...Through the Smoke Screen of Halloween On October 31 every year, the majority of the country and several other countries celebrate the diabolized holiday of Samhain, otherwise more widely known as Halloween. Despite all the negative stigmas attached to this holiday, it is actually a very sacred and the holiest day to those that follow the Old Ways. Having known many pagans and being married to one, I have had the unique opportunity to gain a new insight into this holiday. It was and still is considered a celebration and reverent time to remember and honor the souls of family and friends who have died and departed this world. Before and especially during the Middle Ages, the new religion of Christianity was struggling to take hold on the people living throughout Ireland, Norway, the U.K. ranging to France and Germany. It was hard for the Church to convert those people and make them discard their gods, festivals and rituals. The Church resorted to assimilating the peoples' customs, ritual and beliefs into the Church's beliefs and then demonizing anything that didn't fit or they wanted to do away with. Samhain was one of those festivals that the Church would have done away with for the people revered this holiday a great deal. ...This year, Mercedes Benz is offering a new four-door sedan known as the CLA. They released commercials targeted for Super Bowl audiences that really caught my attention. Neither commercial is about the car's performance, ride comfort, or its gas mileage. Initially, I could not understand my attraction to the first commercial but then it hit me… nostalgia. It was hard to put my finger on because that nostalgia lay wrapped in a superficial layer of modernity. I found it entertaining and found that it conveyed a message to me. ...THE PROBLEM The problem this paper tries to solve rises from the title of the novel throughout its whole text. In his dissertation “The Metaphor of Devil and Cross in Ngugi-Wa-Thiong’o’s Devil on the Cross” under the researcher’s supervision, Nvunabandi Byamana (2010) tried to show that more than what everybody would be led to put at first sight of this title, that ‘Devil’ and ‘Cross’ are mere symbols, they can be constructed into metaphors after a careful reading of the novel. The findings show that the following metaphors would be correct if based on the novel’s analysis: Colonialism was a devil. Capitalism is a devil. Imperialism is a devil. Neocolonialism is a devil. Independence was a cross. Communism is a cross. Unity is a cross. But the title of Ngugi’s novel ‘Devil on the Cross’ draws attention to itself and raises some queries whether the devil he is talking about : is on the cross; was on the cross; has been put on the cross; or should be put on the cross. The opening of the book, however, unfolds this initial ambiguity by specifying that the devil should be put on the cross by the oppressed class: thus my interest in the topic because the title appears as an invitation to crucify the devil and this justifies the title of the paper, Devil on the Cross: Ngugi’s Marxist Invitation.
