...Why having an open mind empowers you to grow These days, we are gradually exploring a whole new online world, and thus, we have a more diverse, wide-ranged social network. Meanwhile, we receive far more information from different people and medias than before on a daily basis, but what ideas and opinions to accept is entirely up to us individuals. That leads us to think: in what kind of circumstances does having an open mind empower you to grow? Generally, growth means getting better at something or having a better understanding of something. To be able to grow, one has to adapt the righteous values on viewing the world and society and refuse to isolate oneself, so that one would agree with the new constructive ideas emerged in life. First of all, having an open mind alone does not guarantee growth (at least not in a good way). When I was in middle school, there was this one experience I had that recently enlightened me to the very concept of “one will pick up things that are same as one’s value”. The year I turned 14, for some strange reason, I became extremely rebellious, and I refused to do what my parents and teachers told me to. I hung out with a group of bad kids in my school and did many dumb, horrible things. At that time, I was up to trying whatever seemed exciting and edgy. I just wanted to stand out and do something different in order to get recognized by those senior kids. One time, after watching a movie in a theater with my friend Sun, we lit the paper towel...

...Ghiradella Eng. 010-11 December, 3rd 2015 One thing everyone should have is an open mind. An open mind helps one to grow in many ways. Three of these ways are in character growth, wisdom, and skill. Having an open mind doesn’t mean believing what anyone says, but it means being humble and accepting as much knowledge that one can in. Being humble can make one view the world differently. One thing that comes along with having an open mind is that one’s character grows, and adapts well to other people. With an open mind, one can read people's vibes very well. One might not know what the other individual may be thinking exactly, but one knows what the individual's intentions are because of their actions. if one has an open mind, then one is more aware of people and the situation around them. For example, if one is leaving or approaching their car, one of the questions one might ask their self would be; are there any suspicious looking characters following me or approaching me? And if it is then one is aware of it before it actually happens because one is taking precaution by surveying the area. These ties into character growth because adapting well to people can help one handle people better than others which is part of one's character. Along with character growth having an open mind also gives you wisdom. Wisdom is one of the most important parts that come from an open mind. One gains a substantial amount of wisdom by not being closed minded. being wise allows...

...KNOWLEDGE in BLOOM: Listening with an Open Mind Each chapter-end assessment is based on Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning. See the inside front cover for a quick review. UTILIZES LEVELS 4 AND 5 ON THE TAXONOMY EXPLANATION: Seldom (if ever) would you pop in a CD, click a song on your iPod, or tune your radio to a station that you strongly disliked. It just does not seem like a good use of time, and it is not something that you would probably enjoy doing on a daily basis. However, for this exercise, we are going to ask that you do precisely what we’ve described above and then apply what you’ve experienced and learned to several questions and four ESSENTIAL CORNERSTONES from Chapter 1. PROCESS: Over the course of the next few days, find a song from your least favorite genre. If you are a huge fan of R&B, move away from that genre and choose something from a genre of which you are not particularly fond. You might choose an old country song or a song from rap or bluegrass. If you enjoy listening to “Easy Love Songs,” try something different such as metal or swing. The only stipulation is that the song must have lyrics. You will have to listen to the song several times to answer the questions. HOWEVER, it is important that you read the questions BEFORE you listen to the song—particularly question #2. The key to this exercise is to practice listening with an open mind, listening for content, and listening to words when barriers are in the way (the barrier in this case would be...

...The “monsters” of today are not dragons, trolls, and other assorted beasts, but instead something more subtle. I find that the opinion I’m about to share is similar to that of the theory in which Beowulf actually existed, but the monsters were exaggerated warriors and personifications of natural things. The “monsters” of today are also manmade. I find that these “monsters” are acts and beliefs of mankind itself. For the sake of connecting this back to Beowulf even more, I will list three “monsters”, because there were three monsters in this epic. Perhaps the first monster is war. I find it funny in a sense that during the time of Beowulf, many cultures seemed to praise bloodshed because it was an attempt to prove one’s strength and place in society. Today, most people around the world abhor that idea. Mankind has gone through several wars for many different reasons. In the last three centuries alone, we’ve had wars over land, over people, over independence, over religion, and even wars over how a country should distribute its currency (communism versus capitalism). There have been many anti-war groups over the decades, so, if we assume war is a monster, a group like the America First Committee would theoretically be an opponent to the monster , albeit an unsuccessful one. Much like a monster, countless people die in its presence. Unfortunately, just like the forces of evil in Beowulf, wars will probably exist forever, because someone always finds a new reason to wage war over...

