played and interacted with their mother. The observation was done on the 9th of March during spring break. I visited my cousins and their child in their home. The father works in his office throughout the week and the mother is a stay-at-home mom. But the father spends a large amount of his time with his child. The parents do try hard to communicate and interact with the child as often as possible. I believe this information is necessary to understand how much interaction the child has with his parents. Cognitive development Johnny would be in the sensorimotor stage. Johnny kept wanting to play with my cell phone. It looked as if he could only understand the object by feeling the object. Johnny is starting to show intention behaviors by doing things like reaching for my cell phone. He was intentionally demonstrating that he wants my cell phone. To ensure that his behavior was intentional I would take the phone away from him and he would begin to cry. After seeing his negative reaction, I then showed him the phone again and he reached for it a second time....

Child Observation Paper

...I chose to do my child observation at a local school, Lemme Elementary. It was on October 20th right after school ended at the after school program. The child I observed was named Scarlett, she is 5 years old and in Kindergarten. She has nothing atypical and is a great learner. She is very respectful, and loves to color. She is very shy and reserved, but when asked to do something she listens very well. Scarlett is very adventurous in her art and is eager to learn new things in the classroom. Scarlett chose to draw a picture of her mom, playing on the playground with her friends, and a watermelon. She said she always draws pictures of her mom, because she loves her. The playground was where she gets to have fun during school with her friends....

...For the participant observation project I chose to do Chapters book store, which was located at Orchard park mall. The dates I went were; first 26th of July around 1.00 pm, second day was on the 31st of July around 4.00 pm, and finally on the 3rd of August around 11.00 pm. Through critical thinking and deep observation this article’s focus will be; rituals, gender codes, and consumerism (Schultz et al. 2012). Chapters book store is about selling books: the concept of consumerism is deeply tied to selling books. People buy books they prefer and due to consumer demand more books are brought in and sold. Furthermore, this repeated process of buying and selling has become some sort of ritual. There is a repeated process of consumerism at play here, this book buying process is out of daily routine, then there seems to be a schema which is buying books, all of these fits very well with the definition of ritual (Schultz et al. 2012). The people working at chapters and its customers are performing this ritual on a daily basis. There were other rituals such the process of buying of books as well. The customer has to always head to the cashier, the...

Workplace Observation Paper

... The settings I studied were two grocery stores. The first store was a college campus grocery store/deli. This store was small and had few employees. The atmosphere of this store was casual and somewhat relaxed. The atmosphere was created by the employees’, their interactions with the customers, and the types of services being offered. The employees wore jeans and polo uniform shirts which is very casual and nothing like business attire or a full uniform like larger grocery store might make them wear. The interactions were the biggest part that created this casual atmosphere and the reality of this store (Lerum, 2001). The employees and customers had many similarities such as for the most part they were around the same age, they were students, and a part of the same university. For these reasons they had somewhat informal conversations and both parties were friendly in a way that seemed like they knew each other. Occasionally employees would stand and talk with each other or with customers instead of finding something to do to be busy. Sometimes an employee and a customer might know each other and engage in longer conversations. The services being offered was that customers could go to the deli and make their own sandwiches or choose one and have things changed to it. This required the employees to ask questions, interact, and often led to them joking and having conversations with customers. Customers felt free to ask questions and make requests and engage in the process of their...

Child Psychology Observation Paper

...influenced by others, and how they act on their own. I will begin by explaining the children I have observed and the area of development I decided to focus on. Instead of only choosing one child to observe, I was lucky enough to know someone that has three children of all the same age to observe. At the age of 14, my good friend Shelby Nastase became a proud sister of triplet brothers, two of the boys are identical, Jake and Andrew, and one is fraternal, Alec. The boys are now at the age of six, each with their own vibrant personalities. Although all boys look very much alike, especially the twins, each has their own mind and personality that would defiantly make them their own individual. During my observations, I quickly decided that my point of interest in writing this paper would be to focus on the social behaviors between all three of the children. I not only decided on observing how the siblings interact with each other, but I also decided it would be a good idea to see how they interacted with other children their own age. I also decided that when I observed the siblings when they were...

Observation Paper

...Have you ever met someone and felt instantly connected? What about an entire group of people? I have. I went into this assignment thinking no big deal, ill eat some tacos, write a paper and if anything I got some good food out of it. But I got more than that. I got a new found respect for a new culture and a group of friends that I never would have met otherwise. For my observation I went to Pablo’s Tacos in the town of Blue Island, IL. It is a small town rite over the boarder of Chicago. It is a small Mexican restaurant on Western Ave. It is family owned and unless you asked you might not even know they have a sit down area because it is hidden. My first trip there was supposed to be pure observation I didn’t want to interact much just observe and eat. My friend and I have been at a Cheerleading Competition all morning down the street at the high school. We sat down and began to order when one of the cheerleaders walked in with her family. I coached her the year before and she was very excited to see me outside a cheerleading setting. She ran up and yelled “Coach” The owner congratulated her on doing so well at the competition and gave her a cookie. She sat with us and talked and talked about how this season had gone. We ordered our food and when it came out it was double what I had expected. When we joked about it with the waitress (the owners wife) She told me “we take care of our own.” She thanked me for coaching her granddaughter and said that she really had...

