...big day and it is up to one person or sometimes a team of people, these people are called managers. All managers must have various traits to be successful, but the most important three are; leadership skills, problem solving skills, and honesty. It was hard for me to pick which three skills where the most important, because they are all so important. I decided to do a survey and asked five people that I knew where managers and five people who where sales associates what they thought where the three most important traits of a manager (see figure 1.1.). Seven out of the ten said leadership skills, and I also agree with leadership being one of the most important. Organization came next with four votes, and honesty came after with three votes each. Problem solving skills came next with two votes then there where a lot of traits with one vote each like; responsibility, prioritizing, understanding, fairness, flexibility, time management, and loyalty. This survey didn't help sway my opinion in which three traits are most important and I actually was surprised in one of my findings. What does leadership mean to you? What comes to my mind is hard work, responsibility, experience, knowledge, compassion, and taking charge. Not everyone has these traits to be a leader. A successful Manager needs to have good leadership skills. If a staff can't look up to the...

...of listening comprehension as it relates to young children ages two to five. DEFINITION Before we begin, let’s take a minute to discuss the term listening comprehension. This skill can be observed when you read to the children. Listening comprehension can be defined as “the ability to recall and understand information which is presented orally.” This information might be presented through a book, filmstrip, video, or felt board set. EXAMPLES Mr. Fields, the preschool teacher, is reading the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the children. After he finishes reading, Mr. Fields asks the children, “How many bears lived in the house?” Rosie shrugs her shoulders and looks confused, but Jeremy exclaims, “Three!” Mr. Fields says, “That’s right, Jeremy. There were three bears in the story. Let’s count them together.” Mr. Fields turns the pages of the book until he comes to an illustration that contains the three bears. The children and Mr. Fields count the bears together. Mr. Fields then asks, “How did the bears know that someone had been eating their porridge?” Albert responds, “Because Baby Bear’s bowl was empty.” Jeremy says, “Because someone told them.” Mr. Fields then uses the book to help the children discover the correct answer. In the above example, Rosie clearly needs more practice with listening skills. Jeremy was able to quickly answer a question concerning the facts of the story, but he had more difficulty with a question requiring problem solving. Albert, however, was able...

...overcome the many obstacles and dilemma that must be faced in the 21st Century workforce. Daft (2012) states that, “Although some management theorists propose a long list of skills, the necessary skills for managing a department or an organization can be summarized in three categories: conceptual, human, and technical”. Although the degree of which the above mentioned skills will be used varies dependent on the level of management within an organization, it is still very important that a manager possesses these skills to perform to the best of their ability. To assess where we are with the three mentioned management skills, we were asked to complete a Management Aptitude Questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 18 situational style questions of which we were to answer them as best and as honestly as we could. The purpose of completing this survey was to give us an individualized report that would tell us what areas we were strong or weak in as it related to the three management skills: conceptual, human, and technical with the plan to identify areas of opportunity for us as managers. Results After taking the survey, it was surprising to see the end results. In the following three management skills, I scored the following: Conceptual skills: 28; Human Skills: 26; and Technical Skills: 14. This totally showed and displayed the traits associated with a Top Manager as I usually was in many of my previous roles. Daft...

...Using ‘Person Centred’ Communication Skills and Models to Help Clients Admitted for the First Time to a Mental Health Hospital Introduction Communication is one way of exchanging information and feelings from one person to another (Bach and Grant 2009). It is transmitted through verbal and non-verbal behaviour. Communication is an essential and fundamental aspect of nursing care (Timmins 2011). It is a major and important part of daily nursing practice in the nurse-client relationship (Sheldon et al. 2006). Communication in nursing is unique and it is different from communication between healthcare providers because nurses are at the start of the healthcare service as they spend more time with the client than other healthcare professionals (McCabe and Timmins 2006). Therefore, nurses have to pay more attention to improving their communication skills for better client care. In order to establish a positive relationship with the client, it is necessary to communicate effectively and subsequently improve the quality of nursing care (McCabe and Timmins 2006). Effective communication is key to a therapeutic relationship with the client. It is defined as a ''purposeful form of communication used in the helping relationship'' (Ruesch 1961 cited in Arnold and Boggs 2007, p18). It is developed by the nurse for the purpose of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating client care (Arnold and Boggs 2007). The establishment of a nurse-client relationship was a key element...
