Setting/Tone
Pages 1- 19 introduce the settings of the book it depicts a southern North Carolinian slaves lifestyle the 1800s (pg. 1) The atmosphere was dark and gloomy Harriet’s family was dying and being abused. (pg. 1- 2) Willie didn't like having a master or somebody owning him. (pg. 5) Willie was a free spirited young boy who didn’t like the fact he had two bosses, his father and his master. This free spirit is what I believe will convince Harriet to try to escape slavery.

Character
Mrs. Jacobs is the first slave owner in the book. She was Harriet fathers owner. (pg. 1) She let Harriet's father and mother live together if he paid his monthly dues to her. (pg. 1-2) Allowing spouses to live together was a very uncommon practice. This …show more content…

Personal Response/ Imagery
I completely agree in her decision to run away even though the where her most prized possessions. “I reasoned that they wanted to discourage me from trying to escape and wanted to break the children in. If I no longer was at the plantation, the Flints would have no reason to take Benny and Ellen away from Grandmother. I decided to run away that night.” This shows that Harriet love her kids and always wants the best for them even if it puts herself at risk.
