Analyzing Poem At first the only aspect that really stood out to me in the poem, I Shall Paint My Nails Red, was the acts of a woman talking about feminine things that woman like to do to change up their appearance. After thoroughly analyzing this poem I came to the realization that it was much deeper than that. Every line of this poem is a distinct statement filled with self-expression and confidence. I Shall Paint My Nails Red by Carole Satyamurti, takes the simple act of painting your nails and shows the meaning behind it. This poem hits home to me because painting my nails is something I enjoy doing with my grandmother. My grandmother has never gone a day without having her nails painted, and after reading this poem I understand why. To me, womanism is the main theme that Satyamurti is trying to portray in this poem and it is being shown through beauty, strength, and passion.

Beauty can represent a numerous amount of things, and in this poem Satyamurti does a remarkable job at capturing the true meaning of beauty. “Because I am proud of my hands” (Satyamurti 2), after I broke this poem down piece by piece, the imagery in this line caught my eye. I relate the pride she takes in her hands after painting them to my grandmother and how I never see her go a day without having her nails painted. Although painting your nails is a simple thing, it makes you feel good about yourself. My grandmother walks with confidence every day and though it may not be just because of her nails, I am certain that it does play some sort of factor in her demeanor. Another line that resembles beauty is “Because it is quicker than dying my hair” (Satyamurti 8). At first you get the impression that this woman may be so lazy she does not want to take the time out of her day to dye her hair. While this may be true, when you really analyze and spend time on just this line, you get a deeper meaning. What I took from this line was the fact that she wanted to do something to her body to make herself feel pretty, even if that meant painting her nails rather than something so drastic as to dying her hair. She wanted something that was simple and easy, yet stood out. She wanted to make a statement but at the same time not change who she is. When Satyamurti says “Because a bit of color is a public service” the woman realizes that people actually look at her when she does something extra to herself. This line makes me think of a woman walking around in public, flashing her newly painted nails, with a smile on her face. She seems to believe that anywhere she were to go with these red nails, the world would see them and appreciate them. With this idea, I feel that Satymurti is trying to portray the fact that women are constantly thinking of other’s needs. As mothers, wives, lovers, women are always taking on the role of pleasing others.

With beauty in mind, strength goes hand and hand, for example in line four Satyamurti writes, “Because I will look like a survivor.” This line to me indicates that this woman has suffered something horrific, for example, cancer. When someone has cancer it usually takes something away from them, whether it is physical or mental. I believe that whatever the woman has suffered through, it has stolen something that took away her identity as woman. When Satyamurti says “Because it will remind me that I am a woman” I instantly think that she is painting her nails so that she can feel feminine. Whatever she was a survivor of took something precious from her, for example her hair or a breast, and she substitutes painting her nails for that loss.It reminds her every time she looks at her nails that she has something to be thankful for, her life, and that makes her stronger day in and day out. “Because my lover will be surprised” (Satyamurti 7) when I read this line I automatically think that this woman is independent. I think this because a lover is not a husband, therefore she does not depend on him in any way. Another line that supports that the woman is independent is in the sixth line when Satyamurti says “Because my daughter will say ugh”. I interpret that her daughter does not like when she paints her nails, because she associates that with going out and seeing her lover. To me the daughter seems jealous of the lover because whoever that may be gets to spend more time with her than she gets to. While strength and beauty are similar, passion takes on a whole different role in womanism. When I think of a beautiful, strong, independent woman painting her nails, the color red comes to mind. The moment I read the title of this poem I asked myself out of all colors, why red? Then when I contemplated about it, it came to me that red symbolizes all sorts of things like passion, integrity, elegance, wealth, and most of all, beauty. Therefore she paints here nails red because she wants all of those characteristics to represent her. In line five when Satyamurti says “Because I can admire them in traffic jams” goes back to how she wants all of these characteristics to come to reality. When she paints her nails red she feels like they do, and every time that she admires them, it reminds her again of the beautiful confident woman that she is.

All things considered the simple act of painting your nails can do wonders for a person and their self-steam. I never in a million years would think that by painting my nails I would represent beauty, strength, and passion. I used to think people just painted their nails because they wanted a dash of color to match whatever they were wearing that day, but after reading this poem that is not the case anymore. Every time I see someone with painted nails I wonder what they have gone through in life. To me painted nails are not just an accessory anymore. It tells a story. The nails behind that color tells a deep, passionate story of hardship that people have gone through in their lives.

I Shall Paint My Fingernails Red

...Carole Satymurti’s “I Shall Paint my Nails Red” is a wonderful poem which I found myself closely relating to. I feel that in this poem she reflects many sides of a woman’s life. It may be understood to have two separate messages, the direct and the hidden message. Satymurti does this through showing both the complexity of a woman’s life, and the simplicity that also exists within. At first glance, “I Shall Paint My Nails Red” gives a more obvious and direct amusing message in which she states different reasons why she would paint her nails red. Each line puts the reader in a different situation which may even be applied to our own daily lives. Satymurti does this by using every day examples and using them to suggest often absurd reasons for her to paint her nails red, adding a bit of comedy throughout the poem. Underlying each idea, however, Satymurti implies a deeper message about women and the many roles that they play in society, and the way that they view themselves. The first idea Satymurti suggests in the poem is, “Because a bit of colour is public service”. Here, she is implying that in painting her nails red she is in fact doing others a favor. This line makes me think of a woman loading her groceries onto the cash register before paying, showing off her bright red nails and provoking a smile on the cashiers face. She seems to believe that anywhere she were to go with these red nails, the world would see them and appreciate them. Underlying this main idea however...