...Observation Analysis Constance Clark 506 March 3, 2013 Kim Scoggins Observation Analysis The observation was in Ms. Small, Reading and English classroom. Ms. Small works with 7th graders in Reading and English. Ms. Small uses a theory known as constructivism. When she works with her class she is looking for the meaning behind everything that students say. She calls it “playing devil’s advocate” as students respond to one question, and she immediately leads to the opposite side of the argument. Ms. Small looks at the end result when teaching and says that the facts in isolation do not mean very much. Students have these mental perceptions about ideas and information being taught, but as a teacher Ms. Small brings those ideas into reality visually, verbally, and with direct hands on activities. She says that the quality of the information is more important than the quality. The students are asked not to memorize a story and complete a multiple choice (or multiple guess as she calls it) for her class, but to interpret it, act it out, or defend the characters in a mock trail. Educational theory that I would suggest that could have been used is constructivism. Constructivism is when people construct their own individual psychological models of the world in order to make sense of their experiences. Ms. Small could have enriched the lesson to real life situations to connect to the students in today’s society. A professor can use different educational theories in a classroom...

...Social Interaction among students fails because of cell phones Technology to communicate INTRO: Since the last decade, cell phone use has gained an incredible amount of popularity throughout society attracting audiences of all ages. Technology has significantly improved from what it used to be cell phones especially. The behavior I choose to be is the new way that students interact with schools. Walking to school every day I noticed that students don’t talk to each other anymore. Even when they are together on a table, walking or even during class, there is no more a face to face interaction. Technology has become the new face to interact with one another. The theory on this observation is the social behavior perspective. This theory explains how people interact with the environment. Even when they are in groups dung lunch most of them are on their cell phones. Student's face to face communication is fading by the frequency of texting, not merely in the sense that they speak is becoming abbreviated but the focus associated with talking is becoming distracted and scarce. BACKGROUND: “From a survey 800 American young people between ages 12 and17 regarding their use of mobile phones . The researchers report that half of the teens were sending 50 or more messages a day , with older teenage girls sending an average of 100 messages daily”. (Chin, Jen, Fan, 2013). Clearly, text messaging on mobile phones is an important element in the lives of many American teenagers...

A clear vision that is ethical helps to develop a healthy culture that is strong and cohesive.(Daft, 2011) In my observation of the culture of a high school staff, I find areas that are strongly aligned to the vision and areas that are in need of improvement. The mission statement of the school is to prepare students to learn and be successful in a supportive environment that encourages rigorous standards, celebrates cultural diversities, promotes teamwork, and molds students into leaders and contributing citizens in a technology rich and evolving society. From this mission statement a motto was formed “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow”. The school has a clear vision that each student is endowed with the fundamental competence and intelligence needed to commence achieving their individual goals in life. (Westlake High School, 2000) The schools values have worth, merit and importance and start as a solid base to develop the right culture to reach goal or vision of the school. The key values of our high school are that we believe that each student has value; learning should take place in a safe, structured environment that is aware of social, emotional, and physical wellness of each student. Pernet And Child Observation Ben Brown April 7, 2002 Report Child And Parent Behavior Observation I am almost always surrounded by the interactions between children and their parents. I hear it at my work, I hear it in restaurants, but most of all I hear it at my house. My mother owns a daycare and every night I listen parents being hit by a barrage of questions. When children are being picked up they always have a couple of questions for their parents. Children are always asking about the meal for the night or whether they can go over to a friend's house or have some body over. Every night I see 12 different children with twelve different parents and it seems that each parent acts differently then the next. When I thought of observing the children that attend my mothers daycare I decide that I should observe the interactions between the daycares "Problem Child" and his mother. The boy that I chose to observe seemed to have no respect for anyone or anything. He often made obvious lies and played practical jokes that physically hurt the other children. On the Friday night that I observed him and his mother...

...occupation, education, political standing, housing, and ownership of possessions. In addition to these factors are the superficial diverse aspects of personal hygiene, manners, morals, attitude, and materialist items such as dress, hair, vehicles, and jewelry. Some of the elements are obvious and can be seen while others are considered more private. The objective of this paper is to share an observation of a social class other than my own and in conclusion develop a personal action plan based on what I learn and how I will use my new found knowledge as it relates to diversity consciousness. Observation I consider myself middle-class based on my college degree, profession, income, and ownership of a home and vehicle. Because I consider myself middle-class, I chose to observe what I believe to be members of upper and lower class. I decided to take advantage of the back to school season and choose two locations where school children and their parents would buy clothing. I chose the stores based on reputation. I spent time at the upscale Macy’s in the Mall of America and at the secondhand store Goodwill. To make my observations not so obvious I browsed the clothing sections and even tried items on. Macy’s was definitely more out of my comfort zone because it is so expensive and fancy. I even felt uncomfortable in the restroom. Another factor that increased my discomfort knew I didn’t look as well as the other customers. I was among individuals with purses that cost more than my mortgage...
