Bullying

...Work-place bullying Bill Langley Strayer University Work-place bullying is primarily conceptualized in the literature from an individual or interpersonal perspective with a focus on the victim. The impact of the broader organizational context on bullying has also been considered to a lesser extent. Only a small amount of research exists, however, regarding the group-level processes that impact on the incidence and maintenance of bullying behavior. We adopt a group level perspective to theoretically discuss and explain the processes involved in the occurrence and maintenance of work-place bullying behaviors. Using Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1986) and Social Rules Theory (Argyle, Henderson, & Furnham, 1985), two conceptual frameworks are presented that consider work-place bullying at the intra-group and inter-group levels. Several propositions are put forward regarding the likelihood of bullying in work groups. Suggested directions for empirical research are addressed and practical implications are also discussed. Compared with a more individual focus, effective formal work groups have the potential to offer a range of benefits to organizations, including positive impacts on attitudinal, Behavioral, operational, and financial outputs (Delarue, Van Hootegem, Proctor, & Burridge, 2008). Informal groups (i.e., alliances not represented in the formal structure) is also an important part of the organizational landscape (Hutchinson,...

School Violence

...today, our kids are suffering from school violence. School violence in itself is such a broad area to be researched. The area I would like to propose in this paper is that of school-bullying. In all the areas of school-violence, bullying seems to be the most prevalent. Although school-bullying may not be the most dangerous form of school-violence, it is still a problem, and I aim to seek what causes this phenomenon. Introduced, within the body of my paper, is a series of research studies and techniques, in which I have proposed to use in order to arrive at a series of logical answers. I start out first with a good perspective, one that many people would ponder when thinking of this epidemic. I then move onto reliable research questions that would satisfy any researcher if he or she were to take this project head-on, as well as anyone interested in the phenomenon of bullying. Necessary sampling is arrived at later in the project to further get data for the study. In the final stages, I then analyze all pieces of data I have collected to be able to come to a satisfactory, conclusive derivative. Table of Contents * Stage One: Perspectives * Stage Two: Research Questions * Stage Three: Sampling Data * Stage Four: Data Analyzation * Closing Remarks * References Perspectives Bullying has been around since the creation of this world, and has evolved into so many shapes and forms throughout the course of time; but what causes this phenomenon...

Cyber bullying, is the social-networking phenomenon that is gaining traction among America’s tech-savvy teens, is drawing more attention than ever from school districts and state legislatures anxious to curb the online taunts and insults. Impact of Internet on Today's Youth

...unbelievable rate. So fast parents are not always able to keep up with it. The Internet is a great resource to people of all ages, but with that it brings some negative. The Internet can have a huge impact on the youth of today. How it impacts this very vulnerable group of people will be explored in this paper. What Is The Internet? Before we can establish how, we must first explore what. Before the invention of the Internet, nothing had the same capabilities. Inventions such as the telegraph, the telephone, the radio and the computer, helped to prepare the world for what was to come. None of these can even begin to reach the number of people and amount of information as the Internet. The Internet Society says that the Internet allows people to communicate with no consideration to their physical location. The Internet allows us to transmit information and communicate with others throughout the world. (Leiner et al., n.d.). The first host computer was connected in September 1969. Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) installed the first Interface Message Processor (IMP) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). One month later, October 1969, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) connected. The first host-to-host message was sent between these two locations and the ARPANET was officially in use. It wasn’t until three years later in October 1972, the ARPANET was first demonstrated in a public setting. October 24, 1995, the Federal Networking Council (FNC) officially...

Media Violence

...-RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINE: Introduction: The 12 year old brother had triggered and shot the 8 year old younger brother while playing with their father’s gun. Up on asking the 12 year old, he mentioned they were acting out what they had seen on television a night before. A person tends to adapt what one sees and the media engraves images into ones’ mind, so they think it is the norm although, it is an absurd idea. Kids are generally influenced by the media. The American Academy of Pediatrics, Testimony before the U.S. Commerce Committee: “Before age 8, children cannot discriminate between real life and fantasy. Onscreen violence is as real to them as violence that they witness at home or in their community. From childhood’s magical thinking and impulsive behavior, adolescents must develop abstract thought and social controls to prepare them to deal with adult realities. If this development process occurs in a violent environment, it can become distorted. Media, with which children spend more time than their parents or teachers, have great potential for shaping the hearts, minds and behaviors of America’s young people- and we need to take this potential very seriously. THESIS Media violence has increased the number of violent activities and tends to engrave violent images into one’s mind which leaves behind a blur vision of reality and fictional thoughts that are mainly created by video games, sex violence, television violence and the web that includes the internet...

Bullying

...navigation, search Bullying is detrimental to students’ well-being and development.[1] Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability.[2][3] The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "target". Bullying consists of three basic types of abuse – emotional, verbal, and physical. It typically involves subtle methods of coercion such as intimidation. Bullying can be defined in many different ways. The UK currently has no legal definition of bullying,[4] while some U.S. states have laws against it.[5] Bullying ranges from simple one-on-one bullying to more complex bullying in which the bully may have one or more 'lieutenants' who may seem to be willing to assist the primary bully in his or her bullying activities. Bullying in school and the workplace is also referred to as peer abuse.[6] Robert W. Fuller has analyzed bullying in the context of rankism. Bullying can occur in any context in which human beings interact with each other. This includes school, church, family, the workplace, home, and neighborhoods. It is even a common push factor in migration. Bullying can exist between social...

Bullying

...BULLYING BOYS: AN EXAMINATION OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN THE PLAYGROUND Dr L Trickett1 ABSTRACT Violence between young men, particularly resulting from the emergence of a so called ‘gun and knife culture’, is currently subject to extensive media coverage in UK2. Alongside this there has been increased anxiety about both the scale and impact of bullying in schools (Cawson et al, 2002; Tyler, 2002). These issues form part of a more generalised concern about men and boys in Britain often referred to as a ‘crisis of masculinity’ (see Clare, 2000). This article examines findings from research with male respondents about their relationship with hegemonic masculinity (Connell, 1987, 1989, 1995, 2005) and bullying whilst at school and makes suggestions as to what can be done to tackle abusive behaviour amongst boys and young men. 1 Dr Loretta Tricket is a Senior Lecturer and researcher with the Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University, UK. 2 See Lockhart, G; McClory, J and Qvortrup, M. (2007) Gun and Knife Crime in Great Britain, Policy Exchange, Research Note. Knife crime is a fact of life for teenagers (Bryony Gardon, telegraph.co.uk, 31 May 2008). 2 Introduction This article is in five parts. Part One outlines the theoretical background to the research. Part Two describes the methodology and the participants. Part Three discusses different types of bullying and the factors that were associated with them. Part Four discusses resistance...