Each part would be assigned a specific part number and the table would include the supplier number for the part. By organizing information like this it is much easier for a company to be able to order more parts from a supplier because the supplier is connected to the part verses having to look through an entire category to order one type of screw. For example let say Jake work for a company that makes bird houses. Jake orders his supplies from three different places. He get hi wood from Lowes and from them he purchase 3 different types of wood. Jake purchase Pine, Oak, and redwood. He purchases his screws, nails, and glue from Home Depot and from there he buy wood glue, 3 different size nails and 3...

Red Nails

...I Shall Paint My Nails Red is a short 10 lined prose piece written by Carole Satyamurti. I liked this poem because it is simplistic but can easily be analyzed with a deeper message. I noticed that a few of the line draw attention to a women’s normal role in society and the household. Because a bit of color is a public service Because my lover will be surprised Initially I was not sure if the author wrote this as a way to almost empower women or to simply say that they can wear whatever eccentric bright colors they want. Individuals, in society, are easily bounded by gender roles and expectation including suggested attire and overall appearance. So maybe, this red nail polish is symbolic for a rebellious act against the expectation for women during this author’s time period. Then I asked why the author choose red instead of bright blue, purple, or even black. But the color red may be associated with any type of stimulation, excitement, energy, beauty, lust, and many more. With the latter knowledge I support the claim that red is used as an act against the women’s role in different domains of life. In the last line the author writes “Because it is reversible.” I thought it was strategic to put this line at the end because it was short but this line concludes the the poem and sends a separate message on its own. Individual, women or men, are frequently judged my actions or impulsive behaviors that are temporary. This made me think of my parents response when I got my nosed pierced...

Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation

...Analysis December 14th, 2012 Abstract This is a short paper on one of my few dealings with Neighborhood Preservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The issue they had with me was the fact that our house had chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim. The rest of the paper includes what I did to resolve the issue they had with me. Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation This all started when one day coming home from our capstone class there was a piece of paper taped to the front door. The piece of paper was from the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation/Code Enforcement Division. It stated they were conducting inspections in our area and that our property was found to be in violation. The violations were for chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim of the house. If the violations were not corrected within thirty days then there is the possibility of being fined up to $2,500.00. Upon receiving this, I began to develop a step by step procedure to help resolve the issue, since most of my time was already being spent on work for our capstone class. The first step was to call and talk to the Code Enforcement Inspector. This step took almost a week to complete because we ended up playing phone tag with each other. Once we were finally able to catch each other, I was able to ask a few questions concerning the violations, time frame for completion, and to notify them of my school situation on the chance that we could work something out. It just...

What "Makes Up" Makeup

...What “Makes Up” Makeup: A Short History of Cosmetics At the start of every morning, my mother wakes up an hour earlier than necessary to “put on her face.” As a kid, I never understood what she was doing and was constantly annoyed that it would take her extremely long to get ready to go somewhere that was barely down the street. Why was she putting makeup on to go grocery shopping? To my grandma’s house? “Because I like to, Shyla,” was the only answer I ever got. But being that young, makeup was something you only wore on special days: on Halloween, to disguise yourself as someone else or a wedding, to be pretty. My mom wearing it daily confused me. As a woman, contradictions are shot at you like bullets. “Be natural, but don’t you dare have any blemishes, pimples, scars or hair anywhere that isn’t your head.” “A girl wearing absolutely no makeup, bare faced and natural isn’t enough, but a girl wearing heavy eyeshadow and face makeup is slutty.” Everything we do is somehow scrutinized through the eyes of what a man would or wouldn’t like. We have an endless list of standards we must live up to, all the while making sure to be ourselves, because guys don’t like fake girls. Some view makeup as a weapon of destruction, like it’s lying to the world, making people appear to be flawless models with it, but completely different person without it. All those years of watching my mom layer on product after product, wondering what the point of all of it was, I realized makeup...

Blue Shed

...My Blue Shed Over this past summer I decided that I was going to build a shed in my backyard. I had convinced myself that this was a necessity because my garage was in serious need of some storage relief. I had seen several at Home Depot and presumed that the apparently uncomplicated rectangular design would be no problem to build. I also assumed that those sheds must be extremely overpriced and that I would be saving a lot of money by doing it myself. I soon found out that a quality shed costs quite a bit of quality money. Most importantly, the expertise to actually construct this simple rectangular box is where the real cost is at. First thing I had to do was figure out how big of a shed that I was going to need. I inquired amongst friends and family how big of a shed I should make, as well as looking at the different models at various stores. I visited Home Depot several times to help me visualize exactly what I would need. After much deliberation I decided that an 8’ x 12’ shed would be just fine. I decided that a couple of lofts on either side of the interior would also give me the additional space that I would eventually want. I wanted a bigger shed but as it turns out the materials for a project like this are far from free. The next thing I had to do was convince my wife that it would be a good idea to have this shed. I was very excited to get started, but my wife was not. I spent the next couple of days convincing her that this was something that would be beneficial...

Essay On Billy Pilgrim's Slaughterhouse-Five

...Why are there short pieces of ‘scenes’ or urgent messages? Were they a part of the story, or were they bits of secrets? The Englishmen were completely adored by the Germans since their arrival. On page 94 it says, “They made war look stylish and reasonable, and fun. So the Germans let them have four sheds, though one shed would have held them all.” My question is, why do they look up to the Englishmen so much? Is it because they trade things with them? For example, the Englishmen traded coffee, chocolate or tobacco for paint, lumber, nails, and cloth. One night, they had an evening of entertainment, the musical called Cinderella. On page 98 it says, “Billy found the couplet so comical that he not only laughed-he shrieked. He went on shrieking until he was carried out of the shed and into another, where the hospital was.” Why was Billy set in the hospital if he wasn’t sick, but just laughing at the entertainment? It also says that he was tied down, and given a shot of morphine. This seems a little...