...finding out what was wrong with a car a good example of this. Adam’s emotional blocks: 1. Fear of Risk Taking- an example of this is not raising your hand to answer a question in class because you are afraid to not answer it correctly. 2. Lack of Appetite for Chaos- planning an event is a good example of this. You must be prepared for the chaos and just understand that at the end everything will come together. 3. Judging Rather Than Generating Ideas- wanting your idea to be the only one used and not being open minded. 4. Lack of Challenge- not wanting to do a math problem that you already know how to do. 5. Inability to Incubate- when you leave a lot of things to the last minute. Higgin’s hindrances: 1. Defining the problem to narrowly- not looking at the bigger picture. 2. Attacking the symptoms, rather than the real problem- not understanding what the real problem is. 3. Assuming there is only one right answer- not keeping an open mind. 4. Getting “hooked” on the first solution- not realizing that there can be more than one answer. 5. Getting “hooked” on a solution that almost works- settling for less than 100%. 6. Being distracted by irrelevant information- not weeding out facts that you don’t need. 7. Getting frustrated by a lack of success- getting upset if you don’t get the answer on the first few tries. 8. Being anxious to finish- wanting to hurry up and just get it over with. 9. Defining the...

...provide three key components into a successful business as well as work environment and show that when working together you can take something small and turn it into something magnificent. When management listens to the employees, who work closely with the community, there is so much potential. Personal Experience with Effective Communication I have my own personal experience because I helped to open two sports bars. It was very hard work, however communication was the most important in the whole process. Starting with the “would be” customers. We sent out a street team of promoters that not only made everyone aware of the opening, but got the opinions of the people who would soon frequent the establishment. Employees were next. We made sure that they were experienced enough to provide prompt service and even create drinks for holidays and other special events. Then last, was management. There really wasn’t much experience from them in the bar industry. Therefore he needed to be open to listening to his employees and the community and trust that in keeping an open mind or...

...to be in a position where I could contribute to or even create that same environment for other students. When I saw the opportunity posted to become a Resident Assistant at GSU, I was eager to apply. I feel that my personal experiences and challenges I have faced during my years of college and the way I have recovered from those experiences, shows adversity, goal-orientation, and determination. I am willing to shed light on those experiences and help other incoming students who may struggle with getting acclimated with college, become more comfortable with GSU and teach them what the campus has to offer. When I become an RA, my goal is to be the person that I needed when I first started college, a person who is honest, reliable, relatable, open-minded, personable, and understanding. From work to school, I have been in environments where there was a large amount of diversity. As a result, I tend to not...

Here, I’m talking about a constant, inner excitement about life where you know your place in the world and that you’re doing things to make it happen, even if slowly. Even if you have a “naturally jaded” personality, even if you are 40, 50, 60, or even 70, when you have a purpose and you are living true to it, life is filled with meaning and happiness each day. Which brings us...

Not as long as I am at the head of this family” Qoute 2: “Honey . . . life don't have to be like this. I mean sometime people can do things so that things are bet” What I put in my thinking head is FAMILY. You should never give up on your family even if your falling off and don’t have nothing no money you will always have your family there to support each other no matter what the struggle is. You should always fight and never give up because you never know a miracle might happen and your life could change in a snap of a finger. ...our subconscious no longer stores away anything since we are way too open with ourselves. Thomas insisted that we should once again store away certain memories in our subconscious in order to open up a space for what is important. “The house,” writes Lewis Thomas in The Attic of the Brain, “is a machine for living, and what kind of a machine would hide away its worn-out, obsolescent parts?” Here, author draws an analogy between a house and a machine to show that the people of present lead a highly mechanized life where anything which does not have a real-life value are considered redundant and are thrown away. The author, then, goes on to suggest a paradigm shift in the way we perceive memory; instead of remembering every minute details – according to Thomas – of our everyday life, we should consciously try to forget a reasonable proportion of our thoughts, and in this way we can regain that “sudden spontaneous felling of discrete, unparalleled ideas and memories popping out of nowhere into our mind”. In the process of recalling a memory, certain portions of it – influenced by age, personal growth and circumstances of life -- might get unconsciously contaminated but the very struggle of recalling a memory and eventually forming a vague frame of it gives an individual an absolute satisfaction. The author over the course of the essay seemed to stress the point that if we don’t learn not to be open—that is, hold onto some precious memories only for ourselves to nurture--...

