Palmer Hayden was a African American painter as he was most know during the Harlem Renaissance. He used oils and watercolors in his pantings while focusing on mainly African American lifestyle and experience. The main reason he came up with " The Janitor Who Paints" was from the inspiration of his friend, Cloyde. Cloyde also loved painting and was also a Janitor. “I painted it because no one called Cloyde a painter; they called him a janitor.” Palmer said.