...Vernelle Bodrick May 12, 2011 The Importance of Education in Today’s World “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”. How you ever seen education as being important in today’s society? In my eyes, I see education as being very important in today’s society because education open your vision on how many people see life. Education is not just for young people, it is for people that are willing to learn and be taught. I am a 45 year old mother that has three daughters. I never had the opportunity to finish my college education because I had to be a mother first. I always told myself that when I was able and focus again that I will go back to school to purse my education further. Education means many things to me such as self-growth, family growth, and financial growth. However, when attending school at 45 year of age, I’m growing as a person. I see that I’m much more open to new and different things and that I am making much better grades now, than when I was in college the first time. When attending an online school I have to be dedicated and focus. Education to me is not just self-growth but also family growth. When I see my daughters attending school and doing something positive with their lives not only make me proud of them, but also gives me the drive and ambitious that I need to make it through. My daughters are what keep me on the right track. When I feel like giving up, I turn and look at them and see the same things that I am going through is what they have to face every...

...I believe in keeping an open mind, open to new concepts, ideas, and thought as you never know where your learning will take you along this path called life. Just a few years ago, I was sitting at my desk, staring aimlessly at my computer screen quietly working on my mundane administrative work, when my supervisor, for whom I had worked for over 11 years, nicely requested that I follow her. Inquisitive, I slowly entered her executive office mentally wondering what this was all about. With utmost confidence, my boss began to tell me that she had decided to put me in charge of developing a SharePoint site for the unit. My questioning eyes just stared back at her as my mind filled with questions, “what in the world is SharePoint; how in the world...

...and what does each letter stand for? My personality according to the Jungian 16 type personality is ESTP. E is for extraversion. That means that I like to direct my thoughts and feelings outwards. S stands for sensing. I like to touch things to learn and I look at fine details rather than the big picture. T stands thinking; that means I look at the facts of a problem instead of my feelings. P stands for perception. This means that I keep an open mind about situations and try to perceive all of the options so, that I may be able to change my mind at a later time. List at least four to six key characteristics of your personality type that you recognize in your own behavior and style. Support the list with the help of specific examples. Four of my own personality characteristics that I recognize in my own behavior and style would be 1. Sometimes saying what I think, when I think it. 2. When starting something new I want the detail steps rather than the big picture. 3. I like facts and not emotions in decision making 4. I keep an open mind incase the situation changes. One of the best and worst things about my personality is that I will tell others what I am thinking. Sometimes it doesn’t even matter if the thought that pops into my head has nothing to do with anything that we were talking about. Like if my mom and I are talking about soccer, I could say something about the amount of money that Texas is spending on the death penalty. Secondly, I really don’t want to think about...

...Sound Tracks to My Life I wonder if there is such a thing as a good addiction, because I’m sure as hell addicted to music. When I think of music I think of an escape. I can be doing anything at any given moment and put in a pair of head phones and be completely in another world. Without music, my day is completely empty and boring. I wake up to music; I go to school listening to music and even eat to it. Music is a source of joy, stress, tears, camaraderie and fulfillment for me. What would life be without music? The world would be a very quiet place. Music for me is a reminder of how things once were an indication of how things are, and a view of where society is headed. Music is a direct reflection of the picture of society. Music can be a way to deliver messages, a poetic medium, a fine art, or nothing more than a source of entertainment. No matter what it is used for, music is the perfect art and my life would be that much less complete without it. Two songs come to mind when I think about all these sources of completeness for myself. First is “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood and “You and Me” by Soldier of Jah Army. I often think of the words of Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” in which he states:”And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free....” I wholeheartedly agree. My heart swells with gratitude to God and this wonderful land where, regardless of whom I am or what my goals are, I have that priceless gift of freedom. Freedom to...
